    CITY ITEMS.
Surmtion WHEAT nouit.—Mr. C. H.
Mattson, dealer in fine family groceries, Arab and
'Tenth streets, has now in store a fresh supply of
'Wheat Flour, of the most desirable brands, fresh
ground, from the finest quality of wheat, to which
'we invite the attention of our readers.
THE BEST STOCK OF LADIES' FURS in
this city, at the lowest pricey, can be found at Oak
lord & Son's, under the Continental Hotel.
EXQUISITE SPECIMENS OF THE PHOTO.
4311A1"1110 ART, 111 all sizes and styles, can be seen at
the splendid ground-ttoor gallery of Mr. Ripple, No.
82 . 0 Arch street. 1115 elegant pictures are daily be
coming more and more the general favorite. of the
ambito.
ARMY AND NAVY OFFICERS Will find a
'magnificent stock of swords, sashes, belts, and other
military articles in that line, at Oakford & Son%
- under the Continental Hotel. .
Sioxon Bum, Assembly Building, Tenth
And Chestnut. Variety is eald to be the spice of life ;
then, let all epicures of enjoyment witness the
varied entertainment of this merry performer. His
mimicsl delusions are wonderful, his learned birds
intellectual, and his ventriloquism laughable. Here
spay be found a feast of reason and a now of soul.
SOMETHING TAKE A RATTL.—It appears
that Mr. Amami Hall, of Baltimore, assisted by an
inter-Loper, of Philadelphia, has been doing a thing
in the marine way that must have sent him off
into transports, but they should have been such as
the brave soldiers of General Banks' expedition
had to risk their lives in, only a little more so. Will
the Government ever learn not to' make contracts
privately, but advertise its wants in the press, and
let the best and lowest bidder be the man T No pri
vate individual or corporation does business so
loosely as allowing a - party to buy his own property
and sell it at his owe price. What can be done with
Government contractors? In the meantime the
price* marked on all of the goods offered for sale at
Charles Stokes & Co.'s Clothing Store, under the
Continental, where the public can inspect both the
goods and the price.
ST. VALENTINE'S DAY.—Saturday was
the day of all the year when the postman's ring is
looked for moat anxiously and responded to most
promptly. Every letter.carrier becomes one of Cu
phi's messengers for the nonce, and be delivers
amatory missives that are as varied in style as the
tastes of their senders are different. Some are done
up in resplendent gold and lace, and what they lack
in poetic taste is compensated for by their artistic
getting-up. The most sensible valentine we have
seen was one that was sent by a lady to her would
be-lover. It ran in this wise: "Would you know
/ow to woo and win me? Then eschew bat' fits,
procure all your wearing apparel at the Brown and
Stone Clothing Hall of Rockhill k Wilson, Nos. 603
and 606 Cseatnut street, above Sixth."
' EFFECTS OF THE CORSET.—Whatever me
chanical contrivance is so applied to the cheat as
to shut out from the lungs a part of the air they are
capable of receiving, causes a degeneration of the
blood, increases the liability to disease, and becomes
the groundwork of premature decay and death. Dr.
Berbest, by actual experiment made on young men
'ho wore the Russian belt or corset, ascertained
that when belted they inhaled, at their deepest in
apiration, from one-fourth to one-third leas air than
when the belt was removed and the chest left free
from constraint. Those who wear the neat and
comfortable-fitting garments, made to order at the
One-price Clothing Emporium of Granville Stokes,
Vb. 609 Chestnut street, need have no fear of not
being able to breathe freely, and thus lengthen life.

novel and appropriate in design, and posseeees unusual

when worn in this form it has more of the truly military
character than the disliked and almost discarded taper
ing or steeple-crown regulation hat.

agreeably to a fancy much indulged in of late by
mUt
tary men.
vinw No. a Exhibits the Hat compressed or folded

without farce, and when 'opened oat again exhibits no
irregular marks nr creases.
Many of these liatgsre:new in the use of the Officers of

BY BET. JOHN H. ANONRY..
A Usfngeefrom Mississippi,
Price $l.
Mr. Aughoy's volume discloses a few cases, among
thousands, and maker usshudder to think of what
..migut be told mule the whole truth find its way to the
light. He was about eleven years at the South, and in
this work he gives us an inside VieNV of th. machinery
employed to precipitate the rebellion, of the stifling of
Union voices, and of the merciless conscription.
His owe personal Darrell ve is one of the most thrilling
and touching ever written.. The arrest, the imprison
ment, the escape, the rearrest,. the Atoning under the
unfitted sword, the reinearceration, the filthy dungeon,
ths loathsome food, the second .SCAPe, the pursuit by
cavalry and bloodhounds, the famishing from thirst and
hunker, and the Anal exodus from the iron furnace, and
reception under the folds of the good old flag, form such
a story that we envy not the heart .of him who can read
dt without deep emotion. His views of slavery, as it
presented imeit for eleven succe.sive years to hie own
eye cannot fail atlb is time to interest all.'
