AN ATTRACTIVE FEATtiRiI OF THE HOB-
TiOuvrtritAL DISPLAY As' TSE ACADEMY. —Tn
availing ourselves of the opportunity affthdpii last
evening of an advance glimpse of the Horticultural
:Exhibition at the Academy of Music, we found no
thing inihe entire display (which is certainly one of
- themost creditable ever given in this city) that at
-traded more attention or °Hermit more praise from
- the throng of visitors, than the array of tine fresh
:rruits by Messrs. Hertel]. and Letchworth, of North
- Fifth street, in their admirable Alb.llass Jars.
These gentlemen, have not only 08.nonstrated the
great superiority, of glass jars over metallic cans for
preserving fruity but they are giving to the public
what is unquestionably the beet Ws 15 jar ever in.
'vented, both for efficiency and convenience. Their
jar is in fact so much superior to all others in use for
preserving their contents in perfect freshness for any
required length of time, that the 'British Colonial
• Government adopted them in which to send the
perishable products of the Colonies to the great
:Exhibition in London last year, where they re
• eeived from the Judges the distinpished aeknoteledg
.2nent of a first award. Messrs. liArtell and Letoh
' worth also make a beautiful display of American
:and French Glass Shades, which, being shown in
• connection with the elegant apecimens of flowers
„and fruits, which they cover, are also greatly ad.
mired. From the encomiums pronounced by ladles
.and gentlemen in our hearing, upon this tasteful
feature of the exhibition, Messrs. H. ar. L. may con
:eider their contribution a success.. 'Very many ex
:,:pretesed a desire to order the jars on the spot, and as
"their proprietors have determined to aacpmmodate
•The public in this way, we have no dou,lat that large
'orders will be received by them during the two days
.of the exhibition.
ORN'AIUENT AND UTILITY COMBINED.—
.. She progress of civilization was never more emphs.-
Ideally signalized in the history of the' world than it
was lathe introduction of Wall Papers. Aaa beau
tifier of the residence, it has a charm almost magi
transforming dreary blank walls into panels of
light, beauty, and cheerfulness, that are no Yess con-
Aduoive,to health life and than they are gratifying to
a refined taste. We were the more forcibly reminded
, of the great progress made -in this branch of the de
corative arts by a visit .yesterday to the popular
lold Paper-banging Establishment of Caesars. Howell
Bourke, on the northeast corner of Fourth and
Market streets. Being among the largest manufac
turers and importers of, and dealers in, Paper 'Hang
ings, Window.curtain Papers, and all kinds of deco
'ratty° Wall Papers this city, their stock uni
formly presents a .variety. of novelties and attrac
tions not found elsewhere; and, being very exten;
Ssively engaged in the 'business, their prices are re-
Inarkably reasonable. We cheerfully recommend
our readers throughout the arty and country to pay
this establishment a visit for whatever they may
.need in this department of trade.
EXTENSIVE YARN AND WOODEN WARE
Z§TAISLIBIIMENT.—Whitever may be said of trsde
In general, it is an undeniable fact that in at least
tine department of trade and manufactures Phila.
eilelphia is without a rival, either in this 'Country or
abroad. We alldue to the manufacture of and trade
in Yarns, Batts, Carpet Chains, Wooden Ware,
Brushes, and that class of goods generally. Of the
Louses that have made for themselves a reputation
in this department, we have to name, this morning,
that of Messrs: J. H. Coyle & Co., whose card will
be found in another part of our paper. This honse
mow presents a very , large and complete stock in this
line, embracipg a variety of' desirable novelties pc-,
culler to their own warerooms. A. visit to their
store, No. 310 Market street, yesterday, convinced
Us that for everything that merchants now in thin
mity, making their fall purchases, may want, they
ican , hardly fail of being nuited.at J. R. Coyle & Co.'s;
and upon examination we discovered that their
prices, which are decidedly moderate, are no less as
attraction to shrewd buyers than the fine character
of their stock. ,
THE DRY GOODS TRADE.—The dry goods
jobbing trade, if we may judge from the present ac
tivity of some of the leading houses engaged in it,
Was never in a more flourishing condition in Phila.
rdelphia than at the present time. On Market street,
the old and respectable house of Messrs. ET.OOd, Bon.
bright, & Co., at No. 435, presented such a bee-hive
scene yesterday as we have seldom witnessed in
any business establishment. These large wholesale
dealers in Foreign and Domestic Dry. Goode, with
ommendable mercantile sagacity, prepared them.
pelves for-an unusually active fall trade by providing
themselves with-one of the largest and best. assorted
Stooks in the country, both of a Fancy and Staple
character, and the result is•that, for some weeks
past, they have been - literally inundated with
from all accessible parts of the Union, a very large
propoirtion of whom4sre buying freely for cash. Mer
chants will flnd it to their advantage to visit this
/muse before making their putchasea.

ELEGANT STOCII OF FALL CLOTHING.—
Messrs. C. Somers .& Son, the well-known importers
of cloth goods, and manufacturers of floe. Clothing,
No. 626 Chestnut street, under Jayne's hall, are
,now charming their customers and tht publidin ge.
Dual, with their elegant new styles of garments
made from the choiceat new materials, selected with
the utmealt regard to the taste of our citizens. We
recommend this stook as one of the finest and most
attractive to purchasers of clothing, either at whole.

AUNT PATSY.—
BY THE BARD OF i . OWSR HALL. . •
I had an aunt, a nice old dfane.

Full many an onecdote she told.
And all her tales were good as gold; •
But, eta ange to say, whate'eimight °bailee •
To be the theme of her romance.
The subject, as she turned round,

And then disconsolately died.
When she of Charlemagne would swab'.

The Committee congratulates the friends of the Onion
throughout the State on the glorious greeting KLINE
sends to us to-day, and ventures to express the hope
that it will prove at oriels an Incentive to generous rival

awaits ns in October.
To make that victory decisive. our great need now Is
local organization and local effort ; and wherever two
or three are gathered toge.her In the name of LIBERTY
AND THE UNION, we beg them to direct their labors
by township meetinge, by circulation of documents,
and by all the proper agencies of an active and thorough

falsehoods which the enemies of the Government are
busily towing in the agricultural regions, In the rural

California, Kentucky, and Maine hive pronounced the
doom of all Northern By rapathizereveith treason ;'and'
when Ohio and Pennsylvania shall have decisively re

We are exceedingly obliged to the Richmond Whfg for
