has rarely been known'ln the literary woyid.
11? PARIS. •
Where it has just made its appearance, the excitement
is supreme.
The French correspondent of the New York Tribum
says: “The ordinary dog-day calm in literature is bro
ken, this season by the storm that rages about Renan’s
Viede Jesus. The book is*hardly two months out.of
the press, and if the booksellers’advertisement is credi

of it are already sold. It has-in its favor, with the ge

poetic, though firmly, critically chastened sentiment.
It is learned, deeply religious, fitter! j clear from skepti
cal sneer and polemic violence. •

■JTIE GREAT SENSATION NOVEL.
PECULIAR,
By EFES SARGENT, is meeting with an enormous sale,
and no wonder; for, as a specimen of what readers of
judgment think, we quote from the Roxbxtry Journal ,
which says: “The story is intenaely interesting as a
picture of our own times; it Is surpassingly vigorous in
its grasp, and graphic in its detail Of all works of fic
tion, written with a moral purpose,we scarcely know of
one which excels' it in these qualities. As a story. it
holds the reader as by a spell. As an argument, we
can conceive of nothing more cogent than its vivid and
picturesque pages. This is strong praise, hut does not
overstate the facts.” ‘ ,

“We take especial pleasure in commending this ear

The Boston Transcript says:
“ Though ‘ Nemesis’ le a stout l2mo. of about five hun
