For Ui© first time!« tho history Of oar city, we place

substantial reasons, we doom It proper that tho citizens
of this metropolis should be informed, as to the causes
Which have made this movement a necessity on our

Wo appeal to the phUantimmic,* the generous ami
humane men and women of Philadelphia, to give as a

we do not ask charity 5 we are 1 ofc suppliants for favor.
We are your blood, your kin, tho Wives aud daughters
of American freemen, with their spiritunimating us, in
an earnest dosire to secure the ndoptlou of such mea
sures as will give us independence is the pursuit of in*
dustrial avocations, with proper compensation for our
toll. Wi do not fear or shun work ; wa 3imik it, not as
a pleasure or for pastime, hut as a means of euabling us
to educate and rear our partly orphaned children in
honeatyand industry: to protect our virtue from insult,
and our feci from slippery places; for the purpose of
elevating our condition, thereby improving society: it
1b not ourselves alone, that is,-the present generation,
but our poserlty, that is to be boneflttod by this work;
the future will gather the fruit, and: reap the harvest
resulting from the seed we are now sowing. But it will
liea couKolntion for us to know that we have removed
the rocks that strew our pathway through life, so that
our children, and our children's children,-may wander
amid green pastures and beside the still-waters.
Revolution is the child of oppression, and mighty are
the throea of its birth. It is not a- natural-but an un
natural oilspring, for as long as events proceed in order,
and society is not disturbed in the even teuor of its
life, wo hear of-no commotion,'no'dlsordor,-* no confu

on the contrary, .we prefer an appeal to a discriminating
public, supported by Jacts that cannot be controverted,

many huutlred letters that we have receivod, showing,
how women ai*e,treated.by some of tlieir employers; ,
what prices they receive for making the articles upon
which women work; what suffering and privation they
are compelled to undergo in order to earn enough to

the hours of labor so that they may conform to the re

To appeal to tbe-woinen not necessitated to work for

We have petitioned the Secretary of War to increase
the Arsenal prices; to make it obligatory upon the con

to enlarge the Arsenal of this city so as to g ve increased ,

Second. To correetfalse impressions, &e., he offers to
prove to any disinterested person that Lillie’s Safe-can
be broken by a skillful person in less, time, &c.',.thau
any-other Burglar-Proof Safe. .
This is the very thing he has been trying hardtfco do.
for the sast three years, and it would seem, from'his
own admissions, .with very ill success. .; ' c _
Third. He proposes to open any of LVmeis. Safes,
gold in this city or,State, with the duodeagcn-lock, in
six honrg, or-Tws* without much noise, &c. . or forfeit
$lOO in case of failure. ’ Let us suppose for the moment <■
that he can bring to bear sufficient powei'to grind a
hole through Lillie's Safe in six hours, doe&h© presume
to claim that his or any other BuTglaT-Proof'Safe,reme-.
dies the difficulty in any way whatever?- Not at au. .
.Does he offer to place his Safe aloagsideas a-test? not
at all. And the only contingency is, if he fails, he loses
sloo. Now, it is not denied that a hole-may be ground
through chilled iron or hardened, steel, two inches
thick, having time; enough, sufficient the
necessary accessories. But it is claimed, and can be
shown, that Lillie’s Chilled Iron Safe has the hardest
iroa and the greatest thickness; that it requires a much ;
longer time, andamuch greater power to: grind a hole
through it than any other Safe made and sold at ranch
less price, making it impracticable* for a burglar, with the
facilities he. has, to succeed in this way, and that to.
drill through hard chilled iroa, two iuches thick, with
a common drill And ordinary power, is elsaply im
possible, as any disinterested; iron worker- will acr
knowledge. ■ , ■
; Fourth. The writer proposes to enlighten the burglar
as well as the public,, as to the way and manner of
opening Lillie’s Safe.' He says, he simply Saws off the
top of the brass rim; 4this is quite unnecessary; as it is :
fastened by three small screws *,) ha them simply drills
a bole through thadoor over the centre of the dial; and
picks up the combination of the lock and opens the door
—all very sivinte* truly. Very-much like the Paddy’s
wav of catching birds. ; He said it was very easy to
catch birds: '* Just Sprinkle a little salt on their tails,.
and you had them sure.” : So it is with Lillie 5 a Safe.*
Just drill a hole through the door, two inches thick of
hard chilled iron, and tho door may be got open; but the
point practically is, to get the salt on the tail, or .the
hole through the dooT. To say that any lock is secure
when a punch or powder can be applied to its centre, or
working partj is simply absurd; and it is no objection
to the lock to say that a hole in the right place will pick
up the combination.
Fifth; The Ayriter says one of Lillie’s Safes msy he
seen at Evans &Watson’e store, drilled; and the lock
opened, as he proposes to open it, &c,, ,
how suppose for the moment that one of Lillie’s Safes
is found at E. & W, ’3 with one or more holes ground
through the door,'and one of themhappens tobein the
right place to pick up the combination,-what does it
Prove ? Simply that with a hole through the door4he
lock is not secure, and if the combination, could not be ;
picked up,"the punch would destroy the workiugpart of
thelock, dr powder would blow it off, and the Swe
would be opened, either way being equally practicable
Xor the burglar. In view of all the points made in the
writer’s article, what is the conclusion ? , Simply that
a safe must be drill proof to be burglar proof. -
Again, because the writer shows holes through one of
Lillie’s Safe doors does this prove they are not drill
proof? Not at nil; because it is understood that any iron:
or steel may be ground through; but if the writer will
take up his drill and drill a hole through the door inlhe
reader’s presence; this would certainly prove that Safe
. door not drill-proof, but it would not prove that Lillie’s
Safcß are all or generally not drill-proof. That thia
point may be more fully uuderetood, I now ask anv
party interested.to coma to my store,. No. 21-South s
KEVENTH Street, .and bring, along -tbs: best, drill
and the best iron worker m-the city of Philadelphia,
and the party shall hare the privilege of testing a great
number and variety of Safes, and if they are not found
thoroughly and unifornilydrill ; proof,l wM bind myuelf
'to pay the expense of testing ,them and the ex
pense of publishing the result of the examination, that
the Public may have, the henedt of the investigation;
and if any of my patfons choose in this way to test their
own Safes, and it is found they are not thorough y drill
proof, they shall: have a Snfn thafcis, or Iwillrefund
. I would y state, also, that I have juft received due of
Evans & Watson’ smiddie-sized Safes which was opened
and robbed at Gettysburg, Fa. j last summer, by: the
rebels, (I am informed in less than five rainuies,) by .
cutting out a panel in the top of the Safewith an old
‘ axe, not disturbing the lock in: the least; and this is a
modern Safe which the writer now offers as amercantilo
safe and an improvement to the; sample of Lillie’s Safe 1
which he has oh exhibition. Fartiesinterested are par
ticularly requested to examine this Safe, that the 05m
par&tivemerits may • •■■ -MritCKr

character, and a respectable sum shall be pledged that, ,
with the same means and the same amount of iaboxv

W. ’sfeafe in one-third the rime that the I^ ri f. or his
asent, shall drill or grind through Lillie’s. Bat to give
a S safe-maker six hours, with unlimited power and
labor to grind a hole through a\Safe-door, is simply ;
nrenorierSsv But when the writer is disposed to,have;
ti«SfS?ly tested by the . side of Lillie Vhis success
throne* tBeSoW into the lock is fatal. The door must
be of sufficient strength and thickness to keldtkelock
innoßition* and the lock so attached to the door that it
cannotbe driven or forcedwtih.a jack-screw from Hs
position The lock must be so constructed that itt.au-
Sot bS picked by the micrometer or any other ap-
surface of the Safe should be entirely Tree
from wrought iron; There should not be even a rivet
that any cuttiugimplement can ©fleet; but the wrought
iron should be on the iuuer, surface to sustain the
chilled Ivon on the outer. All these advantages Lillie s
Chilled Iron Safe possesses thoroughly anu substau
tiaHvi and all parties interested are particularly re-
