The occasion*: of disposing of a portiou of the Woodland street front aro those r Tbero have never beau any taxes imposed on lotbulders in the cemetery, aud it is not de sired,at any time,to impose them. There is a bond debt (no lien on-.tbe cemetery j, yet unpaid, of about $i%l)l)0, for the costly granite entrance, erected sinco mo-t of the lots were sold, and for other improvement-,aud towards which thelotholders contributed uolniug, which debt it is desirable to have dhehargod. Owing to the rapid pro gress of the city westward, pipes have been laid for the water on Woodlaud street, aud curbing, street paving, . and.foot paviug mnstsoou follow, the charges for which would.be li* ns on the cemetery, *nd on two thousand feet front would atoll to a ini ge amount, it is very de sirable, and is Uie*purpoi>o of. the managers, to mike a secure and enclosure of stouo ou tho other throe Sides of the cpinotcry—au object of large cost, aud Which every bitholcler would liko to see iccotnplished. 4 The purpose of the buildiug improvements is not to m.ir tlie beauty.of the cemetery. nor to make it l-ss secure, but the more secure., A heavy wal l will still enclose the Cfmeteiyon the same side; neat which'no building ©ill I>c erected, tind thf* houses on the trout be built in pairs, with open spaces between them; cousequeutly, the oc cupant* of-the houses, while they will onjoy the pros pfets atid free circulation of tho air over the cenutory grounds, will be its irionilly protector. " Tlie Managers sincerely believe what they propose will be for the truest interest of the lotnoiders.- It has be n by the Malingers* capital, and their care for many years past, fliat the most beautiful park in tho viciuity of Phi- as been preserved as nu ornaments and res cued from; ihc levelling process of:buildings by the ex tension over it of bouses and factories. They have pre served it at a cost that bas not been, and the expect never will be, recompensed, otherwise than by securiag an object of public interest and bumaue utility. There they themselves have secured, and wish to protect, their own burial lots;, there fney have buried those they most Joyed.-and there they expect also to bo buried. They think, therefoi'e, they ought to be trusted to manage for the bestsecurily of all; and if they conld do better thru they propose to do, they would endeavor to do it, having in vif-w both the security of.ihe Jotliolders and the pre servation of the cemetery, as the most beautiful piece of rural scenery that can in tl o fotnre ornament the centre of the great city now advancing rapidlv to enclose tho cemetery.- ELI K. The United States Christian Commission is NATIONAL. embracing all States of the Union , all ports of ike Ar my and Navy* and all denominations of Christians, and has the full t anction of the National authorities, civil, military, and naval. its aim is to minister to the religious and temporal wants of all weariDg the National uniform on land and sea. The Christian Commission regards our bra ve defenders as men, having both bodies ana souls. Bodily relief to suffering men. is important and imperative; without it, religious admonitions are in vain, and a mockery• Therefore, the Commission receives and distributes clothing and comforts, and sends relief to the sick, wounded, and destitute, by every one of its delegates. Religious instruction and consolation are more price less still, and' while meeting bodily wants, does not forget that God made men living souls to live by His own and that, "there is none other name given amongst men whereby we can be saved ’’ but the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore sends as ‘delegates only such men as love the Saviour arid his , Word, and delight to point otherSto the Lamb of God. >•••'■ . ITS PLAN : Hi , ia to have ministers and.laymen as delegates in every*. Military Department and Naval Squadron to aid Chap-, Jains, preach the Gospel, hold prayer meetings, relieve the sick and wounded, instruct and console the dying, write to their friends at home, reeeive and distribute the Scriptures, books, papers* and traets. with clothing and comforts, and accompany all with words of cheer to the men from home, and with prayer to God for His blessingr upon them. ; Over fonr hundred men have- already enlisted as dele gates, many oJ whom are still fn the field and as work;; thirty-one in the Army of the Potomac, others in the* Army of the Cumberland, thje Army of the Mississippi, atMemphis and near Vicksburg; the Army of Missouri and Arkansas, amongst our* soldiers “at Harper’s Ferry, and Winchester, Va. ;in the. S’ves his services without salary; all railroads afford, eir facilities either free or at half price; over the wires of twenty-five thousand miles telegraphic companies transmit despatches, to and from the Commission with out charge; and the. Government gives free transpor tation over all its lipes. For economy* directness, comprehensiveness of aim, and certainty of execution, no other age-icy hai ever ex celled this; and as a field the world'never presented one of greater interest or promise. ■ ITS UNBOUNDED OPPORTUNITIES. AFTER A THOROUGH TRIAL OF MORETHIN TEIf : YEARS, the time-pieces manufactured by the Americas* Watch Company, of Waltham, Mass., have gained a firmi I hold upon the favor of the public, and now, no less than • 75,000 of them are speaking for. themselves in the pockets. ;. of the people. From- a very insignificant beginning the j- business has increased to an extent exceeding our most • sanguine anticipations r and we are now- ustifled in ; stating that WE MAKE MORE .THAN ONEcHALF of all • the watches sold in the United States. Repeated enlarge ; ment of our factory buildings, and the labor of 500 opera-' j tives, still find us unequal to supply the constantly in v creasing demand. And? we m-ay here observe that hot *• withstanding the high price of labor and materials, we ' .•l.aotualiy sell our producteatless prices than lhQse.cun*eat ;r five years ago. ' ,i We refer to these facts only for the purpose of properly . introducing another subject relative to our manufacture cf watches. Hitherto our chief objeet has been to make ! good watches for the million- at the lowest possible price —something totake the place of the make-believe watches . called 4 ‘Aneres," * ‘Lepines, ‘ ‘English Patent Levers, ” annually, thrown upon this market, in countless numbers, by European workshops—watches which are the refuse of their factories,, unsaleable at home and per fectly worthless everywhere. * . • This object we have accomplished, and now we have to announce, that m e have commenced the manufacture of watches of the very. HIGHEST GRADE KNOWN TO CHRONO-METRY, unequalled by anything hitherto made by ourselves and unsurpassed by anything made-in the world. For this purpose we have the amplest facilities. We have erected an addition to our main buildings expressly for this branch of our business, and’ have filled it with the best workmen in. our service. Profiting by our long expe rience, we have remodelled the form of our watches, in troducing such improvements as havebeeu suggested and ; proved to be good from time to.time, and have instituted new* and severe tests of isocbionism, adjustment, and compensation. New machines and appliances havobeen constructed, which perform their work w ith consummate delicaoyand exactitude, and the choicest and most ap proved materials only are used. Nothing, in fact', is wanting either in. mechanical principles, material, or w orkmanship to insure perfection in the result.. .We continue to manufacture our other wall-known qualities under the following names; . ..: . “APPLETON, TRACY AGO.” “P. S. BARTLETT,’* And the “Soldier’s VTalGh.” - 41 WM. ELLERT. n The latter; the lowest-priced watch we make, i&a sub stantial, reliable time-piece, cased in sterling silver hunting pattern, and is not liable to get out of order tether in marching, riding, or fiahtiag. All the-above described wateheß, including the- jvmst y which is named ! *‘AMERICAN WATCH COMPANY” on the plate, are iold by watch dealers generally throughout thocountry.
