In calling the attention of the public to this affair on
BLACK PARAFFINB VARNISH,
the £rtibsoribere have only time to say , that it is very in
teresting to those interested, and unworthy the attention
of anybody else, further than it being the refutation of
a lie over the signature of George S. Page & Bro., Eastern
Varnish Peddlers; simply, because they object to-our.
manufacturing and selling a Varnish in Philadelphia, in
every way superior, for one-half the money than their
so-called Patent Pentane Varnish. Any one preferring
Pages' to ours can buy it of us, with " sworn bids,"
and half dozen other parties in town, without putting
.us to expense; 25 cents alderman:fees. • •
di the trade of Philadelphia, who have so liberally
patronized ns since January last, have been• thoroughly
aware of what they were buying, it is not supposed that
they will be led by "Page's Appeal" to pay extra
price, extra freight, extra cartage, • extra package
nioney, for an article in New York , when they can buy
the Q. P. IRON BRILTHANT at home, at less purchase
money, without these charges, a better quality, any
more than a painter would pay for turpentine; at its pre
-sent price, when benzine answers his purpose. Persons
wanting Page's Varnish, residing in distant portions
of the city, can be furnished with the names of parties
selling it in their locality, free of charge, by applying

NEW GREET MUSIC)
SONGS JUST PUBLISHED BY'
ROOT & CADY, CHICAGO
We intend to publish only pieces that have some dis
tinctive merit, (and we think we have unusual facilities
for judging of these things ) but notwithstanding our
care, there aro occasionally those that go into retire
ent-upon .
our shelves, not seeming to '
in take," as the
phrase Is. In view of these things, we propose to give
all our new publications a chance, by stating fairly to
our patrons and the public what they are, and then
leave them to find their level. After that, we advertise
only those that have proved themselves attractive, popu
lar, and nicht'.
"Song of a Thou sand Years,
solo and - Chu rus. Illustrated "
Title. Words and music
by Ilaaicv C WORN. Price 2d cents. '
We have high hopes of this song. it is in a noble style,
depicting the future of our nation in a way that strength-
ens our h ,pes and fills no with new resolves. The solo
is adapted to voices of medium range, and the chorus to
mixed or men's voices, as may be convenient. If eung
by the latter, let the alto be an octave higher, excepting
in the unison passages.
A Battle Scene. Words by R. Tom - cows. ?Amin by
GEORGIS R. ROOT. Price MI cents.
To perpetuate the glory of the brave-men of the 19th
Illinois, and their companions in arms who fell at Mur
freesboro. " This is a vivid description of the brilliant
charge of the 19th, in response to General Negley's
W h o'll save the ]eft?" in that memorable fight. We
say confidently, that singers who have energetic voices
and good descriptive and declamatory power will pro
duce great effect with this song.
A four-part Song, with' action—as sung by Father
Kemp's Old Folks. Arranged by B. F. Rix. Price 35
cents.
We have never heard any humorous concert piece so
successful as this. It is descriptive of the playing of
several instruments, one after the other, sung to a very
pleasant quail, and accompanied by appropriate move
rnentF. We think it will he one of the finest things for
schools (especially of boys) that ever was got up. Full
directions are printed in the Song.
"Hine is the Mourning I-!eayt.".
A Duet for Soprano and Tenor.
TER. Price 25 cents. -
A charming composition of this remarkable melodist.
It seems to us, the best of his that we have 80011 for a long
time.
".The Days when We were Young."
Sang. Words and 'Music by HENRY C. WORK. Price
25 cents.
We touch a tender chord its man's heart when we sing
of his childhood—of his former playznates, Am —and it
does a person good to look baek occasionally. through the
medium of such a song as this, to the days gone by The
name of-the author of this song is a guarantee that it
Poseesses merit."
An old Highland Song. thronged with Chorus, by
GEORGE F. ROOT. Price 2.5 cents.
We think this a beautiful Scotch melody, and an• un
commonly brilliant chorus. The words may be often ap
propriate in these days, referring to our returningheroes,
