Tie Cincinnati Daily Commercial of July 31, speak
ing of specie affairs in that city, says ■
There was a considerable amount of gold put on the
market here to-day by parties who had returned with it
from Tennessee, where, under the late order prohibiting
the disbursement of it, they were unable to use it lots
which, a few weeks ago, had been purchased at 18©2Q
premium, were Bold at 23% ©l4 premium. The having
range at bank was from 22 to 24 premium, with 23© 23%
premium as the figures at which most of the purchases
were made. There was but little counter demand for it,
and a selling rate is difficult to came fairly. We give it
nominally at 15 premium. ■
The demand notes were purchased at 4,4% ®4% pre
mium . Most of the bankers are willing to al ow no more
than 4 premium.
Silver is bandied with less interest One of the princi
pal dealers in it is now not disposed to allow more than 5
premium.
Exchange was in rather better demand to-day, but is
still easy.
There is but a moderate inquiry for money. Southern
money is placed at rather easier rates of disc junt by
seme of the barkers, in view of its probable use lathe
purchase of cotton, now that gold is inhibited from pay
ment therefor.

DISTRICT ATTORNEY-—TO THE
!L§ FRIENDS OB’THE NATIONAL ADMINIS
TRATION IN PHILADELPHIA:
My nomination, last fall, for Associate Judge'of the
District Court; to the exclusion of Judge Stroud, was the
occasion of an exoitement which threatened to defeat the
whole ticket, and with a view to obviate such a resale,
I was strongly urged to withdraw for Hie purpose of re
storing hartn©n> to the party. Net desiring to be an in
strumentality of discord at a time when It was the plain
duty of every loyal man to sacrifice personal considera
tions for the general good, I reque-ted the Convention to
reaest jnblo, and tendered back to it the nomination with
which it bad honored me. The result wee that Judge
Stroud was Dominated as my successor, and our whole
judicial ticket- elected. No sooner had I withdrawn than
it was generally conceded that, in return for sacrificing
my char ces of an election for the general benefit of the
party, I should be nominated at the ensuiog election
for DISTRICT ATTORNEY. Such was the general
desire that, bad the nomination been then made, I hazard
little in saying it would have been conferred upon me, if
not unanimously, at least by an overwhelming majority.
If, under such circumstances, yon still deem mo worthy
of the nomination, and as thß time is near at hand when
you will be caked upon to bestow ifc on Bomeone, I will
be pleased to have it conferred upon me. Should you,
however, considering the embarrassed oondition of our
country, be cf the opinion that the general interest wilt
be better subserved by the-selection of another, I shall
cheerfully acquiesce in the result.
Truly voure,,. AMOS BRIGGS.
