RELIGIOUS BIEL LIGENCE. Meeting in - Behalf of tile Northern Rome for Friendless Children. We have been requested to state that the minted electing of the Northern Home for Friendless children will be held to-morrow (sun day) evening, at the Filet Reformed Dutch Church, Seventh and Spring Garden streets (Rev. J. H. Suydam, pastor). As this is one of the noblest, and, we believe, best menaced of benevo. lent institutions, everything c alculated to awaken additional interest in iii behalf deserves the atten tion of the Christian public: and ire hope, therefore, to see the church filled with flynipiiiiiwing friends Ort thin occasion. Th e mec tleg will be ably addressed by Rey Mr. Suydam and others. New CntreCti volt THE Rev. M. AnAltra.—The (N. S. Presbyterian) church edifice, corner of Bread and Green streets, is needy completed. The pastor of the congregation fur which it is intended, the L E. Adams, has been for some time pest in ill health, though he Is now improving and able oc casionally to preach. By the generous consent of his charge. however, he will riot resume his active duties as pastor until next fall, intending to spend the intervening months anon„ his native hills of New Remyahlre. The new elemoh will probably , not be immally Opened until Mr. Adams' return. The Sunday school and weekly services have been for some time past held in the basement of the church, entrsece on Green street. We learn that a fine organ has heed built for the new church, and that no lAMB will be spared to render the edifice, when opened, one of the most comfortable and at tractive in the city. Neville° TO HAVE GOD ReCOONIZen IN THE C ON ETITNTION.—Tits fact that there is no direct re cognition of the Supreme Ruler of the Universe in the,Americen "Magna Charts." has at various times been the veleta of criticiem and regret. B. Simmons, has had a severe puireeeery Week, and has received a furlough till September. He has not been able to preach for a month past. The congregation, though not wealthy, is active and liberal, and surprises its sister churches by the amount of its contributions, not only for its current esperses, but for all benevolent objects, Rev. Dr. Malcom, pastor of this church when it met in SEIIIOIII street, resides near, and is a member, as is also the Rev. W. Livermore, a refugee from the South. HANDSOME DONATIONS.—As donations to Sant tary Fairs are now viewed in the light of a religious duty, there can be no impropriety in chronicling the following interesting incident, in this column or The Press: "The finance committee of the New York Sanitary Fair called upon Commodore Vanderbilt, and solici• ted at his hands a donation. He answered that he would give an mush to the fair as "any other man" in 'New York. Thereupon, the committee visited Mr. A. T. Stewart, and reported to him the offer of the Commodore. Stewart at onoe drew his check for sioo, oto, and handed it to the committee, and they. armed with the check, again waited upon the (10m modore, and showed him the contribution of Stew. art. The Crest Central Fair. To the Editor of The Press: Sin : In your paper of today, in an article on the "Great Sanitary Fair," you have spoken of Mr. John Rice as the contractor for the buildings now emoting in Logan square. It is clue to that gentle man that this error should be corrected, and tart it should be known to the public that Mr. Rice is not a contractor, nor is he connected professionally With any part of the work being done there ; but that, as a member of the Buildics Committee, he hes rem doted most effiaient and valuable services, besides having generously contributed towards the object of the fair. It is quite likely that the enbject will receive favorable consideration, and its execution will be one of the most attractive and profitable features of the Fair. Its originality is the attraction, and the charge of twentt.five cents tgainat every lady who would designate her favo rite will constitute its profit. The only objection i- that whichis urged by some of the ladies them selves, who Would be much more delighted to know that their influence was so far felt as to be more practical than theoretical. Nevertheless, the ladies will no doubt chow a zeal and earnestness in the matter that will parallel, if it does not excel the en thusiasm at which they find so much fault with brothers, fathers, husbands. and lovers, during a political canvass. They will doubtless vote early, and vote often, and bring up their friends to do likewise, who, perhaps, to excel, all others might vote oftener and vote earlier. What ever may be iheoght of the suhj.ct, it is be pied doubt that the great aim of holding the Fair merely to swell the treasury of the Sanitary Com mission, will be greatly prcmoted. What lady woo visits she Fair has not a preference for the Presi dency, and who would not willingly part with a por tion of her postage currency to give that preference a real and substantial shape? It will doubtless en hance the interest which the Fair is everywhere exciting, and will necessitate the mininilttee to make even larger provisions for the site of ticeets of admission to the Fair. The idea is en tirely a lads's, who is greatly sanguine of its success, We all unow how successful was the sword content in . the. New York Sanitary Fair, realizing over $40,000 that might!other wise have been lost to the Commission. It is designed to have a sword contest at our Fair • but the females, with a degree of selfishness that is not always credited to them, desire to have a field that is entirely their Own. Let them have it, and they will give evidence at once of what the female portion of this section of the World can do for charity anti for country. NERVOUS EXCITEMENT.—The recent boiler explosions in our city have caused people ge nerally to become quite nervous ; especially those who reside in the vicinity where steam-boilers are in constant daily use. One or two instanoae that have been brought to our notice show this feeling. On the scorning after the explosion at Messrs. (Mr relius Si BskerPs manufactory, a little girl WAN A4en loitering about the door of a boiler-mon, adjacent to her home. She seemed to be doubting about en tering or leaving. She was observed by the engi neer, who asked her what she wanted. She beckon ed him to the door. " Please sir," said she, " mo ther ouch won't you be careful with your boiler VI Upon saying this she hastened home, having deli vered hrr message under very trying circumstances. We heaid of another instance, which shows the nervousness of mankind. Four or five gentlemen were standing in an engine room. discussing the huh• jest of the recent explosion. The engineer pushed up the safety valve, to try his steam. Instantly upon the puff' being made, these gentlemen took " French leave." They thought the boiler had burst. They recovered themselves in a moment, had a laugh among themselves, though one of them said that for a moment he "felt a goitiniesx about the stomach." A very large steam boiler, located not far from a rublic school house, became overheated, steam valves were opened, the damper was closed, and the fire put out. The screaming steam resounded in the neigtborheod, and midents, for the moment, left their houscs. Luckily for nearly 800 ehillren, the school had adjourned some time before. Teen oc currences point hire index fingers to the general feeling, of course. If it is electricity that explodes a boiler, and not simply steam, it is very clear that a proper agency, simple in its construction, can be and should be applied at once, so as to appease the minds of thousands of our citizens, who are thrown into convulsions almost upon hearing the sound of tics pOg steam. • ACCIDIMTS.—A boy named John Rivel, aged twelve years, had his left hand cut off yester day morning by being caught in the picker at Ste. vans & Whittaker's mill, Blanavunk. Ile was con veyed to the hospital His brother Henry, aged ten yearn, while attempting to rescue him, had one of his hands injured. Matthias Maher, aged sixteen years, had his left arm torn off yeetelday morning by being caught in a shaft at a mill in illanayunk. He was taken home. Yesterday afternoon a lad named Timothy Canty, aged oat Nevi § had both of his legs badly injured by being run over on the North Pennsylvania Rail road, on America street, above Messer. He was carrifd to the residence of his parents, in Lloyd street, where his right leg was amputated. The driver of the team, Henry Davis, (colored,) was ar reatrd by the police. A GREAT IMP.ROVEILENT IN SEWING MIICHTNES.—On the 26th inet. a ;Aleut was granted to Charles Parham, of this city, for certain new and useful improvements in shuttle-sewing machines. By the combination all the various sHtehea may be made, (both single and double thread,) including a new buttonhole stitch on the lock or shuttle prin ciple, with the same instrument. An entirely new branch of trade will be reached, such as the sewing of carpets, awnings, salts, am., using the overlap or whip stitch. From all appearances this patent will prove to beone of immense importance to the pub. lie, and of great value to the inventor, as we under stand that several heavy capitalists of this city, New York, and Boston, are now organizing a com pany for manufacturingunder the above patent, and ere preparing to get Hilo immediate operation. SOLDIER2' CONTItraCTION.—The Secre tary of the United States Christian Commission re ceived yesterday a contribution of $2lO from the 21 Vermont Regiment', with a letter from the chaplain of the regiment, Rev. A. Mack, who write) that it is forwarded as a thank- offering, to he expensed by the Commission in furnishing secular and reli gious reading for the army. In doing this, he says that the above contribution has been made without any solicitation on the part of the Commission, but purely as as egpreasion of appreciation of the many favors received, as a regiment, from the institution. MORE RAILROAD ; Byr crreffTs.—Chriatian Drake, aged 4% years, wEs run over by a car at Twfinly•fourth street And Pennsylvania Avenue, by which one of his lees was badly crushed. He was removed to the St. Joseph's Hospital. Timothy Carty, aged eight years, was run over by a mule.teaml on the North Pennsylvania Railroad, near America street, by which both his legs were shockingly crushed. One of them had to be ampu tated. The unfortunate boy was taken to his home, in Lloyd's court. The driver of the team was ar• rested. COI:MTS.—In the courts yesterday but lit tle Malmos was done. In the case of Seld9mridge vs. Fretton & Sehollenberger, in the District Court, before Judge Bare, the !jury rendered a verdict in favor of plaintiff for the amounts claimed, without interest. The court then adjourned. The Court of Quarter Sessions adjourned after a session of half an hoar, there being no eases ready for trial. SLIGHT FIRE.—A fire broke out yester day morning in the upper part of a dwelling back Of No. 131 Christian street, owned and occupied in a dwelling and grocery store by Thos. Rider. The flames were confined to the loft and roof. The damage done was slight, and Is covered bp insurance. A son of the occupant was arrested and locked up on suspicion of having fired the building. The Fire Marshal win investigate the case. ARRIVED.—The 043 sick anti wounded soldiers, from the hospitals at Washington, arrived yesterday morning about 6 o'clock, as mentioned in The Press. It is more than four years since et e was able to attend to household duties. I have been compelled to employ a houtekeeper. We had given np doctoring as useless. Most providentially, and through the blessing of God , my housekeeper went up to Ringsepang, Penna., to see her sister. We then sent for Mrs. M. G Brown's " Metaphysical Discovery." and my wife has used it faithfully, and the result is that the womb disease, which was so bad, is entirely gone.
