CITY ITEMS.
' Thb “ Gbovbk A Bakbr” Shwing Machinu
agbibbt thb World.—lt ie a perfectly safe pro
position, on the pert of the Qrovdr & Baker Sewing
Machine Company, to challenge comparison with all
Other Sewing Machines. There are several thou
sand of these admirable instruments in use in this
city alone, and among the entire number there could
not be found one owner who would willingly ex
change hie machine for any of it* rivals, though the
latter should be furnished at half price. This ma
chine, it Win be borne in mind, is the only one ever
invented whioh performs fine Embroidery. We
may state in this Connection also that the Stitching
Booms at the splendid office of the Grover & Baker
Company, No. 730 chestnut street, are now attract
ing much attention. Sewing of all kinds is exe
cuted here at the ehorteat notice, and an elegant line
of made-up articles is constantly kept on hand.
Elegant Spring Stock.—Messrs. C. Somers &
Son, No. 62S Chestnut street, under Jayne’s Hall,
are now opening the most elegant and desirable
stock >f Spring Garments, made up in the latest
style*, from the choicest materials, mainly of their
own importation, that they : have ever offered.
Gentlemen either wishing to order Shirts, or to pro
cure them in the best style ready-made, will serve
themselves handsomely, and save money by visiting
this popular old house.
Gbit. Grant Goins to Washington.—Lieute
nant General Grant is to be permanently located at
Washington, and will proceed to that city as soon as
he can conclude certain military arrangements. His
principal object in being at the seat of Government
is to direct the movements of all the armies, and to
be near to Philadelphia, so as to be able to procure
his wearing apparel at the Brown-Stone Clothing
Hall of Boohhill & Wilson, Nos. 603 and 605
Chestnut street, above Sixth.
April Showbbs.—The season is clearly one
month ahead of itself. We had February in Janas,
ry, Maroh in February, and are having April in
Ma'roh. Of course we shall have May in April, and
so on, unless something happens to change the pro
gramme Yet all this ean have no effect upon the
universally-acknowledged fact that W. W. Alter
535 North Ninth street, sells the beat and cheapest
■Coal in Philadelphia.
‘The Greatest Invbwtiowof tub Age. —Among
'the thousands of visitors constantly ebbing and
flowing at the agenoy of the Florence Sewing Ma
chine Company, there is not one of ordinary intelli
gence who is not struck with the almost superhuman
perfection of this wonderful machine. It makes no
less XhKnftmr dijfferent stitches (all the most deairal
Me ones that exist), and executes sewing of all kinds
-with a degree of neatness, strength, and elasticity
that has never heretofore been equalled in ma
chinery. Every one of these superior machines
-sold is guarantied to give aatiifaatian, or the money
-will be refunded to the purchaser after a proper
trial.
Tfe “ Pp-ize- Medal ” Shibt, invented by Mr.
John P- Taggart, and sold by Mr. George Grant, 610
Chestnut street, is, without exoeptlon, theheatshiri
of the age, in fit, comfort, beauty, anil durability.
His stock of Gentlemen’* Famishing Goods, of his
own exclusive manufacture and importation, is also
the choicest in the city, and hiß prices are moderate.

Ladles’ and Misses’ Fine Cloaks.
Ladies’ and Misses’ Fine Cloaks.
Also,
Bich Furs of all kinds.
Rich Furs of all kinds.
In anticipation of the dote of the teaaon, we art
now prepared to make a large concession from for*
jmer prices on all our stock.
J. W. Proctor & Co.,
The Paris Cloak and Fur Emporium,
930 Chestnut street.
A Babe Tbeat.—Professor Edward Dunbar, who
created quite a sensation at the Academy of Music,
last Fiiday evening, will deliver a lecture on “Our
Country and the War,” at Concert Hall, this eve
ning. He will also sing several popular songs. The
proceeds are for the benefit of the widows and
orphans of the soldiers of the Union. This of itself
ought to secure a crowded audience.
Zeno, of all virtues, made choice of silence; for
by it, said he, “I hear other men’s imperfeotions,
and conceal my own.” Silence may be a virtue at
times, but we doubt if even Zeno would have been
silent, had he been familiar with the name and fame
of Granville Stokes, the celebrated clothier, No. 609
Chestnut street.
“ Tee city of Kiehmond—they passed near it, Kil
patrick and his men, and Custar, and then let
her be in her glory.” The person who penned
this paragraph has been arrested for false swearing,
but after the suit is commenced nobody will know
when it will be finished. Suits commenced at
Charles Stoke* Si Co.’*, under the Continental, are
generally finished the next day. Suitors, hear this
In mind.
At thb salesroom of Scott & Stewart, No. 622
Chestnut street, there is as fine a collection of oil
paintings, mounted In rich gold-leaf frames, as we
have witneesed for several yean, and we think those
who wish to purchase would do well to examine
them before the sale, which take, place next Thurs
day, Friday, and Saturday eveningr, March 17th,

Office of thh Committee os' Labor,
Incomes and Revenues,
No 118 south Seventh Street,
• Philadelphia* March is, 1861.
The Committee on Labor, Incomes, and. Revenues, of
’The Great Central Fair,’ 7 invite co-operation with
them in the particular work for which iney have been
appointed. As no portion of the people are more patrio
tic than the working men and women of the country, It
is tint just and proper that tbey should alike have an op
portunity to contribute to the objects of the Fair. The
moat equable plan for accomplishing' this, and* at the
same time* the easiest one* is to ask ror the contribution
of a siagle day’s labor from all classes in the communi
ty. To reach every department or industry and art,
will be a work of great labor, but, if attained* will be
productive of immense results.. „ , ... .
The success of the plan will depend upon the hearty
co-operation of every element of influence within our
limits, and we invite all the guardians of the industrial
interests, and all others, to take hold with us in farther*
is* ibis great work of patriotism and humanity.
The committee is charged with the following duty,
First- To obtain the contribution of “one day’s labor,”
or earnings, from every artisan and laborer* foreman,
operative, and employee; president, cashier, teller, and
clerk of every Incorporated and unincorporated com*
Eany, railroad, and express company, employing firm,
auk, manufactoiy, iron works, oil works, mill*, mine,
and public office; from every private banker and broker,
importer, auctioneer* and merchant; clerk, agent, and
talesman; designer, finisher, and artist; publisher,
printer, and mechanic ; from every Government officer,
contractor, and employee; grocer, butcher, baker* and
dealer; farmer, horticulturist, and producer; from
everymantue maker, milliner, and female operative;
every individual engaged in turning the soil tending
the locm. or in any way earning a livelihood, or build
ing a fortune within the States of Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, and Delaware. ... t , , ,
Second. To obtain the contribution of one day’s
revenue” from all the great employing establishments,
flrn.e, corpora ions, companies, railroads, and works.
Third To obtain the contribution of one day’s income
from every retired person* and person of fortune—male
and female —living upon their means, and from all cler
gymen, lawyers, physicians, dentists, editors, authors,
and professors { and all other parsons engaged in the
learned or other professions. _ „, ,
Much of this work must be performed by the personal
influence and tfforis of ladies and gentlemen associated,
or to be associated, with the committee in carrying out
tb The Committee feel the responsibility of the work they
have undertaken, which, to be successful, will require
a vtiy perfect ramification of theii plan, and they there
fore call upon all earnest people to assemble themselves
together in every town, township, and county, and form
organizations of Jadies and gentlemen to co-operate with
them in this great work and labor of .love.. Inthema
nulactu'ing counties, the coal aad oil regions, and in
the agricultural districts— especially let there be organi
zations in the larger towns, so that the young people may
have an opportunity thus to render assistance to their
relatives and friends fighting the battles of their country
in the ai rules of the nation. . . , ,
The work of this committee may be prosecuted where
no other effort can be made for the fair* as in the mines -
cf the coal regions. A day’s earnings of the miners, and
a dby’s product of the mineß, can be obtained, where no
portable article could be procured for transportation.
Indeed, there is no part or section of thess States where
the day’s labor may not be obtained, if organizations can.
he Torn ed to reach them. ... . . '
The committee cannot close without urging upon all.
proprietors of establishments the duty of taking prompt
and energetic action to «eoure the benefit of .the day of
labor 110 m all within their control.
The Committee deem it unnecessary to do more than
thus to present the subject to the peopleof the tnree States
named. In the coming campaigns of our armies the
labors of the Sanitary Commission ” will be greatly
augmented. By the first of June 700.000 men —one of the
largest armies cf modern times—will be operating in the
field. So large a force, scattered orer regions to which
the men are unacclimated, must necessarily carry along
with tt a large amount of elct nees. Buffering, and death,
to tay nothing of the gathered horrors of the battle field.
These sufferings it Is our bounden duty, as men and
Cbrfst'am. to relieve. A. great and enlightened people,
enjoying the blessings of a Government of their own
making, cannut refuse asslstanca to men suffering to
maintain its authority, and we will not believe that the
great Central Fair* drawing its products from the three
States of Ptnntylvanla, Hew Jersey, and Delaware, sj
affluent in all mineral, agricultural, aud industrial
shall fall behind any similar effort which has
yet been made for ihe relief oftbe Nation’s children.
As it ie desirable not to multiply circulara, no further
authority than this circular will be necessary for any
employing firm or company» or any respectable corn
mitten of ladies and gentlemen to proceed at once in the
icork of this committee. . , , , . .
Subscriptions will re immediafitly acknowledged in
the newspapers of Philadelphia, and it i» very desirable
that tbey commence at once as each fresh ac^nowledg
msiit will stimulate further effort. „
All subscriptions should be Bddißßsed to JOHN vr.

Thb Wife's Secret. By Mrs. Ann S Stephens. Pub
lished by T. B. Petebpon A Brothers, Philadelphia.
We have read the advance sheets of Mrs. Ann S. Ste
phens' new book, "The Wife's Secret, "and can promise
her admiiers a characteristic treat. The story is one of
domestic life, the scene being laid mainly in the vicinity
of New York. The various persons who have their part
in the narrative are strongly pretented, particularly the
dlfl\ rent members of the Bently and Hart families. The
character of Michael Hurst is also described with almost
painful force. We will not weaken the Interest of any
readerby sketching the plot, but will eimply state th»t
no lover of the exciting in romance can fail to be eager to
unravel its intricacies after reading the first few pages.

MEXICAN MUSTANG LINIMENT.
The parties in St. Louis and Cincinnati, who have been
counterfeiting the Muatang Liniment, under pretence of
proprietorship, have been thoroughly estopped by the
courts. To guard against further imposition. I have pro
cured from the United States Treasury a private steel
plate revenue stamp, whioh ie placed over the top of
each bottle. Each stamp .bears th ofac simile of my sig
nature, and without which the article Is a counterfeit,
dangerous, and worthless imitation. Examine every
bottle. This Liniment has been in use and growing in
favor for many years. There hardly exists a hamlet on
the habitable globe that does not contain evidence of its
wonderful effects. It lithe best emollient in the world..
With its present improved ingredients, its effects upon
man and beast are perfectly remarkable. Sores are
healed, pains relieved, lives saved, valuable animals
made useful, and untold ills assuaged. For bruises,
sprains, rheumatism, swellings, bites,- cuts, caked
breasts, strained horses, Ac., it is a sovereign remedy
that should never, be dispensed with. It should be in
every family. Sold by all druggists.
