John Bull Getting ;His Back TTr-.—Oar
bovine cousin, across the water, is getting bis beefy back
up beesnse the ‘>290,” whioh ha gave Captain Semmas,
to play pirate with, haß proved to be an edge-tool whioh
cuts friends as well as foes. John has had some of his
rich cargoes burnt at sea by his pet pirate, and ha is con
sequently after the P. P. with a Bharp Btick. We trust
that John, or somebody else, may speedily catch the
raw-bef-d-and-bloody-bones gentleman, and that the bold
bnecaneer may be treated to a hempen neck-tie at the
end of one of his own yard arms. Whoever brings to

Bic. Things.— London is a great city, and
Now Yorkers regard their city as an'immense munici
pality, and Philadelphia, in Bausre miles, excels either
of them. Tut If the Mayors of Nineveh and Babylon
could revisit the earth they would laugh at the preten
aions of the moderns. The area of Babylon wag 285
sauare miles, surrounded with a wall 100 feet high, To
feet thick, wilh 100 brass gates; and Nineveh contlined
218 sunare miles, Burronnded with a wall 100 feet high,
and wide enough for three chariots to drive abreast.
Yet, with all this, they had no ready-made clothing
eatahlishment, where their citizens could be clothed
handsomely and cheaply, ae we can, at Charles
Stokes’s first-class Clothing Store, under the Conti
nental. ■
An Odd Fashion Stilt, in Yogub.—Falling
in love is an old fashion, and one that will yet endure.
Oobbstt, a good, sonndEnglishman, twitted Malthas, the
enti- population writer, with the factthat do all he could,
and all that Government could, ay, all that twenty thou
sand governments could, he could not prevent courting
and falling in love. 11 Between fifteen and twenty-two,”
saidbe, “all people will fall in love.” This is the aye at
which young men generally show their taste and good
judgment by wearing tha handsome and durable styles of
clothing, gotten up at the one-price emporium of Gran
ville Blokes, No. 609 Chestnut street, Philade phia.
