PERSONAL, The Emperor Napoleon has just despatched to Horace Vernet the decorations of a grand officer of the Legion of Honor, accompanied by an autograph letter, This mark of special favor was designed as sioniething to alleviate the pains of the severe ill ness under which the distinguished artist labors. The King of Hanover has just celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of his career as a musical composer, the Hist of his compositions being dated the Ist of December, 1837. His Majesty has com posed more than two hundred pieces, consisting of ballads, quatuors, ts.e. The Queen got up a little concert on the occasion, in which the piincedses of the royal ;tunny and some artists of the opera exe outed several of the King's compositions. The Mazzinlan organ in Milan publishes a let ter addressed to Garibaldi by the Polish students assembled at Heidelberg from various other univer sitieS, informing him that they have drunk his health at a banquet. .This letter is followed by a Suitable reply from the General, who informs them that he is much better, and will, perhaps, soon be able to fight again for the cause of liberty. A..memorial is preparing in Glasgow soliciting a pension of £lOO a year for the widow of Sheridan Knowles. A handsome monument is about to be -erected to his memory in the Glasgow Necropolis; sand two of his friends in London, one of whom went .all the way to attend . this funeral, have put down their names for £lOO each: —Baron de Rothschild has just placid his usual annual gift of thirty thonsand kilogrammes of bread at the disposal of theAd ministration of Public Assist ance fOi . the benefit of the pool:of Paris. Signor Mario has abandoned to the pension fund of the Paris opera the sum which was coming to him for the . part In which he appeared in the "Hu guenots." Matilda Phillips, a sister of the contralto Ade laide, will soon appear on the operatic stage. She is also a conttalto. —A young Polish lady of remarkable beauty, pained Kuzzavinska, who recently arrived in Paris from Warsaw, was burned to death while on a visit to a friend in the Rue Illonthyon. MISCELLANEOUS ITENS, A MANSION of sonic historic interest—Ballydon- Jan 'HoUse, county of Galway, Ireland—was nearly destroyed by lire a few weeks ago. It was one of the most ancient seats in Galway, the O'Donlans occupying it in the fourteenth century, when they lived in all the style of Irish princes. The estate of the O'Donlans became heavily encumbered, and a few years ago changed owners. It was sold in di visions, the house and demesne becoming the pro perty of one John D. Mahon, who had tradesmen employed in making some important repairs when the accident occurred. A BERLIN JOURNAL states that there are now in the Prussian capital seven butchers' shops for the sale of horse fiesh, and that seven hundred and fifty horses have been killed in the present year for their supply. No animal can be slaughtered for these esta blishments without a certificate from the veterinary surgeon of the police. A PLAN has Just been tried on -the Northern Railway, in England for receiving the letter bags at the intermediate stations without stopping the train. By means of a ring the bsg is attached to a post on the line; the engine is provided with a rod so disposed as to catch the ring, and thus carry off the letters. By a similar contrivance, bags are left by the train, when necessary. AN ITALIAN JOUTINA.L credits King Victor. Emnitutuelwith a boa mac, uttered during the late rni nisterial crisis. Ills Majesty, it affirms, felt desirous of going out hunting one day, but was prevented by heavy rain. " said he, "I see that, whether I 'will or not, I must keep my Chamber." SAMPLES OF COTTON, grown this year in the department of Gard, in France, have just been sent to Faris. They were raised from seeds supplied by the Sociele d'Acclimation, and are of two descriptions, Sea Island and Louisiana. Notwithstanding the unfavorable weather which has prevailed this year in the south of France, the cotton is believed to be as good In quality as that grown last year on the same estate, and sent to the International Exhibition. THE OFFICIAL GAZETTE I OF TURIN, pub lishes a report addressed to the king, by the Minis ter of Public Works, stating that the Virginia to bacco leaf has risen to such a price, in consequence of the civil war in America, that it has become ne cessary to seek for a substitute. The minister,. therefore, recommends the King to otter a prize of 10,000 francs for any kind of tobacco, whether home gtown or forobign, which shall possess all the quali ties of the Virginia leaf. The report is followed by a royal decree to that effect. PROFESSOR WINOHELL, State Geologist of Michigan, reports that the wholecentral area of that State, embracing . 187 townships, or 6,700 square miles, is underlaid by coal seams, ranging in thick ness from three to live feet. Mines have been open ed in several places, three at Jackson and one at Corrunna, which last year yielded over 23,000 tons. The coal resembles that of the Illinois beds in quality, DR. BRUHNS, the director of the Observatory of Leipsio, has discovered two new comets. The first appears as a very diffused nebulosity of about two minutes diameter. The second cornet is described as brighter than the first, and a better defined object. The maximum brilliancy of each will be attained nearly at the same period, January 1, 1563. THE POLICE. (Before. Mr. Alderman Welding.] Sergenut of the Provost Guard. John Boyle, who styled himself the sergeant of the provost guard, was arraigned before Alderman Welding, yesterday morning, on the charge of at tempting to arrest three men, from New Jersey, on New Year's Eve, as deserters. The evidence deve loped the • fact, thati the three gentlemen front our sister State came to Philadelphia on Wednesday af ternoon for the purpose of seeing the town celebra tion of New Year's Eve. While walking leisurely along Walnut street, near Independence Square, they were suddenly confronted • by the defendant, who demanded them to " halt," saying at the same time" I want you." One •of the men rather laughed at him, and did not seem disposed to mind the fellow. "Halt 1" said he, "or I'll blow your brains out. Pin tile sergeant of the provost guard." "Well, what if you are 1" responded one of the strangers, " what have you to do with us l" "You arc deserters, anti I'm bound to take you"— here he put Lis baud under his coat breast, as though he intended toOraw a pistol. • The Jerscymen bean to think they were about to see more of New 1 ear's eye than they rather had " ealkelated on," and, fearin g the intruder meant' something desperve,_uread themselves and gave him wi6 The parties separated, but presently the "sergeant of the guard" attacked them again, and, without any more ceremony, struck one of them a'severe fist blow in the face. Presently the police arrived, and the " son'of Mars," as he represented himself to be, had to succumb to the civil power. At the hearing before the magistrate, yesterday, lie said that he aid not intend' to shoot any of the men; and as he had no musket, they might have known this much. Alderman Welding read the supposed sergeant of the guard a sound lecture on his attempt to overawe citizens, and gave him to understand that in Philadelphia the civil law is yet above the military. Thedefendant was then onlered to enter bail in the BUM of $6OO, to answer at•court. In default, he was sent to prison. A Thentai Attack upon an Old Gentleman. A man giving the name of Michael O'Donnell was arraigned before the same alderman, on the charge of making en unjustifiable assault upon an aged gentleman in the vicinity of Seventh and Chestnut streets, between twelve and one o'clock yesterday morning. It seems that the old gentle man was returning front a " watch-meeting" held at a Methodist church, and as he reached Chestnut and Seventh streets the prisoner made an attack, and endeavored to take his cane front him. A. police officer, who happened to be in a dark corner, over heard all, and saw the transaction. He arrested the aggressor, and the result was a series of ground and Jolty tumbling, during which the officer was badly bitten in the hand by the desperado. Other officers were soon to the rescue, and the belligerent individual was conducted to the station- - house. At the hearing he had little or nothing to say about the.afrnir. He was committed in default ut $5OO to /IMAM at court. Though the old gentle .man, who was thus saved by the officer, walked away, yet the subsequent conduct of the prisoner induced the alderman to require bail for the ap,. pearance of the defendant. Nils - rear's Eve and New Year's 3foriting. The arrests made by the police on New Year's eve and morning, in all parts of the city, were much smaller in point of numbers, than has been the case on similar occasions for a number of years. The officers allowed considerable license and let - the people enjoy themselves. At twelve o'clock at night, the sky was clear and the moon lavished down its silvery rays in glory and beauty. The new-born year was ushered in by very little tiring. At this time, however, large numbers of serena ding parties were out, some with excellent music, others with that of an indifferent character. Quite a number of choirs of the Methodist persuas:on, watch-meetings being over, serenaded, vocally, some of their fellow-members, at their residences. During the whole of this lime there was no serious disturb ance to call for the intervention of the police autho rities. At some of the station houses that we vial ted yesterday, not a single arrest had been made. The lieutenants, as usual on the first day of the year, made no returns at the Central Station yesterday morning. Supremo Court pA _ the . United States at tVwshington. Such a remedy is surely wanted by those who suffer from Simmons complaints, and chat one which will accomplish their care must prove of iw mense service to this large class of our atilicted fellow citizens. How COMDICtSIY this compound will do it has been proven by experiment co many of the worst eases to be found in the renewing comjdaints : SCROFULA AND SCROFULOUS DOMPLAINTS, Enurrloars AND ERUPTIVE DISEASES, HLCF.RS, PIMPLES. BLOTCHES, TUMORS, SALT RHEUM, SCALD HIIAD,_SYPHILTS AND SY PHILITIC AFFECTIONS L MERCURIAL DISEASE, DROPSY', NEUR ALMA OR Tic Dor,onscx DEBILITY, DYSPEPSIA AND INDRiESTION, ERYSIPP.LAS, HOSE OR ST. ANTHONY'S FIRE, and indeed the whole class of complaints arising from IMPURITT OF VHF. BLOOD. This compound will ho found a great promoter Of health when taken in the spring to expel the foul hu mors which fester in the blood at that season of the year. By the timely expulsion of them many rankling disor ders are nipped In the bud. Multitudes can, by the aid of this remedy, spare themselves from the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous 'ioreS, thronglf which the system will strive to rid itself of corruptions. if not as msted to do this through the natural channels of the body by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the vitia ted blood whenever you find its Impurities bursting through the skin in pimples, eruptions, or sores; cleanse it when you find it is obstructed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it whenever it is foul, and your feelings Will tell you when. Even where no Particular disorder Is felt, people enjoy better health, and live longer, br cleansing the blond. Keep thz blood healthy, and all is ,well; but with the pabulum of life disordered, there can be no lasting health. Sooner or later something must go wrong, and the great machinery of life is disordered er Overthrown. During late years the public have been misled by large bottles, pretending to give a quart of Extract of Sarsa parilla for one dollar. Most of these have been frauds upon the sick, fur they not only . contain little, if any, Sarsaparilla, but often no curative properties whatever. Bence, bitter and painful disappointment has followed the use of the various extracts of Sarsaparilla which flood the market, until the name itself is4ustly despised, and has become synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend to supply such a remedy as shall rescue the name from the load of obloquy which rests upon it. And we think we have ground for believing it leas virtues whieh are irre sistible by the ordinary run of the diseases it is intended to enre. 1862. . . Prepared by Da. J. C. The object of the following certificates is to show that cures at 'IMO WALNUT Street are permanent and re liable. The tirst cure was performed nearly three years ago, the second was performed nearly one year ago, the third about one year, and hundreds more of like cages might he shown. READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY. About twelve months ago I had a severe attack of Diabetes, attended with otner difficulties too numerous to mention. My desire for drink was constant, and al though I drank gallons per day, my thirst was never allayed; I was only able to sleep at snort intervals, which seemed like a trance. The mucous surface of my month and throat had become so parched and feverish, that I was in constant misery. I was also suffering from all the horrors of Dyspepsia, loss of appetite, Nau sea, and frequent and severe attacks of vomiting; and so prostrated was my general system, that .1 was scarcely able to move about. I had availed myself of the science and skill of distinguished medical men, both of the Allo pathic and Hommopathic school, and exhausted their catalogue of remedies, but found only temporary relief. In this condition, when every ray of hope seemed para lyzed, I heard of the discovery of Professor Bolles in the use of Electricity, and the wonders he was performing in curing disease, and placed 'myself under his treatment; and, to the astonishment of myself and friends, in two operations my Diabetes was controlled, and other diffi culties soon disappeared ; my appetite has returned, sleep undisturbed, and, in fact, I feel like one made anew. I would further state that I have seen other remark able cures performed by Prof. Bolles, and would advise the diseased to call at 12.20 Walnut street, and be restored to health. I shall be glad to give any one information calling on me. THOMAS HARROP Rose Mill, West Philadelphia. Philadelphia, May 1gt,1960. Read the following from a preacher of the Methodist ppiscopal Church, No. NM lielmuth street, Philadel hia: In attempting a definition of my disease, I can only give some of the many symptoms which, taken altoge ther, were the most horrid ; and e%en medical men did not know my disease from pathological symptoms. How ever, Professor C. H. Bolles, by whom I was cured, lo cated my disease in the pelvic viscera, in five minutes after I entered his office, and offered to warrant a perfect cure in eight applications. And I frankly admit that in eight applications of Electricity. administered hy.Pro lessor Bom.E.s, 1220 Walnut street, Philadelphia, I am perfectly cured; a n d to me this is most astonlahing, for I had exhausted the catalogue of old-school remedies, and grow worse all the time. - - . I had long believed that In Electricity resided a potent agent for the cure of disease, if a right application muild be made; and now I can comprehend, from its powerful effects on me, for a speedy cur?, although no shocks were given. All was pleasant, and accomplished as if by magic. I will give most of my symptoms, for the benefit of suffering humanity. I had dyspepsia, bad marasmus, or wasting of the tissues of the whole body: at times a difficulty of breathing, some palpitation of the heart, much bronchitis, trembling of the limbs after exercise, aversion to business and company : at times gloomy, ina bility to collect my thoughts vigorously on any subject. a loss of memory, pain in various parts of the body; suf fered much from lumbago, cieriinvd secretions of the kidneys and other glands of the system, constant drag ging pains In the lumbar region, and severe nervous diz ziness. I believe it is my duty, as a lover of humanity, to re commend this discovery of Professor BOLLES to Rhe `no of all classes. Thera seems to be. no guesswork, no confusion', no matter of doubt in his treatment. He proceeds on fixed principles, and according to fixed laws, which seem to mo infallible uud harmonious. He war rants, by special contract, the most obstinate, chronic and acute cases, and charges nothing, if he fails. I ad vise all of the diseased to try his treatment. • EDWARD T. EVANS, Preacher in M. E. Church, •Ifi33 HELMUTH Street, Philadelphia. ANOTHER CURE OP PARALYSIS OP THE LOWER LIMBS (Paraplegia) Ai(D APul'LIs~F COMBINED. Read the following: PRTIADELPICIA, March 31,1562 PROFESSOR BOLLES. 1220 Walnut street; The remarka ble care which I have derived from your method of ap plying Electricity compels me to thus acknowledge the great obligations ant auderto you for snatching me, as it were, from inYroediate death. About two years ago,. while a resident of Cincinnati. Ohio, I was visited with an attack of paralysis of the lower extremities, which rendered me • almost entirely unable to stand upon my li m b s . I employed some of the moat celebrated physi cians to be found in that section, but received no appa rent benefit, and after a lapso of about eighteen months was taken with a spasm, which one of MY physicians pronounced a fit of apoplexy. Two weeks elapsed from that time before I became the least conscious of anything that had transpired, nor could I concentrate my mind or converse upon any eubiect without becoming very vi sionary and excited, until I placed myself under your valuable treatment. After my arrival in Philadelphia handednton was called to your treatment by a pamphlet me by my father, which contained the names of some gentlemen whom I had been formerly acquainted With, and whose statements I could rely upon. I imme diately made up my mind to place myself under your treatment. I have now been the recipient of four treat ments, and I now feel perfectly satisfied that lam re stored to a sound condition, and thefore feel it nay duty to gratefully acknowledge the benefits which I have re ceived through your treatment. Very respectfully yours, &c., WILLIAM R. BRAIN, Publisher of the National Merchantt office 126 South SECOND Street, Philadelphia. N. B.—lt will be well for the diseased to recollect that Prof. B. has given a word ,of gantion in his pamphlet to guard them against trusting their health in the hands of those in this city claiming to treat diseases according to his discovery. This caution may seem severe on those using Electricity at hazard, but it is the severity of truth, and designed for the good of humanity. See advertise ment in another column. Coneultation Free.
