He was a noble and brave soldier, and had distin guished himself by many deeds of valor, for which he was promoted from the ranks to a sergeantoy. He was of a large, muscular frame, perhaps the largest man of his regiment, and much beloved, by all who knew him, for his kindness and urbanity of manners.
