THE USION BENEVOLEHT AS'
ft O** SOOIATION—Tbe Poor and the Season —On be
half of the poor of the city the Map agera of the Union
Benevolent Association ate compelled to make a second
appeal for the season for funds It was hoped that \he
mildness of the winter and the activity of trade would
have made & second appeal unnecessary; hut the enor
mously incie>sed cost of every article of living, and es
pecially of fuel, has laid burdens upon, the poor which
calls for greater liberality towards them; and our trea •
swyis empty. Notwithstanding the apparent prospe
rity abroad there is an undercurrent of suffering which
is ourdntr to search ont and relieve. Thelabor of work
ing men is well remunerated; but that of poor sowing
women is not, except in special ca?eS. We know of tho* e
who, wording late and early, earn bat $2 per week; who
make common shirts for $1 25, and drawer** for $1 per
dozen. Men control their wages by banding together
and demanding an increase of pay. but there seems to be
no redress for women, who are wholly in the power of
their employers. When ltis asserted, therefore, that la
bor is abundant, &e., we point to this close of sufferers,
and ask for them and those dependent upon them the
sympathies of tb§ pubhc. The public Must be remind
ed, however, that it is not for those who are able to liCbor
that our clarity is intended, but for those who axe inca
pacitated by reason of sickness or infirmities, and upon
whom the high prices work an immense amount of suf
fering. Thisoiass ** we have always with us,” no mat
ter how mild the winter or favorable the times. They
are mostly women, often with families of small chil
dren. It costs them from $8 to $lO for a ton Of CO&l, Of
rather fits toon to twenty dollars, for they ara compelled
to buy it by the bask* t, at d ouble thecomm-;a price. Our
Society has one hundred and forty female visitors who
discover more of this kind of suffering than they hare
means to relieve, and It ia for them - that this appeal is
made. Onr whole receipts T»*money oer annum is not
overslo,Coo. iA similar society in New York receives
$70,C00.) More than naif of this is expanded for coal,
leaving less than $5.0001> be divided among one hundred
and forty ladies, making the annual sum for distribu
tion by each tw«uty fi?e dollars, or two dollars per
month. witMMsthe&e ladies relieved* last year, s.rao
families. They made 11,148 visits to the poor. They
found employment for 93!) poisons. They ministered to
791 sick. They sent to school 138 children- They dis
tributed 1.224 tons of coal, 1,477 garments, 300 stoves, and
kept 80 women in sewing for their store, besides a distri
bution of over $4,000 in money. This winter the demand
is greater and the receipts smaller. The Society, there
fore, makes this appeslforfurthfir aid, at the clo*.e of the
season, when suffering is alway a greatest. The collec
tors of the Society, Meser?. Cooper and Evxna, will make
an early call upon the citizens, and they are earnestly
commended to the attention of the charitable; or contri
butions may he sent to the Treasurer, Edmund Wilcox.

They are composed of tho celebrated Callsaya bark, wln
texgTeeu, sassafras, roots, herbs, &C;> all preserved' in

Persons of sedentary habits, troubled with weakness,
latitude, palpitation of the heart, la«k of appetite, dis
tress after eating, torpid liver, constipation &c., deserve
to suffer If they will not try them.
They are recommended by the highest medical autho

several persons are already in prison. See that every
bottle has our United States stamp over the cork, unmu
