& Busy Scene.—The ebb and flow of

and the intelligence and discrimination of our
people. Their aalea, we learned last evening,
during yesterday were very large, and aa a great
proportion of the maohinea told were deaigned for
Present* for the ensuing holidays, we have reaeon
to believe that our advloe to purchasers, to “ get the
best," ia being generally adopted. Besides offering
to the publto a machine that has been acknowledged
aa the beat by the foremoat judgea all over the
world, the Grover k Baker Company this season
took' the wise precaution of presenting a stock of
their maohinea of suoh elegance, variety, and mag
nitude as to be able to supply the entire demaud of
the city, If necessary; and in order to still more en
title themselves to the confidence and gratltudo of
the public, they have made several Important re.
duotlonsln the prices of their instruments. This
machine is so simple in meohanism that for it to
get out of order from use Is next to impossible, and
ao easily kept in motion that a small child can
operate It. The fact Is, it Is the machino for popular
family use, and the great demand for it is therefore
natural.
The True Policy, in Buying Holiday
PnxsßKTa, as In everything else, is"to buy suoh
things as will give the most satisfaction; and let us
ask, In this connection, Who ever heard a single
complaint uttered against the famous Wheeler k
Wilson Sewing Maohlne, sold at the popular brown
atone establishment, 704 Chestnut street 1 No one,
■unless It was the complaint of an aspiring com
petitor. The world, in faot, has issued its verdict on
the Sewing-Machine question, and we can Imagine
no greater folly at this late day than people spend
ing their money for risky machines, when the same
amount would procure them a Wheeler £c Wilson.
The agent is now selling enqrmous quantities of
these instruments for Holiday Presents, and the cry
at 704 is “ still they come !’*
Fine Pictures of Everett, by Gutk-
Euhst.—We bad yesterday the pleasure of examin
ing the capital new pictures of Hon. Edward
'Everett, just taken by F. Gutekunst, at his Photo
• graphio gallery, 704 and 706 Arch street. The impe
rial of Mr. Everett is the most life-like and charac
teristic picture of that finished orator and statesman
that has ever been published, and deserves a place
in every parlor and library in the land. The cartes

almost most excellent, and may all be had at Ur,
G.’s counters, together with a line assortment of
Photograph Albums, at low prices.
Immense Stock of Gentlemen’s WRAr-
SBES.—Mr. John C. Arrison, Nos. 1 and 3 North
Sixth street, first stores above Market, has been
preparing for some weeks past to offer the largest,
most elegant, and in all respects the most desirable
ktoek of Gentlemen’s Wrappers in the United States,
and the fruits of his enterprise are now visible at
his store in the form of a princely stock ot these
graoeful garments, than which nothing could be
more appropriate or acceptable as a present for a
gentleman." He is already selling hundreds of them
for that purpose.
Attractive Stock of Holiday Goods.
—From the card, in another column, of Mr. John M.
Finn, southeast corner Arch and Seventh streets,
it will be seen that Ms stock possesses unusual at
tractions for buyers of holiday presents. In a casual
glance at his display yesterday, we were struck par
ticularly with this feature of It. While the articles
he offers are neither of them costly, they are, never
theless, of that ornamental, useful, and acceptable
Glass that always puts common-sense buyers at their
esse. We would direct special attention to-day to
his assortment of Fancy Colognes, elegant quality
ateel-mounted Morocco Satchels; also, a less ex
pensive article, suitable for girls’ dinner Batcheln,
fine Brushes, Pocket Books, Hand-mirrors, &c. Mr.
Finn’s establishment has become a great favorite
With the shopping public.
The Great Sewing " Machine Oil.—
From information that we have received from the
most reliable sources, we are warranted in-saying
that the celebrated Sewing Machine Oil, sold by
Messrs. Hulburt k Co., 240 Arch street (who are the
sole agents for its sale in this market), is the best
artiole for sewing maohlne purposes that has ever
been introduced. The oil is put up In neat bottles for
family use, an d hundreds ofladies who have tried It re
commend their friends to do so, as nn other answers
the purpose so satisfactorily in all respects. Messrs.
Hulburt k Co.’s Signal OH for light houses, Bteam
bouts, and other purposes are also rapidly taking
precedence over all others.
Hobs® Organized.— The prompt
manner In whloh our law-makers at Washington
have got to work this season is gratifying, as it will
save time, and saving either time or money is a
Virtue. It is for this reason mainly that we advise
everybody in want of Goal to patronize the cele
brated yard of W. W. Alter, 935 North Ninth street,
as he sells the best Goal, and the most of it for the
money, of any coal dealer in the eity.
Fresh Etock of Pretty Goods.—The
Jtopular house of George Grant, No, 610 Chestnut
Street, presents the finest display of fashionable
Scarffe, and every description of Gentlemen’s Fur
nishing Goods, suitable for presents. Here, too,
are made and sold the best-fitting Shirts in the
World, out by the most skilful man in his profession
in this city, Mr. John F. Taggart.
The Season and its Wants.—Messrs.
O. Somers A Son, No. 635 Chestnut street, under
Jayne’s Hall, are better prepared than any other
Clothing house in town to fit out gentlemen in ele
gant .neat suits at the shortest notice. Their stook
of ready-made garments is rich and varied, and their
fine work, to order, is always made up with the ut
most promptness. Prices moderate.
Messrs. Wood & Cary, 725 Chestnut
street, now display an immense stook of Velvet,
Leather, JFelten, Silk, and Fancy|Bonnets, which
they are selling at nearly cost.
Fresh Euitly of Silver Flint Buck
wheat.—Messrs. Davis & Richards, Arch and
Tenth streets, have just received a fresh supply of
the celebrated “ SilverFiint ” Buckwheat, the best
in the world.
Trimmed Ladies, Misses, and
Children ; White Felt, Silk, Spanish, Eydal, Velvet,
and others, now selling at the lowest prices, by Wood
& Cary, 335 Chestnut street.
Messrs. Davis & Richards, Arch and
Tenth streets, have just received a rreah supply of
Trout Spring Butter, a very superior article.

Steinways
PIANOS.
The fame of these instruments has extended to every
»art of Europe. We find on the programme of the Phil
harmonic Concerts in Bremen and Brunswick a note
stating that the grand piano fortes used were 4 4 from the
manufactory of Messrs. Steinway & Sons, New York.”
We also see by a London paper, noticing the fact of
Willie Pape playing before the Prince and Princess of
Wales during the bridal festivities, that “the piano
used at the castle was one of Steinway & Sons’, New
Fork, which took the prize medal at the World’s Fair."

ERNEST LINWOOD f
BY MRS. CAROLINE LEE HENTZ,
AUTHOR OF “LESDA,” “MARCUS GARLAND.'*
“ROBERT GRAHAM," “THE PLANTER’S
NORTHERN BRIDE," “RENA," Etc.
“We have seldom been more oharmed by the perusal
of anovel; and we desire to commend it to our readers
in the etrongest words of praise that our vocabulary
affords. The incidents are well varied ; the scenes
beautifully described, and the interest admirably kept
up. But the moral of the booh is its highest merit.
* Emeßt Lin wood ’ should be as welcome aB the dove of
peace to every fireside in the Onion. Itcannpt be read
without a moistening of the eyas, a softening of the
heart, and a mitigation of unchristian prejudices."
