Buy thb “ Florence.”—We have heard of a
number of cares recently of persons selling the sew
ing machines which they were using, for the pur
pose of buying a “ Florence” instead, and some have
even given their machines away, in order to intro
duce into their families this most popular and pei>
feet of sewing machines. The ware-rooms of the
agent, No. 680 Chestnut street, continue almost m
ciowded with customers as they were durfDg Christ

table machines were sold for presents alone.

All a Muddle.—A reporter who had been taking
a drirlc onoe wrote: “ .Yesterday morning, at four

The Journal of Commerce gets off the following
piece of philosophy: “ A man in a- passion is feve?
trustworthy, whatever uay.be his moral principle.
Human nature unrestrained 18 notto berelieion,
either for truth or reason. Some men seem to be in
a chronic state of passion. They labor under ex
citement, either on one subject, or on all subjects at
the same time.” But we, free from this imputation,
would say, dispassionately and coolly, with the ther
mometer wheie it is, buy your winter clothing at
Charles Stokes & Co.’s ottc price clothing store,
under the Continental.
With Just Pride,
Of all men, we think the first place
Belongs to the Anglc-Ameiican race:
For a will to purine, undaunted by toils,
The object it seeks, nor at danger recoils;
For a mind at once active, inventive, and strong,
And a heart keenly quick to kindness or wrong;
For vigor of muscle, and strength of endurance,
Self-reliance, and courage, and manly assurance,
Our countrymen surp&sß all the rest of creation,
At d lead in the van- guard of civilization.
All hail to the North-men! long may they aspire
To wear Stokes* Clothing, which ail do admire—
To the magical figures their feet still incline,
