The Bales made by Messrs. Wood & Oary, yesterday,
were probably little short of their most crowded ig 0 pen

mainly to those who attend from mere curiosity.
Their wholesale rooms, which we may state wore never
so splendidly • stocked - se now, were also thronged
throrghout the day, with persons in the trade, both from
the city and country, and the freedom with which they
purchastd wee no mean evidence that wet weather, al
though dampening, is not teoesearily an extinguisher
even of Millinery " Openings."
A LARGE STOCK OF Funs.--We invite at

to meet the demands of his patrons and the public in

STATUES AND MONTIMENTS.—In London there
are six public etetnea to kings, but ono to amen of aciencc,
(Dr. Jenner), and none to single author, artist, pout, in
ventor, or engineer. In this country we L , go in' , for
utility, and wo have !statues and monumelts illustrating
this idea. One of the proudest busintas monuments that
Philadelphia oan boast of is the Brown. Stone Olotbing
Hall of RockhiU & Wilson, NOL , . 603 and 605 Chestnut
etreot, above Sixth. Here art, capital, and industry
combine to furnish the nation with faultlaes suits for
civilians, and uniforms for its soldiers.
.TILE MISSILES AT ANTIETAAI.-- 41 I have
been ciedibly informed that broken railroad iron and
blacksmith's tools, hammers,' chisels, &o_, were' fired wt
us from rebel cannon. These 11:1iFailt.S made a peculiar
noise, by which our men came to distinguish them faun
regu ar shot, and as they heard them approaching would
cry turkey ! turkey coming !, and fall, flat on their
face to avid them. One artillerist said Le expected the
blacksmith shop next. From the looks of the re >els
when they left the field one would have thought they
used their clothes fora adding. They expected, however,
to replenish their tools from the machine shops of Pella
delphia, and their clothes from Stokes' ens-price, nuder
the Continental."
WONDERS OF TILE- TELEGRAPH.— A. wonder
ful loaf of telegraphing was executed at a telegraphic
spites gtven by Mr. Gurney, in Lond.m. The wires of
the different telegraph companies wore brought into Mr.
Gurney's house. An unbroken circuit of wire, 5,090
miles in length, was then formed, and through this groat
dietence the electric message was flashed in the space of
two secomis. The following message was also transmitted
in the ehort spare of one minute: }any your tail and
winter garments at the oue•priee fashionable Clothing
Imptrium of Granville Stokes, Igo. 609 Chestnut street,
Philadelphia." We can only add that by so doing you
will save at least 25 per cent.
