brandy, gin, and rum, the former cow beia£ about as
di’ffl cult to obtain pure and anii&iitfer&ted as if used to
be common and of good quality. The result of the
scarcity of good spirituous liquors has been to introduce
into the market a species of beverage-composed of pure
spirits combined with some tonic vegetable extract, the
compound being known as Bitters. These ‘ ‘ Bitters”
arfe, generally speaking, as far superior terthh spirituous
liquors ordinarily retailed at bars and taverns as possible
and cinch less injurious than even the bestspirits are,
for their tonic effects counterbalance the inffammatory
action that accompanies all alcoholic drinks. But even
in the manufacture of this class of popular beverages,
there is more or less adulteration, and therefore care is
required in making a selection, in order that She best
quality may be procured.
. The best in the market that we have yet seen Ss that
known as the ‘ * Golden Bitters, ’ ’ which is warranted of
the best materials, and composedofextractsfrompxirelr
vegetable sources. .
- A medical analysis which Mr. HTJBBEL had made
for the purpose, shows that his Bitters are eminently
calculated to relieve tbedyspeptic, and afford that gentle
stimulant necessary to assist the weak and infirm to
bear with, the fatigues of daily life. The time will come .
when these Bitters will supersede thepoisonous drinks
how imbibed at our public bars, and when this change
takes place we shall hear of fewer cases of mad drunk
enness and less deaths from delirium tremens. —-Brook

-RSkil LIDLIE’S SO-CALLED EUR
&MIIGLAB-PEOOF SAFES EXPOSED, AND SHOWN
TO BE INSECURE.
In the Evening Telegraph of AprillS, 1364, Mr. C. C.
Saddler, agent for Lewis Lillie, of Troy, New York,
asserts that <tlre burglar-proof safes of the said Lewis
Lillie, with his duodecagon lock, with his anti-micro
meter, attachment, are'the only ones that afford any
protection, to bankers and others who have valuables
which they wish to leave in them, and publishes a long
list of safes which have been opened by burglars and
his agents.' Now I, David Evans, of the firmof Evans
& Watson, of the city of Philadelphia, to correct the
false impression made upon-the mind of tho public by
the said publication, as well as the representation of.
the officers of some of our city.banks; who, for some
reason, are inclined to lend themselves to the said Sad
dler,. and aid him in decrying the manufactures of their
own city for the benefit of this New York firm, make
the following statement. I offer to prove to any disia--
terested person's that the so-called burg Ur-proof safes
can be opened by a skillful person in less time, with
less noise or chance of detection, than any other bur**
glar-proof safe now in the market, thus showing that so
far.from being the best, they are really the ieast.reliable
of an) ; make of safes.
I now offer to open any safe sold by him as a hank or
burglar-proof safe iu the city of Philadeiphiaor State of
Pennsylvania, depending upon Ms patent chilled iron
and duodecagon lock, without making noise enough to
ilisturb any person sleepiug ihjfthe adjoining-room, iu
from a half hour to six hours, according to the thick
ness or hardness of the door, and will give any bank or
banker one hundred dollai-s-for the privilege of opera
lingupon a first-class Lillie’s burglar-proof safe, sold
prior to this time by the said C.\ 0. Saddler or L. Lillie.
And in case I do not succeed in opening said safe, I will
repair the safe as good as it was before I commenced
work upon it,-the one hundred dollars to bo paid before
I commence operations, and’in case of failure the said
one hundred dollars to be forfeited. ■
To prevent any misconstruction, and prove the since
rity of my statements, 1 will now state the maimer la
which I propose to operate. I first saw off the top of
the brass rim over the. lock dial; I then drill a hole
through the door, directly ovor the dial, as close as
possible, and immediately over the centre. I then in
sert a piece of wire, "about an eighth of an inch thick,
.through the .hole so drilled, turning the knob of the
Jock dial to the right until the pin; enters tho first tum
bler, when, it will pass in about a quarter of an inch,
then turn the knob to the left till the pin passes into the
second tumbler, then to the. right' again till it passes
hrough the next tumbler, and in case of a large bank
safe, again to the left, until it passes into the last tum
bler. I then throw the bolt, first pulling the pin out.
: The public -may Boe one of these burglar-proof safes
.drilled in various places, and the lock opened in this
manner, by calling at the store of EVANS & WATSON,
> T o.'l<V South FOURTH Street, where the whole opera
tion will be fully explained, and the insecurity of these
safes demonstrated.
