Bid Things, —London is a great city, and
Now Yorkers regard their city as an immense munici

or them. But lf the Mayors of Nineveh and Babylon
could revisit the earth they would laugh at the preten
sions of the moderns The area of Babylon was 285
square miles, surrounded with a wall 100 feet high, 73
feet thick, with 100 brass gates; and Nineveh contained
216 square miles, surrounded with a wall 100 feet high,
and wido enough for three chariots to drive abreast.
Yet, with all this, they 'had no rondy-mado olotalng

The Invention of Carriages.— The ear

were, douktleis, inferior to an American “trotting

reign of Henry 11., 1547, and England boasted of none
