‘SBWmo Maouinks.—As wo predicted, when the
Fair opened, a largo number of persons visiting the
■city to attend this wonderful combination of art, In
dustry, and patriotism, are bent upon carrying with
them to their respective homos a Sowing Maohtno.
»Of course, the Wheeler & Wilson comes in for the
largest share of patronage. Over Jive thousand of
those celebrated Machines are now in u o in this
city alone. The great peculiarity or the Wheeler A
"Wilson Machine is, that no one is over disappointed
Sn the way, in which it operates. It sews, hems,
tucks, gathers, binds, fells, and porfnrtns ail the
most delicate and artistic stitching, with a degree
of strength, elasticity, and precision never attained
by any other sewing machine. It is, moreover, a
beautiful ornament; is so simple In its movements
that a ohild can operate it, and so perfectly con
structed that it is almost impossible for it to got out
of repair. Purchasers of tlio Wheeler & Wilson
'Machines are instructed in the use of them by com
petent teachers, without charge, either at thoir
homes or at the Instruction Rooms, 701 Chestnut
Street, Every machine is sold with a guarantoo to
jgivo satisfaction, monoy will be refunded to

Of J, W. Price, proprietor of thebest Dining Saloons
in TMlaiilphio-; but no ono who visits tho city
should fall to call at his rooms, southwest corner of
Fourth and Ohostnut streets, ami enjoy, experi
mentally, one of his delicious meals. We have at
various tlmos tried the besthotols in all.the first
cities in the Union, and are free to say. that, for
everything pertaining to genuine gustatory enjoy ■

Editor: PonnitTWO, through columns,
i:o relieve my name of Us involuntary connection
qvlth a vile shoot, published every Sunday.in'.this
-City, evidently in the interest of the rankest disloy
ally. Last Saturday I learned, accidentally, that
’the Sunday Mercury professed to be publishing papers
on petroleum over tuy signature. In yesterday’s
Jtferctiry I found fcho following editorial notion; *•
f ‘TnE Oin Tradr of Pennsylvania.—The

such other facts as-will be of interest to those }Vho

•I have published nothing on petroleum since the
•Patent Office agricultural report of 1862, except a
dShort communication to the American Philosophical
Society, in its proceedings on the West Virginia
•asphaltum vein. I have written no papers for the
Mercury or any other newspaper. It is unnecessary
-to add that nothing eoulddnduee me to write, on any
;SUbject, for a newspaper which I consider has earned
for itself, in the judgment of all good add true Ame
ricans, the epithet u infamous.” It especially roused
ray indignation to find an allusion to myself, in the
•above editorial, coupled with an advertisement of a
•slanderous attack, in the Same issue, upon the Sani
tary Commission, whose good name will ..shine in
■our history when these scribblers of treason* ami be
trayers of justice and truth to the euemies of God:
-and man shall have been punished and pardoned by
hoth—with forgetfulness. lam not in favor of kill
ing people who are unarmed $ but I confess that, if
the dear Lord could induce some of these scoundrels
• to lay down their own lives for the good of the nation,
it would inspirevme with sincere satisfaction. The
man—especially the editor of a newspaper—who, at
auch a time as this, hot only has no word for the party
•of liberty, law, and the future, but, on the contrary,
•does all that ho can, daily and'weekly, to poison the,
tfountainS'Of public sentiment, paralyse the arm of

.skies with clouds of doubt, train our young men and
rgirls at home to think unpatrioticallyand speak dis
loyally, and infuse into our soldiery suspicions,
Tieartburnings, weariness, and despondency—l see
jio harm in importing the whipping-posts from Dela

’publicly whipped, and the worst case among them
branded with tlie letters D, D.—Doctor Detrlmento

'benefit of the nineteenth century and all who expect
vto live happily to the end of it.
June 20,1864. ; J. Peter Lesley.
• How-we Eat—Great Central Fair.-If there
Is one thing more than another that we would call
the attention of the public to—in this great offering
of Philadelphia, to the cause of our noble army—it
is the great facility with which' the immense crowds
of people who daily throng the Fair are fed. it
would seem almost impossible: that any one range
•or kitchener could do all the work that is required
-of it, yet it is not saying too much to assert that
the lt Thomson London Hotel Kitchener,” made
•.expressly for and donated to the Fair by the firm
-Of Chase, Sharpe' &. Thomson, of Philadelphia—
< <the largest house in their line of business in the
"United State's)—does all this, and could do more, if
s lt was required of it. This is by far the largest and:
truest specimen in the way of a cooking range that
--was ever put up in this country, (or we might say in
-any other,) and its working has fully come up to
•the highest expectations of its builders, having
‘ cooked over 10,000 meals in one day. This ICitchoaeri
hotel purposes, is destined to supersede any
thing of the kind now in use; and it is a great pity,
contracted space in the-kitchen of the Fair.
•Will not allow the public witnessing its operations.
.To give some idea of the amount of'cooking done,,
We would say that the receipts from the “Restaur
have averaged daiiy*near $4OO more than was
taken in at the New York Fair on their heaviest
‘day. For the better information of those who are
finable to see It, we would say that the whole length,
jof range is twelve feet four inches, to which aro
added three boilers,#aeh occupying four feet, and
•eight extra stew-holes, each three feet in width,
making in all nearly fifty feet, the entire length of
.the Kitchener. Its value is $l,OOO.
Afc . the close of the Fair, this Kitchener will be
for the benefit of the Fair, and we would 'par
iicularly call tlie attention of hotel-proprietors to
Ibis opportunity of obtaining the finest article In
line ever constructed. There will also be wild
tfor the benefit of the Fairtwo other “Kitcheners”
a smaller size, {which aref on exhibition, and an
additional gift of Ohase, Sharpe & Thomson,) suit
able for priyate residences.

ihe homely, coarse, and vulgar, they will appear to
as much disadvantage and be as ill-received as your
person, though over so well proportioned, would, 1C

of Style In dress are fully appreciated by the tens of
-thousands who buy their clothing at the fashionable

In Longfellow’s Poem Hiawatha was adjudged to
have conferred the greatest boon on Lis tribe because
be brought to Its notice corn. Everyone will admit
that our preparation, is worthy of Us name, for the bene
fits it confers when it is known. .
WHAT THE HIAWATHA DOES.
. It restores faded and gray hair and whiskers to their
original color. It brings up the natural shading of one
hair with another, thus giving the hair aperfect'ilfe
appearance, so that the most critical observer cannot
detect its use. It makes harsh, hair soft and silky, stops
Ur falling out, cleanses U and tho scalp from all impu
rities, is as readily-applied and wiped from the skin as
any hair dressing, and entirely overcomes the .
fects of previous use of preparations containing sulphur,
sugaroflead, Jrc. '
The proprietors of the Hiawatha published tho follow
ing chatlenge.vto test 'in..the Kew York dailies three
weeks, which
WAS NEVER ACCEPTED:
Let some well known and disinterested persons ap
point one to the proprietor of each preparation tor the
hair to bring np the color. Every proprietor to use no
thing bnt his own preparation, and the person nothing
also during the test. A certificate of the result to be
widely published at the expense of the unsuccessful
competitors, Sold everywhere..

** An ideal of female beauty, reposing upon the luxu
ry of itflpwn ftearxatlon, lost in sleep, and yielding with
child-like HHif-ahaUdmiment to dreams of love, M
** How i ike a vision of pure love gbe seems!
cheeks just Hushed with innocent repose,
Tiiat folds her thoughts up in delicious dreams, .
Like dew-drops in the chalice of a rose;
Pillowed npon her arm and raven hair.
How archly rests that bright and peaceful brow!
Its rounded pearl defiance bids to care,
While kisses on the Ups seem melting now;
Prone in unconscious loveliness she lies,
And leaves around her delicately sway;
Veiled is the splendor of her beaming eyes,
But o’er thelimbs bewitching gracespl&y;
Ere into Eden’s groves the serpent crept,
Thus Eve within bar leafy arbor slept!”
