TO THE CITIZENS OF THE TIDED
11,3 CON GIIMION AL DIsTELUT.
PHILADELPHIA, October, 1882
Feeling a deep interest in the n suit of the coming
Election, we take the liberty of addressing you in
reference to the Union Congressional - Dandidate for oar
District. And we do so not as partisans, bat as citizens,
feeling that muokgreater interests are at stake in the
coming election .than those merely of party. Our
Government is in,the midst of a moat wicked rebellion,
at, twilling indeed-for its very existence, and while our
armies are battling for that Government in the field, we
feel it no less our duty to sustain it at home. Two can
didates for Congress are presented to the citizens of this
District for their support, one nominated by a Conven
tion representing only "a Political Party in opposition to
the National Administration, and the other by, a People's
Union Convention of Citizens who have declared in ail
their assemblages, both local and Stare, their deternaino•
firm to stand by the Government in efforts to suavest
this unholy rebellion. The question for to, then, to
consider is, which of these candidates shall we support 7
We think there should be bat one answer lc m every
patriotic citizen, and that is,
i 1 We will uphold and sus
tain our Government M ibis its hour of hist by, every
means in our power." If violet! to do so by a vote of
approval at our election, we jesportilze every great in-
Terest of the country, already threatened by an insolent
and unnatural foe.
We therefore earnestly and cordially ask you to sup-
Pert LEONARD'ItdYERS, the 'Union candidate for Oort
greee, and we do this the more cheerfully from the feot
that he is a man of ability, of unblemished character and
integrity, has been a resident of the district for more than
twenty years, and, we feel assured, Will, if elected, do
honor to blamedi and oreoit to hie constituents, whom he
will truly'and faithfully represent. -

The whole etory can be told in a few words, and the truth

accuracy of the account, and,-Mr. KNOX'S term of office

his term. Mr. O. gave an amicable action and confession
of judgment. The gentlemen whose names have been so

Mr. O. port of the money, receiving from hint et the tame

They have made no complaint, and the sympathy
