Honorably Discharged.
The four colored persons, two men and two Iva
men, who were arraigned at the Central Station, a
phort time since, on the Charge of purioland WU"
colea from the dwelling of Mr. Sohn Livery, Lave
been honorably discharged. The defendants are
Walters by profession, and have stems* borne most
excellent charaetets. The few articles found In the
=74on of some of the parties, and which seemed
m the suspicion entertained by Mr. Livery,
were nlI isatisfactorily accounted for by the moat un
impeachable evidence. Hence the discharge of the
psi ties.
:altered National Bank Note.
Joshua Pritchett, the keeper of .how at Se
fton() and Winl9W atreets, was Arraigned at the Oen-
trial Station yesterday afternoon, on the charge of
visaing upon Mr. W. J. Barrett a bogus to note,
altered from a genuine one, issued by the National
Bank, Patterson, New Jersey .
Officer George Hatt teatifled that on Tuesday
tight, ks he was going off his beat, he Stopped at
the Bed Lion Hotel; the defendant showed him a
note, and asked his opinion about it Witness re•
plied-that he thought it goon ; defendant said he did
not think it was good. Alter this defendant tried
to get the note changed at fdr.Franka , auction store;
be then celled upon - Mr. Barrett, and said he would
like to have the note chime. d, as he did not want to
lose the sale of a dollar , / worth of tickets.
blr. Barrett was examined, and testified that he
changed the note for defendant; it is a one dol
lar good note altered to a ten.
Officer Hart, on being recalled, stated that several
of these notes have been passed up town within a
day or two.
The defendant said that he knew the man from
'whom be obtained the note. The ease went over for
ev.other healing, to take place on the 26th inst.
Meters Mr. U. S Commissioner Smith.]
Resisting a Deputy Marshal
Joseph Keller, ol Northampton county, was ar
raigned seaterday afternoon on a charge of resisting
a deputy U. S. marshal and reecutog a prisoner from
him sometime since in that county. The marshal
had arrested a man for deserting the army service of
the U. S. Government. It is alleged that the de
fendant placed a pistol at the head of toe officer, and
thus rescued We prisoner, who was, however, sub.
sequent/y arrested, and sent back to the army. The
ease Went over until February 11th for a final
bearing.
'louse of Correction Wanted
The only cases at the Union street station-house,
yesterday Morning, brought to the notice of Police
Magistrate White, were v.scrants, a small group of
dissipated human Mr gm upon whom ruin and conse
quent exposure had made their marks. Oases such
as these are brought to public notice almost daily.
The vagrants are sent to prison for thirty days, but
every now and then they are let out, again to re
turn to wallowing in the mire of d iisipation. The
Vagrant business, as it may be cal ed, and as it has
keen practised far years, is conducted upon the prin
ciple of "Rep, hop, keep the null *going." These
vagrants come in tor a share of charity-soup as well
as more worthy poor people, and the few pennies
they get they spend for a villainous compound called
Whisky. Reformation has been tried over - and over
again upon-this class of miserable human beings,
but all to no effect- They are past human redemp
tion. Why should they be permitted to wander
about the streets like a pestilence, tainting the
public morality?
There should be a House of Correction for such
persons, where they should be made to work to
maintain themselves. Such an institution could
be made aelt.suataining. The miserable vagrants
should be put to as hard labor as i. consistent with
justice end humanity. Some people entertain an
Idea that a House of Correction should be erected
on the principle of the BlockleF Almshouse,
ilvhere thousands of loafing paupers are fed at the
public expense—where evert in the shape of
food must be of the best quality. A convenient in
eminent called a treadmill, by which grain could
be ground into meal or flour, should be considered
the fundamental principle upoa which to base a
Merciful House of Correction.
The. Custom Howse Robbery.
The recent robbery of gold. at the custom house,
Was A daring piece Of . pilhtiny. The mystery con
nected with ft has not yet been solved, and the great
pebability Is, never will be, this B,de of the eternal
tat or justice. The Government, of course, will
loan nothing by the transaction. as it holds the Oal
/ector responsible, as the custodian of the minima
house revenue• he Will make the amount up, but
at his own less.
Shoplifters Arrested.
Two mulatto girls, named Biuna Deitz and
orgeanne Christian, were arrested last evening,
after a hard chase, by Officer Ltd don, Second Police
district, for shoplifting. They bad taken a dress
pattern from the store of Dirs. Mary West, in the
neighborhood or Severnlt and South, and dropped
it during the race. They had, a number of pawn
tickets in their possession; also, a new watch, with
chain, key, and ball attached. probably the property
of a soldier. Any storekeepers along South street
who have lost goods by such thieving may have a
chance to see the arrested parties, at the Central
Station, at .2 o'clock this afternoon.
Burglary and Arrest.
• •
The house of Isaac S. Bor sell, No.. 146 south
Ninth street, was burglarously entered on the night
Of the lath, er morning of the leth inst., and a variety
of clothing, teats, shawls, undez-clothing, and about
sixty or seventy dollars in money stolen. The en
trance was effected by forcing open a rear window.
An old military Cap was left on the premises by the
Thieves. tieo. Cooper, alias Batty, and Hugh Kelly,
alias Club-foot, both wellknown thieves, were ar
rested yesterday, and enough of the property re
covered to fasten the burglary on the arrested par
ties, who were secured by Officers Keyser and Kf.ax
well, of the Second Police district. A hearing will
be held at the Central Station to-day, at 2 P. X.
