ALEMAIcDIIII Du gate DINNER.—A. dinner
given to Alexandre Daman took place in an apart
ment, where the most beautiful gilt medieval statu
ettes, works of modern fancy, detached themselves
all round from the garnet 7 hued paper hangings,
which were here and there soberly relieved by great
golden nails; whilst on tho vast chimney the an
tique "Thief," in bronze, four to five feet in height,
raising up its arms between two immense china
vases flowing over with flowers and leaves, heaths
and creepers, seemed to applaud the great Venus of
Milo, who, white and serene, stood opposite to him
on the top of a sculptured pedestal, dominating all
the other statues. Alexandre himself was elegantly
attired in garments purchased at the superb One-
Price Clothing Establishment of Granville Stokes,
No. 609 Chestnut
,strect, Philadelphia, where every
winter fashion, of the most complete design, is al
ways procurable.
GREAT REDUCTION IN WINTER CLOTH
two at Charles Stokes & Co.'s "One-Price"first
class Clothing Store, under the Continental Hotel.
The public are invited to call and examine the goods
and prices. We arc satisfied that no such ready
made garments are to be had in this city, or any
other place, at the prices we are now selling them
for. The material is of the most desirable patterns.
Both Men and Boys' Clothing is °tiered at the re
duced rates for the coming week, and parties in want
of clothing can effect a considerable saving by pur
chasing immediately. Remember! under the Con
tinental, in Chestnut street, Charles Stokes & Co.,

A LETTER-WRITING Ll2ll - Y.—A recent
mail from . Newbern, N. C., brought nearly seventy
thousand letters from soldiers in the Federal army
to their friends at home. The writers of these epis
tles were all staunch and intelligent Union men, and
they affbrded their recipients a very correct view of
camp -life, and of the various shifting scenes in a
soldier's career. Not a few
. ..Of theta epistles con
tained eulogistic remarks concerning the elegant
garments for citizens, soldiers, and youths, made at
the Brown Stone Clothing Hall of Rockhill & Wilson,
Nos. 603 and 606 Chestnut street, above Sixth.

A : . CARD FRQM L 40: DETACROIX.-
.The Lrullne class at the French study is fall fur the
'mooing. The afternoon and evening hours fur gentle
men may yet receive a few students for the French
course.
. .
No one who has practised my system of the French
idiom throughout has failed to acquire a competent gram
matical and conversational use of the language for all
the purposes of httsinese and social intercourse.
I require no committing to memory, no home studies ;
all I require is that the whole mime be deliberately
practised to the end, even though if:Aptitude should ex
tend the time beyond the usual average of other students
attending at the same hours.
DELACROIX'S THEORY APPLIED TO OTHER LAN
GUAGES.
I profess no other language than the French; I never
theless, long ago, composed non-uiernorixing'systems of
other languages, for those only of my pupils who, after
having finished the course of Piencli, might wish tq,cou
ttnue with one another. I have now attending, betides
my students of French, several who, after the French,
are practising en a second language; and some on a third.
The satisfactory result of the French coulee gave them
full confidence in my theory for other lanquages. They
were never required to study at home. They practice
deliberately while with me, and trouble themselves no
more about the matter till they come to the next lesson.
I publish these particulars merely to make known that
the ready use of two or three foreign languages may,
with ease and certainty, be grammatically acquired in
about the same number of applications that the memo
rizing methods reqnire for the French alone.

the American iloblic;• lrf promptly bringing mit Mr.
RUSSELL'S DIARY in afirantissime reprint; let usi ImM ,
by the way. with compensation to the anther. The
book is certain to he viably read, riot less fromtheitts .
terest attaching to the writer sari the subject, bur ati
account of its picture's - 11'e style or narrative,- which is:-
admirable; and we believe that •iS It. book, a whit'
re.. ding of which de-aced on. both sides of the ,
Atlantic, by conveying truthful viewsi o en many subjects
still imperfectly understomds In this respect, M. Rim-=
sell's Diary is better. titan it :liirietterawspe,.because the
Diary records principally accaos-and'consversations just
as they occurred, -from which thoireader may draw his
own inferences; and if the faettrere truly stated (and we
find no traces of the contrary) wo•must all be e,ntent to,
accept the nfere [mei which followin the minds of reason
able and 'candid men. We, of Gleillbrth..cartainly, -do
net shrink from this test. The book rooreoverwill serve
to remove much Of the obloquy which . has, unjustly
attached to its author. It will be found that lig has been
at least a better friend - of the Union than , many among
ourselves; he said nothing so bitter on so hard of us as
many things which were said to him:land , hir dared,
even at Montgomery, to lift tee his voicei against the
hideousness of a new nation avowedlyifennding: itself,
by deliberation, upon chattel slavery-as a corner-etone:
Be exposed to the Southerners at every 'turn' the ab
surdity of their 7.octrine; that Cottonif King,. upon •
which they foolishly relied to force the great l s Swors of.
Europe to intervene for their independence. Thz auJ
swore he received, in such con vcrsation, here faithfiiity
reported, will aid in opening the eyes of the Britisibpub
lic to the facts of the case. We regard the publication of
the book as timely, and despite a very-few , blemishes,
ascribable to not unnatural prejudices ; the author de-
'serves en the whole to receive the rare
need of 'praise
which attaches to - impartiality. The unmerited abuse
which has been poured Open him would have been
considered .by many. writers, . under similar dream
`stances, nos inviting a retaliation - in- kind from. which
Mr. Russell magnanimously abstains. —Boston Adver
