This volume containsa desirable selection of more than
one-third of the plates of the former edition, and these
are furnished at one-half the price at which thei same'
potiion of plates was then sold.
This edition was issued under the personal superin
tendence of his son, "the late John W. Audubon, and
every plate colored from the original drawings, still in
possession of the .'amity.
The principal reason why this volume cin be sold at
the present reduced price is,-that no account has been
made of the expense of the original copper plates, which
for the work was over one hundred thousand dollars, but
;ohthe simple cost of manufacturing, and a small profit
only has been added to the cost thus estimated. Further,
the volume was completed before the great advance in
paper, coloring, and binding; if manufactured now It*
could not be sold but at a very large advance on the pre
sent prices. ;

Of the typographical appearance of the work it is .only"
necessary to say that it is from Houghton's press, River
side, printed on tinted paper. The illustrations are from'
Harley’s unequalled pencils A Christmas Carol, The-
Chimes, The Cricket on the-*Hearth, The Battle of Life;
The Haunted Man, and A Christmas Tree, are the tales
that are included in the volume, and of. them and their
merits it is needless to speak. There is a short preface
from Dickens’ own pep, which-nobody should neglect to
read, and which sets fortlrabnndantly the.purpose of ‘
his etories. Altogether, will make a most ap
