NOTICE-To Philadelphia- Bankers tfnd all other per
sons who have purchased t'afes from those New York
humbugs who advertise that they are the o aly firm 1 that
can nssbe safes that will stand firo.and cannot be drilled,
bored. Mown open.wilh powder, nor robbed in any man
ner. Woeay to yon that there is not one of your great
Patent BefeS, or this make, you'now have in use, that
cannot be drllledand blown open in the samo manner as
below / . .
If you, the above purchasers, will appoint a committee
of throe, who will go to Troy, New York, and ascertain*
how many more than twenty of these Lilli*’s greit Safes
were destroyed, and thei.r contents entirely burned up,
by tb’e late destructive fire in that place, we will pay all
the expense of tlieir joarney.
Pitaseread the following, taken from" the Record of
the JYwies, of November ISth: . _
‘‘Bank BounF.n.— I The banking office of W. Gh Ster
ling, Eeq., a'few doors from'tbis office, was entered on
Friday morning, and a largeburglarand fire-proof Safe,
of Lillie's paxontj blown open. The event attracted a
crowd as soon as it was discovered, thenews spreading
like wildfire. Mr. sterling was at work there till after
eleven on Thursday evening. After that hour the bur
glars ontered and drilled through the chilled door, filled,
the lock with powder, and blew it open. ”
All this was done in less than four hours, and these
are the great chilled iron safes which, the makers have
been saying cannot be drilled.

Messrs. Evans & Watson— OerUlemen: On. the 16th

Safes,” which was entered 'by m’eans of a hole being
drilled through the door into the lock, and the door
blown to pieces with powder. The safe door was split
across its face, and completely destroyed.
I understand from Mr. Sterling'that the safe was of

December 11, 1862.
Messrs. Evans & Watson,’ Philadelphia— Gentlemen:
I wont to Lock Haven yesterday. Among the different
fire-proofs which had passed through the great fire, I
found three or four of your safes, which had preserved
the books, papers, &c., in a perfect condition, bearing
not the least mark of the great conflagration.
Messrs. Boggle & Beadle had in their store one of
Lillie’s make of safes, which was burned up i send
you by express part of thb charred remains of the wood
work. Teiy respectfully yours,
dell-3tif C. D. EMERY.

Blown upon—Still not An-ni.-hi-la.-ted.
To-the Publisher of The Press :—i notlcelan article in
your paper of the 10th inst., headed “Lillie’s Patent
Safe Blown. Open,” &c. , and as yon have published this
■article, I ask the same privilege to reply.
First. I will sayto Evans* Watson that whenever
they will come oat over their own signature, and state
. that they or their agent can drill any of Lillie's Safes in
any way practical fora burglar, ana will backup their
statement with any respectable sum, in case of failure, I
am ready and willing to meet them with likeiumin
case of success, with the single condition, that if suc
cessful the name amount shall be pledged by both par
ties, that if I drill, or cause to be drilled, one of their
Safes of similar cost and size, in one-half the time, the
forfeiture is mine; if not, theirs.
Second Whenever they are ready to taio anybank or
mercantile Safe they now have tn use, and put the same
against one of mine of similar cost and size now in use.
and submit them to any practical burglar test, I will
give them one-third advantage in. time, each party
pledging a respectable sum, to be forfeited by the party
unsuccessful. As to fire, they may select any of my
medium size Fire and Burglar Proof Safes sold in Phila
delphia within the last three years, and I will select one
of their Safes of similar size and cost, sold within the
same time, and they shall be put in a furnace together,
and fairly tested upon the-same terms as heretofore men
tioned. Ab to an investigation of the Trey fire, if they
will allow Mayor Henry to appoint a committee to visit
Troy and make a report as to how my Safes stood that
fire, I will pay their expenses, provided they will pub
lish tteiT report in two of the leading papers in Phila
delphia, one month, at their expense.
I make these offers, gentlemen, that you may have the
opportunity to place your Safes fairly before the public,
.in contrast with the “New York humbugs, 7 ' thereby
saving the necessity of publishing vague inuendoes, in
. ferences without any foundation in fact, and statements
utterly untrue •
And now, with a few questions I am done.
When Pennock & Co J s Safe, of 'your make, costing
$3OO, was broken open at Wilmington, Del., with an old
axe and small bar, and Sl.tOO taken, and you gave them,
in place, a large Bank Safe, how was that affair settled?
What did you give besides?
When your-Sa'e was blown open at Allentown, and
robbed, how did you settle that affair?
When y our $203 Safe was broken op an by a hammer
and bar, at Mount Joy, and robbed of s*.oo, how did you
fix up that matter with Mr. John Patterson, the owner?
When the Beading Railroad lost near sll, ooofrom one
of your Safes, it being left alone for about a half hour,
before nine o’clock P. M-, with both keys in possession
of Mr. Potts, the principal, who was away, what re
dress did you make? And how have you arranged with
Judge Jordan, of Sunbury, who was robbed a few days
since of $1,200, by having forty to fiftv holes drilled in
one of vour Safes, in front of the lock, the steel plate
broken, and the lock laid bare, besides many other
cases that might be enumerated ? • ' x -
As to the Lock Haven fire, why did you first publish
Mr. Emery’s (the son-in-law of Mr Evans) letter, say
ingthathe forwarded one of your certificates, and ex
pected two more the next day ? If obtained , why were
they notpubJifhed? Wa3not this Safe forwhich you
got this certificate on the walk or street, and not in any
building when the fire occurred, and owned by a law
yer ? Did not the watches actually melt together in. one
of your three Safes ? and was not anotherof the three so
badly damaged the certificate could not he obtained?
: Please answer. ;
Gentlemen, the noble precept presented to the publi
cans and sinners in ancient times—“ Let Mm that is
not guilty cast the first stone,'” is a rule .quite applica
ble. I think, in this case, and equally so is the latter
eaying,—“Those who live in glass houses'should not
throw stones. ”
