The demand for gold still continues, at about the name
rate as yesterday. Many parties are still anxious to pro
vide thernielves against the fancied wreck of onr com
mercial system, and consequently the figure is kept nO.
The favorable news now coming to us would at any other
time have sent specie down bill at a very swift pace, but
the rebels are a little too near just now to render matters
entirely secure. The demand for custom-horuse treasury
notes, in New York, yesterday and to-day, kaa had the
effect of advancing their value. They were very firm
during the forenoon at 109, advancing before the close to
109 x, at which figure they closed. money Is becoming
excessively plenty again, and the rate would' Inevitably
sink below 4 per cent. if the Government did not guaran

The stock market was considerably elated today over

the following communication from that gentleman was
received and read :
To Algernon S. Roberts, President of a meeting of citt r
sena of the .Eighth Legislative District;
Dsaa SIR t--Your favor or the 9th instant, informing
me of the proceedings of a meeting of citizens, irrespec
tive of party. has been received and considered.
The only objection to accepting the 'nomination that
bee been offered me is, that another person 653 been nomi
nated for the same office, and the Question is, whether I
am bound to abide by that nomination.
Hovever varied may 'be oar opinions as-to the correct
ness of that principle as a general rule of conduct, there
are manifestly many circumstances that not only autho
rize. but demand, a departure from that rule.
Witheat multiplying examples, it is enough to say that
the action of any convention that is controlled by dele
gates fraudulently returned, is without binding autho
rity, and should be repudiated by every right-minded
citizen
In the recent primary elections, 'conducted without the
sanctions of an oath or the fear of a penalty,-there were,
in certain precincts of the Tenth ward, the most gross
and glaring frauds, the proofs of which I will hereafter
give to the voters of the district in detail.
There frauds changed the entire complexion of the
Ooovention; and brought about results in direct contra
vention of the expressed will of a majority of the legal
voters of the district. Under thee. circumstances I can
no more recognize the validity of such a nomination than
I could the legality of a forged note.
It this were an experiment tried for the first time, it
might pass without notice; but it has for years b een
practised here and elsewhere, until it has culminated in
the overwhelming calamity that has brought our noun
y to the verge of ruin ; and these frauds must now be
stoned, at any cod of unjust sod obnoxious precedents-
at any sacrifice of personal preferences.
That I may assist in this work. I accept your nomina
tion, and throw myself upon the suffrages of the citizens
of the district without distinction of party. If they elect
me. I will serve them with all my ability. It lam not
elected, I shall hese the eatiefaction of knowing that I
have attempted • the vindication of their rights and my
Own.
