The Louisville Journal, of Tuesday, alluding to the
mosey interests of that city, saga :
“ I I here was a material advance in the rates for gold
yesterday, the bankers buying at 17 Per cent 'premium
and selling at 20, with a fair demand. There was no
change in other matters pertaining to money, the baying
rate remaining at Be 9 per cont. premium, and the selling
price at 10012 per cent. A small amnia( of the Postage
waren CMTCLICY was received by our bankers yesterday,
Widob they bald at a premium of 203 per ant . Demand
Treasury rotes were saleable at 666 X per cent. pre
'minni, the bankers not being disposed to Obit. There is
little doing in Eastern exchange, the buying rate being
per Cent discount, and the selling rate par to , per
cent. peecnintu.”
The New York Evening Post of today says:
Wall street bas almost entirely recovered from the
' 4 scare" of yesterday, and the stock exchange r-sponds
to the better feeling with an advance.of •X el %' cent.
on the low points of the panic produced by the stories
irem Philadelphia and Baltimore. Tim improvement its
stocks is stiffittlited by the baste of operators to buy
back shares thrown neon the in .rket during the excite
ment and doubt of yesterday, and at the close there is a
wrong demand at NI prices.
As a part of the gossip of tho street, it is worthy of
note that a rumor is verrturreat that General lElllllOOk
has taken the position of Secretary of War, and that Kr.
Stanton has resigned. The stack-j. , bbers seem to have
the information exclusively, as there is no trustworthy
11.te111gence from Washington to teat, effect.
Southern State stocks are weak, especially Tennqessees,
which are 1 per cent. lower. Ilitnots bonds are steady
at former prices. Okdos are scarce and wanted at
1060108.
The Government list is strong, and the SUNS - Of 1881
have returned to par, after Kontos yesterday se low as
OSX tette. Sake were reported at 98X, but we were un
able to trace them. The closing sales are at loaning.
The 7.80 notes are also a trifle firmer. The Fives of 1874
remain gala at yesterday's prices.
Dutiable demand notes are giiet but steady, at 1080.
108 h; per cent. Six per cent certificat.ea are firm at 98N .
Yesterday noon large purchases like made on Phila..
delphis account at 980983( .
The foreign exohange . drawers have lowered their
rates about one per cent., but in the absence of a free
supply of outside bills there is no pre-tenre to sell There
is little or nothing doing ea , yet for Saturday's mail.
First. class bills on London are quoted at 1290120.
