The cause of the exploeion will be for the coro
ner and hie jury to investigate. We may state that
the engineer has been employed in the establish.
ment for a period of about teal ears ; is a compe
tent and careful man. lie was attending to his
business as tonal. The Water- test Aped, and
had been no for some time, suppty ins atotglily about
as much of the cguenua element as the steam ex
hausted. There wee. pressure of sixty -live pounds of
steam on, and as the ermine was not working as fast
as the ritual rate of speed, a heavier pressure was
contemplated.
The tngineer had gone into another part of the
building to obtain some oil or sotnethieg else, and
was just about to return to the engine when the ex.
plosion took place. Messrs Co.nehue and Peke;
- reeling the immense responsibirity resting upon
them, had enerelsed every preenutien against such
a deplorable acetate-at. A. steam settee had been
placed in the effete', so that a watonful eye could tee
kept upon it by the heads of the (Moat talent. One
of the clerks of the estarelehment informed us, yes
terday morning, that this alio indicated a pressure
of sixty five pounds. The boilers, every nOW and
then, had b eon inspected. They were carefully
overhauled on Saturday night, and the steam en
tirely blown out. Yesfereay morning the boilers

George and Rudolph Reese, brothers. residing at
522 N pith Eleventh street. were not far distant from
the boiler when it exploded. B oh. were badly in
jured; Rudolph, it is thought, fatally.

bands, arms, chest, thighs, with nitric acid (coin-

Tobias L. Snyder, the bricklayer who Was at

was identified. He cannot survive. His death was

George Hess, aged 30 leant, serious fracture of the
jaw, right thigh fractured, forearm wouerted i both
arms burned with acid. Severely.
Thomas H. Alberson, ehoceingly wounded in the
face, arms, legs, and contusion in the abdomen.

Leonard Schalk, aged 41 years, burnt on both arms,
',eyelid scalp Wounds, nu contusion on the hack.
Theodore Ackley, aged 23 years, Third anti Girard
avenue, wound in heao.
Joseph Shearer, aged 55 years, West Philadelphia,
aide and !clip badly lacerated.
Peter Miller, aged 35 years, 605 Parrish street,
flesh wound in hip and scalp.

George Scanlan, residing on Seventeenth street,
near Shippen, was slightly injures. Taken home.
The bodies of three men, who were keledinstant
ly, and so horribly disfigured that they could not be
identified at once, were removed to the reception
room of Cyrus Herne, the undertaker, by order of
Messrs. Cornelius & Baker, with inatructions to
have their remains put into proper condition for re.
Cognition. In regard to the excitement, as might De
expected, it was immense. Fire companies were
speedily upon the ground, and the water was turned
upon the hot brink'. The ambulances! of the firemen
were also speedily in attendance, to render any aid
that 'eight he considered necessary. The bodies
taken to the undertakers were recognized, last eve
ning, as those of Wm. Bartholomew a moulder;
Albert Schaffner, and Fry.
Coroner Taylor spent the entire day in selecting a
jury of scientific gentlemen, and succeeded in eb
tandng Messrs. Coleman Sellers, John Tyree°, Sa
muel J. °resew% Profeesrs Henry Morton, Robert
E. Rodgers, and J. F. Frazier. The jury will meet
at half oast three o'clock this afternoon at the coro
ner's office, on Fifth stieet, below Chestnut. It Will
be seen by the above report that five persons were
killed and eighteen wounded. It was reported last
evening at the hospital that two, if not three, were
mortally wounded. Most of the unfortunates were

till the end or 1888, when I began to mend, and du

In January, 1863, my brother and I moved from
Bremplon, London, to St. John's Wood, north of
the Regent's Palk, where we had a pretty villa,
within half an horn's walk of Elampstead H lath,

near Windsor, in a charming villa on the ooldere of
the forest.
Having some time here that we do not require for
domestic occupation, I have taken the oplidrtualty
of having down some of the boxes of family papers,

London; these I em mow in course of examining,
and found a very interesting occupation, and in a
happier period of your country should enlarge more

PRESENTATIO7 , .I" OF A BATTLE FLAG.—The
battlerlas of the 69 h Regiment P. V. has been pre
sorted by Major. William Davis to Mayor Henry,
with a request that it be placed in Independence
Hall. In forwarding it, the Major writes to Mayor
Henry that "the flag has been at the head of the regi
ment in every battle and contest from the battle of
Ball's Bluff; where B 'her fell, to the present time.
It has been with the regiment ha its triumphs and
when defeated, but it never hat been stained with
shame or dishonor. - As the medium of the brave
men whom I have the honor to command, I place it
in your hands, representing as you do the city of our
residence; and I trust that at some future day,
when peace shall have from the memory of the pre
sent generation erased the terrors of a civil war, it
may be as a monitor to guard well against strifes
which may lead to war and trouble,”

placed in the hands of a comrade a daguerreotype of
his wife and two children, saying that her name
was Mrs. P. W. Hammond, Twenty.eecond ward,
Germantown, and requesting that it might be for
warded. This soldier, on arriving at Baltimore,
gave the daguerreotype to one of Mr. Cordon's
(State military agent) assistants, who went down
there to visit the returned prisoners and see to their
tvants. Mr. Corson has not been able to rind the
lady, and those acquainted with her whereat+onts

travelled 20 miles on foot before reaching the Union

Thomas Walls. a cab-driver. was arraigned yesterday
morning on the charge of robbing a man named Nicho
las Bowman. It seems that Mr kowman bad arrived
at the Baltimore Debot Life on Friday night from 'am

:face. Walls agreed to take him to his house. Bowman
was driven to the residence, or surmised residence, of

The charge egeinst the defendant is for having signed
his name as a witness to the signing of the above con
sent by the father. thereby enabling the boy to be en.
listed. The fact was that the father never ieg,el the
Taper at all, his name having been emitted by the
son. There were several each forgeries in the cases of
as many boss between fourteen ana seventeen yeare
old, all witnessed by the defendant, and spot' which
the boy e were enabled to be enlieted. According to the
testimony of the boys. some, who were not apparently
more - than fourteen years old, bad no difficulty in pass
ing the surgeon's examination.
On behalf or the defence.it was set up that Martin was

recruit. The boys pretested themselves. and. having

the content. The papers were brought back signed. as
