BY TUB BARD Or TOWER EAU,. When the . 4 Smash" lately took Their homeward track, with lowered pride, An officer, with backward look, Thus to his traitor comrade sighed: HoW oft, amid our wretched fare, I've thought of Pennsylvania farms, And hoped that soon we should be there, To taste what moat the palate charms, 4; But now adieu thosoluscions dreams Of fatted calves, and pigs, and fowls; Tbo vengefrdaword behind ne gleams, Before us wolf•like famine howls!" His comrade answered, „ Tee, 'tie true, We've missed what might have made U 3 fat, But when these ragged clothes I view, They wake more dismal thoughts than that. e. / hoped to see our beet brigade On Philadelphia plunder fall, Oh ! what a dash I should have made, Dressed out in Clothes front Tower Halt!' , A stock of ready •made Clothing, like that at Tower E all, to select from at will, would, no doubt, have been a bigblyvalued prize in the present condition of rebel wardrobes; it wee, however, prepared to supply the wants of our loyal citizens, who' are rapidly availing themselves of the unequalled opportunity now presented. In proof of this fact we would state that, for twenty•flve r ears past, the EXPECTO RANT has been before the public, and that each anc needing year has added to its popularity, and extended the demauda, until now It is known and appreciated in all quarters of the world, and admitted to be the Great Remedy of the Age for that close of Messes for wbioh it is especially designed. It should be remembered, too, that during this period hundreds of other preparations have been brought to the notice of the public, and, by extraordinary exertion on the part of their proprie tors have created a temporary sensation, and achieved a abort-lived popularity, but having no intrinsic merit to sue tain them, have einoe sunk into comparative ob scurity. It is claimed, therefore, that, having alone stood the teat of time—the sales still inoreasing—and the direct testimony of cures effected by its use accumulating on our hands, the proprietors of the EXPE OTO • RANT are justified in recommending it to the afflicted with renewed confidence, not, be it borne in mind, se a g* Cure-all," nor se being absolutely infallible In all oases, and under all circumstances, but as the best coMbination of medicines within the patch of the pub lic, calculated, in moat casee, to eradicate the various diseases for which it is commended, and in alt cases to afford Attention is a'so invited to the fact that the testimony to the curative powers of the EXPEOTORANT is not confined to the illiterate and credulous, but innumera ble persous of intelligence and character, Clergymen, Phi eicians, and others, occupying the most , prominent stations in society, too honest to impose upon others, and too sagacious to be imposed nvn themselves, not only use, but recommend it in the highest terms for the uniformity of its success in all diseases of the Pulmo nary Organs. ErrWHO IS THE TRUE MAN?-THE following Resolutions, with others, having been adopted by the Senate of this State as expressive of the sentiments of the people of Peuneylvania, were eubmitted to the House, January 22,1861, after South Carolina had ['seeded from the Union 4. Resolved, That the constitution of the United States of America ccntsius all the powt re necessary to the maintenance of its authority, and it is the solemn and most Imperative duty of the Government to adopt and carry, into effect whatever measures may be neces sary to that end ; and the faith and the power of Penn ey Ivania are hereby pledged to the support of snob mea sures, in any manner and to any extent, that may be re quired of her by the constituted authorities of the United Stately. 6. Resolved, That all plots, conspiracies, and warlike demonstrations against the United states, in any section of the country, are treasonable in their character ' tins whatever power of the Government is mcessary for their suppression should be applied to that prirpOse without hesitation or delay. On the question, Will the House agree to the same? the yeas were OS, the nays were 19 Amongst the names of those who voted against each resolution is that of GEORGE W. )3. SMITH, present caudida'e for Senator from Fourth district ? (see Lfgtstative It?cord for 1861, page 171,) while the same resolutions were supported in the Senate by GEORGE CONNELL. (See Legislative Record, page 89.) The question now is, Which of these two members represented the loyal people of Philadelphia by hl ac tion on this occasion, and who is now best entitled to their confidence? li* [a. COLONEL RIDDLE'S 'LETTER the Bul/etin, and other Repnblican newspapers, are fond of referring tots. Colonel B:ddle's letter' , as some thing very heinous and terrible. Perhaps it seemed so at the time it was published, for it was the first bold utter ance against the corruption and favoritism by which the strength of the nation was paralyzed and its life-blood drained, at the most critical period of the war, But nub segtunt developments so far exceeded anything that Col. Biddle Bard, that now his letter seems only the recital of facts known to everybody. If this be not so, let some of the hepnblican j.munele publish the letter,or at least ex tract some live or passage without garbling or misquoting it. 7be Bulletin says that Colonel Biddle oalled the war .. a black lieentillcan. job." Not very likely this, as he has take taken the field in this very war. As some reader may like to see what Colonel Biddle really did say, we quote the passage. Who will now deny a word of it 'I We would give the whole letter, but it really seems to us to have in it nothing but what is now said daily by can did, honest men of every party. The letter was published in the journals of November 28th and 29th, 1881. Speak ing of the administration of the war up to that time, Colon)! Biddle said : When the national flag wee struck down at Charles ton, ford the national capital was threatened by Secession, the North rose like one man. The world saw with aston ishment the grent uprising of the people; Europe pre judged the Issue in our favor ; yet, as if smitten with blizdness, the Republican leadere"seem striving to waste and dissipate, 'Wetted of to eelze and nae, the noble ma teriel for great armies which was, with ecarcely any limit, placed at their disposal. The soldier who Offered himself for the public service found that be must ear wig politicians before he could be allowed the privilege to fight or die for his country. Men began to say that the war was to be made a , black BePahlican lob.' ‘, Politicians were mot at the head of troops—polifi clans who thought that to wear lace and feathers and to pocket pay WSJ! the whole duty of the officer — feasting, and frolicking and speechmaking took the place of training and discipline; and, while the officer spouted end revelled, the rank and file were robbed of their that right—the right to skilful guidance and instruction. The nine were nominally put into the hands of a vene rable chieftain; but every politician, every' able editor' took a pull at them, till they upset the coach. ' , Amid shouts of On to Richmond,' the North, with its teeming population ' found itself outnumbered at every point of conflict, and the battle of Ball Run proved that the Administration bad known neither its own strength nor the enema's. Where, then, were our legions?' we may well ask of R. Bnt the battle of Ball Bun was not without eta fruits tor us." All this wee true, then ; unfortunately it did not then cease to be tree. Again and again, through the extra crdluary management of this war the North, with ite teaming population. has $ 1 found itself outnumbered at every point of conflict "—Constitutional Union. 11 PHRENOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS are made day and evening at 922 CHESTNUT tiar.a.et, by JOHN L. L. EAR itISON, Executor, o 4 set 409 BADE Street. pi EULADELPHIA, May 24 1862. JIL I hereby certify that I have been connected with the sth Massachusetts Artillery Regiment, and in Janu ary Fast got kicked bye horse on the leg, below the knee, and was placed in the hospital at Georgetown, D.C., and the wound became very bad indeed. , White thus confined With my leg, I was attacked with what the doctors called Rheumatic Fever, at which lime I took a great deal of medicine, and was much reduced. In March last I was brought to'this city (Philadelphia), and placed in the hos pital, where I remained till the 21st of May, just four days ago today, when a fellow-soldier took me and in troduced me to Dr Stevens, N 0.1418 B. Pennitiquare who, he said, had entirely cured him of very serious &Lent ties, and who has actually cured me with only three treat ments of Etectro Magnetism, without a particle of medi cine. When I went to him I was in great pain, both from my leg and back ; could not walk without a cane, and very lame at that; my whole spine exceedingly ten der, with ranch inflammation and soreness on my kidneys. The very first Ii eat ment gave apparent relief That, with only two anbseenent treatments, did me more good than all the medicines and other applications I had taken for months before—in fact, cured me entirety; as my pains are all gone, and my lameness too, and am feeling &st rata. May many others, aside from poor soldiers, with aches and pains Ott medicine can't care, go to Dr. Stevens for relief; for / am quite certain that I !mould . have Dem confined here still for weeks, perhaps moths to come, had it not been for bis treatment; whereas I am now all right, and start to morrow for my New England home.
