A • NOTRER SNOW STORM.—As we write,
the heavens are lowering and snow is falling as re
*platy as gold is rising, threatening another spasm of
grim old winter. We need hardly add that theanti-
Alote to all this is Allen's Coal, sold at W. W. Altar's
coal yard, Ninth street, above Poplar. It is now
'universally admitted that Mr. Alter sells better
•coal, gives the beet weight, and more of it for the
cmoney, than any other coal merchant in the city.
'ibis accounts for his immense trade.

:Are of the opinion that the taste they have displayed
- will secure for them a greatly increased patronage.
Considering the fact of their agmtrable style of get
ting up fssbionnble garments, their uniformly mode
sate prices, and the superb stock of goods which
they offer to select from, we would recommend to
all our readers not to order suits before visiting
,Tvlessrs. Somers & Son's popular establishment.
THE FUN SEASON is by no means over,
df we may judge from the quantity of these faskriona

Messrs. Charles Oakford & Son, under the Conti

enabled to execute the largest orderefor pictures at

admired, also, by. connoisseurs in the art.

Trot FIRST UPRIGHT OR CARINRT
TIANOEI of STEINWAY & SONG have arrived at the
undersigned, and are the admiration of all who see
them. In construction, touch, and volume of tone,
they are full Grand Pianos, standing upright. Thus
Steinway has again succeeded to remedy the corn-
Mon defects of this, in Europe, so popular form of a
Piano, and combines in them all the well-knotin and
universally admired qualities of his Square and
Grand Pianos. A large assortment of those splendid
unequalled Square and Grand Pianos, which re
ceived last summer the first prize medal at the In
ternational Exhibition in London, over 269 Pianos
Stout all parts of the world, are always on hand at
Mashie Brothers, 1006 Chestnut streets. fol4-swat
STRPTIEN GIRARD ow BUSINESS.—" Se
lect the kind of business that suits your inclination
and temperament. Some men are naturally me
than tea, and come have a strong aversion to ma
chinery, and so on. I never could be content with
a fixed 'salary, for mine is purely a speculative dis
position, while others are just the reverse, and
therefore all should be careful to select those occu
pations that suit them hest. Also in advertising, if
your goods or business is worth following, advertise
liberally. He who neglects advertising, not only
lobs himself of its benefits, but bestows its advan
tages upon hie wiser rivals." The truth of this last
,remark is exemplified in the- success of the colt- -
tbrated " one-priee" fleet-class ready-maile Clothing
•Store of Charles Stokes & Co., under the Continen
tat Hotel, during a term of three years, by liberal ad
'vertislog, and first-class goods, tiding a business un

THE LADIES GOING TO BLAZES. —" A big
thine on head dresses is about to astonish the
fashionable world. Clusters of diminutive gas-lights
:are now to spring from the tresses of beautiful ma
trons; the jets will issue from burners within trans
parent shades exquisitely cut, not larger than a
cherry. The tubing is to be of gold, connected with
a reservoir of tt e same ".valuable metal, which is to
lie concealed in the meshes of luxuriant hair behind
the head. The pressure will be applied to the tank,
whichis supported by an elaborate back comb, the
top of which forms a row of little gas-lights. Any
man desiring to ornament himself in a manner far au
.perior to his better half, however, need only repair to
the well•known Clothing Establishment of Gran
ville Stokes, No. 009 Chestnut street, Philadelphia,
where is on hand the choicest stock of garments in
- ,the city.
THE HALL OP INDEPENDENCE ON Frn.E.—
Chestnut street wits thrown into an uproar on Mon
day, by the discovery that the Hall of Indepen
dence was on tire. Some enthusiastic individual
clattered away upon the State House bell upon his
own account, and confusion dire reigned supreme
for a time. Fortunately, the 'acted edifice sustained
no serious damage, and Chestnut street still hoasts
an Independence Hall as well as a Brown Stone
Clothing Bali. The latter Is owned and occupied
by Messrs. Rockhill & Wilson, *lndia located at Nos.
603 and 6')6, above Sixth street.

PHILADELPMA. V ebnuirY 17. 1863-
'There was considerable excitement in th'e gold market
to-day, and at one time the price reached 150, falling off,
however, bet closing strong at ma. Speculation, of
course, is the characterizing feature of the market,
mingled, perhaps, with doubts as to the early settlement
of thennancial question in Washington. The necessi

create aterror among business men and persons 'of mo

SPECIAL NOTICE&
THE VALENTINE
B Y TEE BARD OF TOWER lIALL.
Torn Brixton had a valentine
To him last week presented;. . • •
He read the verses every lire,
And felt almost demented.
For alm—the maiden of his heart—
The document had written. • -
And in it owned that Cupid's dart '
.Her tender breast had amittt3a.
Oh Brixton thus the damsel wrote, •
Your suit !long rejected; "
And while you wore that ill-cut coat
My heart was not affected.
For then your back a mountain seemed.
Your bosom looked quite hollow;
But now your figure might bo deemed
A Belvidere Apollo. •
Like Byron's Arnold, you have been
Transformed, my gentle Brixton;
And sure, of all the coats I've seen,
The nicest you have fixed on.
Of course at Tower Hall yon bought
That garment most amazing,
Which first your Susan's fancy caught
And set her heart to blazing.

BY REV. JOHN B. AMERY,

• Price .
Aughey's volume discloses a few cues, among
thimeands, and makes us shudder to think of what
might be told could thembole truth. And its way to the
light. He was about eleven years at the South, and in
this work he gives us an inside view of the machinery
employed to precipitate the rebellion, of the stifling of
Union voices, and of the merciless'conscription.
Hie own personal narrative is one of the most thrilling
and touching ever written. The arrest, the imprison
went, the escape, the rearrest, the honing under the
uplifted sword, the reincarceration, the filthy dungeon,
tht loathsome food, the second t scope, the pursuit ity
cavalry and bloodhounds, the famishing from thirstand
hunter, tad the final exodus from the iron I aroma, and
reception under the folds of the good old flag, form such
a story that we envy not the heart of him who can read
it without deep emotion. His views of slavery, as it
presented itself for eleven succetsive years to his own
eye, cannot fail at this time to interest all. .
