Petroleum.—During the past two Weeks a considerable degree of activity has prevailed In the shipment of this article, and tlxe exports have been moderately heavy. It Is enrr- ntly stated that onr pre gent oil-producing wells are rapidly decreasing. Since December last the wells on Oil creek have decreased tal ly 80 per cent. The flow from other wells has also sud denly stopped, but whether this stoppage will be perma nent or rot it is not stated. Petroleum belongs to an extensive family* ancient as the hills, and honorable in history, whose surname is bitumen. It has mixed and mingled with earthy matters, with fluids and with gases, till there's a fine tribe of half-bloods indeed, aodit is hard work to tell who's Who, In a pure state, however, they may he confined to four varieties. The most solid, which varies from the hardness of stone to the elasticity allodia robber, la bitumen proper: the next in density, more plastic and pitchy* in aspnaltuoi ; the third, a thick fluid, is petroleum; the la*t and most liquid is naptha,' £ Oil springs were undoubtedly first discovered in this 'Country by the Indians of tbe Six Nations, as history ptatOß that they seem to have collected it chiefly from the surface and banks of two streams, both of which af terwards received the name of Oil creek, one batng in Allegbi ny county, New York, and the other being in Ve nango county, Pennsylvania. Along the border* of the latter, there may still be seen the remains of ancient pits, which most have been dug by thorn to catch the exuding petroleum; and occasionally a notched pole is found in them, by which they probably wont up and down into tbe pit, as notched poles pass for ladders among savages everywhere. Thelndlans employed the oil for mediotl purposes and in many religious ceremonies, but the chief life of the petroleum was in mixing the rude paints with which they adorned themselves for peace, or made them selves a shade more hideous for war: This oil was also Gold to the early settlers by the Indians, for rheumatism and other purposes. . . \ < It is oUy a few years ago since the real value of this article was discovered, Ttio Canada district has sur passed all others in the immense amounts it has produced, as well oe in the quality of its products. Its greater weight gives it a higher, value than that of other districts, as the heavy oils are more valuable for distillation. The wells are situated in low, swampy land, not more than fifty miles from Detroit. It Es said that there Is already more American than British "money invested there, and more Michigan men than Oaaa lians at work* In some of the localities the surface Is found to be covered with a stratum of hardened aspbaltum, two feet in thick-- pleas; in others, the ground is submerged to the depth of several inches with the snrptus oil from the great wells, £Ebe roads, the wharves, tbe depots, the warshouses everywhere wUbin reach of the great oil regions of Canaria or Pennsylvania have been blocked up; and filled to fu loess, with the vast amounts of oil waiting for trans portation, The extent of this mighty ocean of oil may be better Understood, when we remember that the entire product of onr whale fishery in one of its meat prolific years, was not quite four hundred and thirty thousand barrels of ppetm end whale oil together. ' ' ; It may be safely predicted that the petroleum will have fin immense, effect upon the artß and industry of the world,; already In its infancy, It has been applied to.va rfou#purpbaeß with great success. It furnishes a gas far snore brilliant than that produced from the coal; ma chinery oils of several kinds are obtained from it; wax, for making candles, and tho bases of many brilliant dyes, are taken from the process of distillation. It is .being daily experimented with, more and more, and a thousand new uses are prophesied for it. Speculators and com missioned merchants, hoopers and coopers, railroad com panies, end cart men, have had a flourishing time o! it. Shameful Desertion of Soldiers. ? Prices generally are #®*>£per cent, higher, especially In New York Cen tral ana Galena and Chicago. There are no minors agitating these stocks at present, and the fluctu ations are consequently very slight. • New York State stocks are selling at fall prices. The, sevens of 1870 were sold as high as 119®219X, the sizes of 1874 at 117. The market for railroad bonds is very firm on the choice mortgages, such as the first and second bonds of the New York Central, Erie, Hudson, Harlem, Michi gan New Jersey Genual, and Galena and Chi cago Companies. The low-priced bonds are rather dull, particularly the issues of the Chicago and Northwestern, and Cleveland and Pittsburg Companies. ~ The Government list shows no material change. . The supply of money is easy at sffl6 per cent, on first-class collaterals, with more doing at 5. The banks are not lending freely even at 6 per cent. Moßt of the large foreign houses are alsolesding sparing ly, except on gold and exchange bills. The gold market is dull to- day, and rates per cent, lower.
