Mr. Boker’s Poem on Conrad.
In our recent notice of Mr.'Boker’s edition
of « Conrad’s Devotional Poems,” we quoted
two stanzas from the introductory poem of
Mr. Boker, dedicating the volume to Judges
Conrad’s mother, and, by inadvertence, at
tributed them to Mr. Curtis. We now, make
the correction, and, in doing so, take the
liberty of reprinting the whole of Mr, Boker’s
poem. It is a proper tribute to the memory
of the gifted dead, and one of its author’s most
beautiful and finished productions:
Prom thee, pure source of Codrad's birth,
Arose his virtues'; through thee ran
Whatever heavenly gleams of worth
Above us dignified the man.
By thee his childish soul was taught, :
His nobler instincts brought in play,
That, while with darkened/days he fought,
Plashed outward through his mortal clay.
What if they cry, who pry and probe,
.“Bo! here a speck and there a flaw!”
He scorned the dust upon his robe
Par more than any one who saw.
The dust he gathered on his path / * ;
Was common dust,—what skirt Is clear ?
Ho shook it off, in holy wrath,
Ere to God’s presence he drew near.
0 merciful and patient God,
We trust these songs of faith and loya
Pleading for him beneath the sod,
Have moved as only song dan move!
And that the soul Thy bounteous hands
Gave to his mother, free from stain, '
Before Thy face transfigured stands, V
Prom tainting earth washed pure again;
So that she, too, may come before
Thy mercy seat quite reconciled, ■
And to her bosom take once more
The early memory of her child!
I, as he wished, and in his name, ,
To thee, whose love o’er'ruled his fate,
This last, best chaplet of his fame.
Thus solemnly do dedicate. f

The Valor of Rush’s .Lancers Vindicated.
[We are permitted to condense; the following

were .. circulated respecting this admirably-disei-’i

Ak*[T or the Potomac, July 14, 1882.
And so the Philadelphia people believe that we
ren away. Shame! ' Let them ask the New York,
Massachusetts, and Connecticut regiments, 'who
saw us in the engagement. On Friday, when the
ball opened on the right wing of the army, Gen.
had charge of the Cavalry Reserves,(and
while our regiment was supporting a battery of re
gular artillery, a charge was ordered by the rest
of. the Reserves. The sth United States Cavalry
charged up a hill, and dose behind them the Pro
vost Guard of the division, made up of a detail
from all- the-'regiments in the Reserve Division,
eight Lancers only being our quota. The sth'
were shot to pieces before they reached the enemy.
A brigade supported the artillery,' and the poor
Provost Guard, not forty in ail, came tumbling
down the hill with what was left of the sth, and
the whole squad-was so badly shared that they rode
over one of our own guns. A frightened.gen.ofal
then said that the “ Lancers had . run away,” and.
that one of them had nearly rode him down. The
fact was the general was scared, and between that.
and the dust, the noise, and the eight poor fellows
with lances, who did run away with the sth Ca
valry and the IJrovost Guard, were magnified into
a regiment, while the regiment in reality was Way

hard case when men have done their duty .well, to
have their reputation taken from them for t&e pur
pose of shielding the regular oavalry;;who do not
eompare with ns for discipline, drill, ornoolness in

and the officers have faith in their men, and tint is
the reason why they supported Robinson’s

As for the horrora of .war; I have, seen my share.-
The dead and wounded were a speotaole, but the
way the living fought was terrible beyond dSsorip
tion. The rebels were, sent into battte with:oa teens
of whisky—drunk. Prisoners have told urthit the
whisky barrels were opened, and they were oi iered
to drink their fill and then to fill their canteens;
consequently, they fought like madmen, advateihg'
their-Sines (four deep) right in the face of rifldmot,
canister, and grape, that mowed them downin p es.
They were driven bick for mi'es at the point o| the
bayonet. Sometimes they pressed so closely toon
our guns as to clog their movements. Qnermel
lieutenant jumped astride one of our guns from the.
front j and with his pistol shot the gunner, whdi'a-

where occurred the great artillery fight, the pms
were literally muzzle to muzzle, and in-the flick

■We are m statu quo ,• as Yet; at this place . " Heavy
reinforcements are oontinually arriving, and part
ofithe division: of General Hunter hare gone into
camp ft short distance to the rear of this division..
Among those newly, arrived, additions to the corps;
diarmifi are the 50th:Eegiment, lOOth or Round
head, of'Pennsylvania, and ,79th{ Highlanders, of,
Hew York. How long we are to remain here is not
definite: The probabilities are that if 'we do march"
upon “ The City of Sovon Hills,” it will be with a
crushing, overwhelming, not to-be-withstood fbree.
Events are centreing, but will not develop them
selves for a short period. Meanwhile, the Union
men of the North must patiently wait, watch, and:
render all the, assistance in their, power by using,
their Influence and time in hastening enlistments.
Men of the “.Old Keystone State,”" stand by the

THE WEATHER
The weather here is deoidedly hot, and the men

not of a dangerous nature. ;

We have proof that, of thedelicaeies forwarded by

below this point, in'fine health and spirits, and the
quartermaster is now in Memphis after supplies.
Thus ends the anxiety and concern which has been
