    PERSONAL.
—For sleekness and apparent respectability of de
portment, Fernando Wood is the gem of the Oppo
aition side of the House. Seen from the gallery, ho
looks like A Well-to-do Methodist minister. He is
tall, and long-waisted and straight, and wears his
sleek coat buttoned up to within a few inches of a
very white collar, which makes him seem taller,
and longer-waisted and straighter still, and loaroa
a Clerical spareness of a very white bosom. Ills
face, latitudinally and longittnlinally considered,
is ample, but has the effect of length and sleekness.
Ilia hair is long and black, and sleek, and looks a
little wiggish. He walks -with an erect, measured,
meditative tread ; has a stately, nonchalant way of
'writing when loyal members speak, and a benign
way of listening when any of his own clan begin to
relive themselves.
—Brigadier General Smith arrived In Louisville
on Sunday last, from Chattanooga. He was on his
way to Chicago. General Milroy, recently com-
Wianding in 'Western irginin, arrived on the same
day from Cincinnati. He is under Orders to report
to general Sherman for duty.
Some of the Disraeli party haying reflected on
Mr. Stansfeld as "lotsing been a brewer," are as
sured by a friend of his that " oven if the charge be
true, nevertheless Mr. Stansfield is thirtieth in de
scent from Alfred the Groat, eighteenth from Henry

:Tames IL Schneider, chaplain of the 2d
Colored U. S. Regiment, died at Key West, in Flo- .
rida, on the 25th of April. His father is a well-
known missionary at Aintab, in Turkey, and his
son, the, chaplain, was born there, but was educated
In this country, haying graduated at Yale. He was
familiar withthe Turkish language, which may bo
called his native tongue. It IS an Interesting fact
that in his dying hours he spolm in Turkish, calling
for water, which his attendants were able to under
stand front the signs housed.

How To RI - Dom—The most unfailing test of the
value of any mechanical invention is that which
demOnSn'ates what it can perform. .Tudged by this
rule, the "Florence" Sowing Machine, sold at 630
Chestnut street, is vastly superior to any other sew
ing machine in the world. It is universally popu„.-
lar with all who try it, and It has this additional
recommendation to purchasers, that every machine
sold is warranted to give satisfaction, or the money
will be refunded. •
THE Escomsn 'WALKING HAT, made and sold by
Ilfood & Cary, 725 Chestnut street, is deservedly
popular with all ladies of taste. For grace, comfort,
and style it has no equal.

"KEEP UP YOUR SPIRITS."—GentIe reader are
you an invalid? Are you afflicted with corns? HaVe
ou Jain awake, night after night, with a teeth
che 1' Have you sighed and striven, under an ac
cumulation of physical disorders, for the irresis

into an oath by that most pitiful advice "keep
up your spirits." If so, we commiserate you ; from
our soul we, do. If, on the other hand,,you be free
from those lesser ills " to which the flesh is heir, ,,
we advise you, considerately, to "keep up your

GEN - Enar, Ar.mv.—lt appears that since
the measles have loft off troubling our men in the
field, the collar-ah has attacked them, at least those
under General Banks' command, if we were to judge
by the wagcn-load orpaper-collars captured from
'him on the Red vicar the other day. Fits of choler
are not becoming n general, but if his collar fits, it
is. Speaking of fits, we would refer to the well
fitting clothing made by Charles Stokes St Co., un

IT IS A FAULT Ix MAN' Alnntomns, that while
they are removing the disease they are prostrating
the patient beyond. recovery. Dr. Jayne's Altera
tire has no such drawback. On the contrary, while
it neutralizes the virus of the disease at its very
source, it sustains - the strength of the sufferer.
Scrofula, in all its multiplied forms, is completely
eradicated by it.
Career, Cancerous and Scirrhous Tumors, are
speedily and effectually cured by it.
Skin Diseases, comprising all varieties of Cuta
neous Affections, are removed by this Alterative.
Epilepsy, Convulsions, or • Fits—The Alterative
not only suppresseS the attacks of this disease, but,
by its action, the morbid tendency to a relapse is
removed.
This standard remedy enters into the circulation
and passes with tho. blood, which it purifies, into
every tissue and fibre of the body, so that, no mat
ter what is the nature of the disease, nor where It
Is located, it is sure to be reached and expelled from
the system. The afflicted should try it at once.
Prepared only at No. 242 Chestnut street. myl.o-2t
AN OLD REMEDY AND A SIIEE ONE.—We ask
no more of any one than to give Jayne's Expecto
rant a fair trial, to prove that it will cure the vari
ous diseases for which it is recommended. It has,
It will, and can cure Coughs, Colds, Asthma, Bron
chitis, Bleeding of the Lungs, Whooping Cough,
Ciroup, and a very large majority of the most hope
less cases of Consumption, where all other remedies
fail to do any good. Let the afflicted give it a trial.
Prepared only at 242 Chestnut street. myl9-21
CORNS, BUNIONS, INVERTED NAILS, ENLARGED
JOINTS, and all diseases of the feet, cured without
pain or inconvenience to the patient, by Drs. Zaoha

HOYT'S . HIAWATHA HAIR RESTORATIVE.
In Longfellow's Poem Hiawatha was adjudged to
have conferred the greatest boon on his tribe because
he brought to its notice corn. Every one will admit
hat oar preparation is worthy of its name, for the be
nefits it confers when it is known.
WHAT THE HIAWATHA DOES.
It restores faded and gray hair. and whiskers to their
original color. It brings up the natural shading of one
hair with another, thus giving the hair a perfect life
appearance, so that the most critical observer cannot
detect its use. It makes harsh hair soft and silky, stops
its falling out, cleanses it and the scalp from all Impu
rities, is as readily applied and wiped_ from the skin as
any hair dressing; and entirely overcomes the bad- et
feats of previous use of preparations contaluiugsnlphux,
sugar of lead, Sic.
The proprietors of the Hiawatha published the fol
lowing challenge to test in the New York dailies three
weeks, which
WAS NEVER ACCEPTED
Let some well known and disinterested persons ap
point one to the proprietor of each preparation for - the
hair to bring up the color. Every proprietor to use
nothing but his own preparation, and the person
nothing also during the test. A certificate of the re-
SUMO be 'widely published at the expense ofthe nn•
successful competitors. Sold everywhere.

These Bonds are issued under the Act of Congress of
March Sth, 1864, which provides that all Bonds issued
under this s 'Act SHALL BE REDEEMED IN COIN, at
the pleasure of the Government, at any period not less
than nor more than forty years Oora their date, and'
until their redeMption FIVE PER CENT. INTEREST
WILL BE PAID IN COIN, on Bonds of not over one
hundred dollars annually, and on all other Bonds semi
annually. The interest is payable on the first days of.
March and September in each year. .
As these Bonds, by Act of Congress, are
EXEBTPT FROM MI7NICIPAL OR STATE TAXATION,
their value is increased from one to three per cent.• per
manilla, according to the rate of tax leVies' in various
parts of the country. •
At the present rate of premium on gold they pay
OVER EIGHT PER CENT. INTEREST
in currency, and are of equal convenience as a perma

It is believed that no securities offer so great induce
ments to lenders as the various descriptions of U. S.
Bonds 7 In all other forms of indebtedness, the faith or
ability of private parties or stock 'companies, or sepa
rate communities, onlY is pledged for payment, while
for the debts of the United States the whole property of
the country
is-holden to secure the payment of boils
principal and interest in coin.
These Bonds may be subscribed for in sums from 350
up to any magnitude, on the same terms, and are thus
made equally available to the smallest lender and the
largest capitalist. They can be converted into money at
any moment, and the holder will have the benefit of the
interest.
The Funded Debt of the United States on which interest
is payable in gold, on the 3d day of March, 1564, was
$765,965,000. The interest - ou-this debt for the coming
fiscal year will be $45,937,126, while the customs reve

Kathairon is from the Greek word "Kathro," or
" Kathairo," signifying to cleanse, rejuvenate, and
restore. This artic!e is what its name signifies. For
preserving, restoring, and beautifying the HUMAN'.
HAIR it is the most remarkable preparation in the
world. It is again owned and put up by the original
proprietor, and is now made with the same care, skill,
and attention which gave it a sale of over one million
bottles per annum.
It is a most delightful Hair Dressing.
It eradicates scurf and dandruff.
It keeps the head cool and clean.
It makes the hair rich, soft, and glossy.

ITIIMSTREET'S INIMITABLE MAIM AUTO
BATITE.-NOT A DYE,
Bat restores gray hair to its original color, by supplying
the capillary tubes with natural sustenance, impaired
by age or disease. All instantaneous dyes are composed
of lunar caustic, destroying the vitality and beauty of
the hair, and afford of themselves no dressing. Heim
street's Inimitable Coloring not only restores the hair to
its natural color by an easy process, but gives the hair
LUXURIANT BEAUTY,
promotes its growth, prevents its falling off, eradicates
dandruff, and imparts health and pleasantness to the
head. It has stood the test of time, being the original
Hair Coloring, and is constantly increasing in favor.
Used by both gentlemen and ladies. It is sold by all re
spectable-dealers, or can be procured by them of the
commercial agents, D. S. BARNES &CO.-, 202 BROAD
WAY, New Tork. Two sizes, 50 cents and $l.
MEM MUSTANG lINIMENT.
The parties In St. !Louis and Cincinnati who have
been counterfeiting . the Mustang Liniment, under pre
tence of proprietorship, have been thoroughly estopped
by the courts. To guard against further imposition, I
have procured from the United States Treasury a private
steel-plate revenue stamp, which is placed over the top
of each. bottle. Each stamp bears the Jae simile of my
signature, and without which the article is a counter
feit, dangerous, and worthless imitation. Examine
every bottle. This Liniment has been in use and grow
ing in favor for many years. There hardly exists a
hamlet on the habitable globe that does not contain evi
dence of its wonderful effects. It is the best emollient
in the world. With its present imdroved ingredients,
its effects upon man and beast aro perfectly remarkable.
Sores ite healed, pains relieved, lives saved, valuable
animalr made useful, and untold ills assuaged. For
aruises, sprains, rheumatism, swellinlis, bites, cuts,
caked breasts,-strained horses, Sic., it is a sovereign re
medy that should never be dispensed with. it should
he in every family. Sold by all druggists.
