NEE PRICE OF SulisTrrunEs.7—There are
•yet a great many men "in the market,'llwaiting for
favorable opportunities to relieve unwilling con
scripts at higher prices than the latter feel disposed
'to give. Two hundred and fifty dollars, to two hum.
•dred and eighty, is the range of figures demanded by
substitutes. The drafted, however, are begin6ng
to find out that at that rate a substitute is mob.?
costly than the full exemption fee which the Go
' Vernment requires. The medical examination is so
-lariat, that few of the men known as substitutes can
palm the ordeal.. They entail an expense, however,
• on the principal, who; after three or four ineffectual
attempts to procure a suitable person, gives up the
chase in despair. The consequence is, that of
those able-bodied eonscripts who do not_thenwelves
go to the war, the majority are now paying the
.$3OO, rather than looking for substitutes.

States District Court—Judge Cad
, walader.
The hearing on habeas corpus, in the case of Lane,
a drafted man from the Fourth district, which was
to have come 'up on Saturday. at 12 o'clock, was
postponed for the present. The Board of Enrolment
for that &stria; in their return , to the writ, set
forth that they had not yet finally decided upon the
evidence before them, auto the age of the relator.
Counsel for the relator then asked that the matter
be permited to rest for the present without quash
ing the writ, until this final decision is made. This
was allowed..
ridatri of Oyer and Terminer and Quarter
Seindons—Judge Ludlow.
- The most of Saturday's session was occupied with
the hearing of writs of habeas corpus in the cases
of enlisted minors. The recruiting officers in this
city persist in furnishing the court with its entire
Saturday business, almost, by enlisting boys from
twelve to eighteen years of age, whose parents im
mediately sue out writs of habeas corpus for their
discharge.

cakes, candles, spruce-beer, &c. The 1,: - .ree dollars,
„ thoughemall, was a heavy loss to her. '.. .
'The boy, who was only about ten years of .:f e,
'was known to have been in the practice of sticking ,
a small hook into a watermelon, a cantelope, and by
means of a string pull it to him when an opportunity
should offer. But robbing the till outright he de
nied in the most positive manner, and insisted on
his innocence.
Seated in the private room after the hearing, De
tective Russell, knowing that important arrests had
teen made from'various hints thrown out by lads
similarly circumstanced, had a private interview
with the youth in question.
"You know you stole that money," said he.
- "I didn't do no such thing," replied the lad.
"Come, come, my son, you'll die in prison yet;
sou are on the bad road that leads some people to
the gallows. That woman is fretting herself to
death about the loss of that money." _
"I don't care. I can't help it. I clidn'etake it,"
Still continued the boy. •
"Suppose she'd die, don't you think that your
.conscience would chide you 7 Youirnow you stole
a watermelon from her."
"Well, that wasn't money, was it 7"
"No, but it was a beginning. Now, come tell us
all about it. How much did you give Jimmy?
"I didn't give him nothing; I didn't take the
money, I tell you," still persisted the boy.
The conversation was kept up for an hour. To
all the questions propounded by the shrewd officer,
the lad seemed to have a ready answer. He was
smart. He did not look like a bad boy. He was
rather more intelligent .than the ordinary run of
'thieving youth. -
The officer finally operated so much upon the lad's
feelings that, after a deal of trouble, the boy burst
Into tears and acknowledged the charge. .He had
not only stolen the money, as charged against him,
but had purloined other sums, which he hid in a
board yard up town. The officer being tithe on the
track, the money was recovered and restored to the
, loser.
The boy was fully penitent under the suggestions
of the officer, and promised reform, He fulfilled
that promise well, and rose to something. like dis
tinction. He became a Sundapschool teacher, and
come time after the present rebellion broke out, en
tered the volunteer corps, and fought his way up to
some promotion.
A short time since, a good.looking soldier, with
arm in a sling, entered the Continental. After walk
ing about that palatial establishment for sometime,
he observed Mr. Russell, who looks pretty much the
game now as he did twenty years ago. The soldier
officer stepped up to him with extended hand, and
casually remarked, "I guess you donl recognize me,
sir; you are Mr. Russell, are you nott -
" I am, sir," said William: respectfully, at the
game time gazing at the stranger thoughtfully.
It was not long before they mutually unfferstood
each other, and had a long conversation. The eel
-dier of the present was, nearly twenty years since,
the boy who "booked" a watermelon as his first
offence, and then helped himself to the contents of a
'till. He is now a highly-honorable man, and admits
'that the kindness of Officer Russell made such an im
pression on his youthful mind that he has never for
gotten it. This little narrative is not without its
moral; some of the detective officers of the present
clay may apply it with beneficial results.

A Novel.
HELEN MODET. ,
1 vol., 12mo, cloth. *LW,
leais very cleverly written story, abotinding in
incidents end spirited dialogues. The plot is
Al conceived, and the characters are wall drawn. The
_nterest of the story is maintained throughout the book.
We prediot for this book an extensive sale and deserved
Popularity."—llfissouri. Republican.
The characters are drawn with grace and some power;
and the scenes sketched with skill and pleasantness.
The moral tone of the tale Is high; and the lesson incul
cated worth the attention even of those who read new
novels for the sake of the story. "— Troll Whip.
"It is a pleasant novel, graphic and readable—a story
of modern life and quiet scenes. "—Trey Times.
• • The writer has evidently seen much of the world - in
its various phases; and presents a life-like representa
tion of society as we find it, especially of the better
clash. "—Portland Press. •
' The tale is well told, teaches a good moral, and ex
hibits a variety of well-drawn characters. Constance
Langdon is lovely inough to captivate the heart of the
most crusty bachelor, and the good pnrpose to which
- she turned her power in winning Hamilton from his in
fidel views only increases admiration for her."—Egatern.
