Yesterday was the warmest day we have had this year.
The mercury readied 96# degrees in the shade at three
o’clock in the afternoon. Several persons wore over
come by the heat, and considerable ont door work had to
be suspended. The warmest day last year was on July
Bthj when the thermometer reached 99 degrees at noon.
Arrival of Pick and Wounded
SOLDIFUB kVROU THE PENINSULA —Yesterday
moraiug. at an early hour) the sttamsr Daniel Webster,
Captmn Wood, arrived at this port, and hauled m at
CsllowhlU'Btreet wharf. She brought 313 sick and
wound' d soldiers from the late battle- holds on the penin
sula. Those on board the Webster left Fortress Mon
roe on Friday last, in the State of .-Maine.. The latter
vessel, however, broke down when twenty* five miles out
from the Fortress, and wai forced to put back. Fart of
her cargo was then transferred to the Webster, and she
left Fortress Mcnroe on Sunday last. The boat was in
charge of Acting Assistant Surgeois Drs. A. G. B.
Hinkle and R. O. Eckstein. There were also *severa
TOluntetr surgeons and a corps of active female volun
teer nurses on board, who did much to alleviate the suf
ferings of the gallant fellows. The list of those on board

among Whom were Lieut. H Oscar - Roberts and Quar
termaster Haviland, of Gosllne’s Zouaves. Captain J. E.
Montgomery was al>o on board. Also, Lient. Thomas /.
Bl&keney, of the California Regiment, aid te Gen. Burns,
who was wounded during the late battle. Lieut. Tait, of
the 10th New York, is also on the list. He was wounded
in the shoutder at Gaines’Hill.
Captain Montgomery is wounded In the thigh, a Mmie*
rifle ball passing through the fl?shy of the leg, ■
escaping the bone, and Inflicting a painful but not dan
gerous wound.
Lieutenant Roberts, of. the 95th Pennsylvania (Gcb*
line’s Zouaves), remained upon the fletd after his regi
ment had retired oh the Friday that the fight raged.
While helping a wounded comrade from the front he re
ceived a hall, which pasted through the breast of his coat,
aod, entering his left arm near the shoulder, It passed
through the limb, causing a flesh wound.
A few minntea afterwards be was In the act of helping
another wounded man*off, when a bail struck him iu the
fleshy part of the right thigh passing through it,' but for
timately without touching the bone. Mr. Roberts was
removed to hls home in the Twenty-second ward. He
declares his intention of rejoining his regiment as sooa
as bis wounds wiil pern it.
Quarteimaster Haviland la not wounded, but he is
very HI.
Both Messrs lUvitand and Roberts state, that to their
positive knowledge, Colonel GoJine and Major Hubbs of
the 96th Regiment, are dead. Major Hubbs wm shot ip
the region of the neck, and a ball passed , through the
chest of Gc looel Goaline.
On the arrival of the Webster, yesterday morning, the
alarm bell was struck by the Northern Liberty Engine
Company, according to previous arrangement. By the
time the boat touched the wharf there were a number of
volunteers on the ground with stretchers, wagons, Ac,
to remove the wounded men to the hospitals, A number
of ladies were also present with such refreshments as the
men were most.in need of.
Efficient arrangemmfcs were made at an early hour,
under Chief of Police Buggies, and Lieut. Franks, of the
Seventh district, to have ibe brave fellows removed to
the different military hospitals. This was quietly ac
com pushed during the morning. Quite » large crowd of
people were on the wharf whi o the removal waa go
ing on.
The New Municipal Boards.
Yesterday was the time fixed by law for the organiza
tion of the Controllers of the Public Schools, Guardians.

The m*eting was called to order by Mr. Freeborn,
upon whose motion George I. Riche took the chair. Mr.
Wm. J. Reed was chosen secretary.

The Board then went into an election for president.
Mr. Leech nominated Thomas G. H .>Uing«worth.
Mr. Freeborn nominated Leonard R. Fiotcber.
. A ballot was Lfatn taken with the following result:
Fletcher 13; Hollingsworth 11.
Mr. Fletcher was then declared duly elected president.
Upon taking the chair be said :
1 return you my sincere thanks for the honor you have
conferred upon mo on this occasion. It is truly an honor
to preside over the Board of Education o'' the city of
Philadelphia. I cannot, for a moment, flatter myself
tb&t my election is owingto anything in myself. I at
tribute it entirely to the cnmse pursued by myself in en
deavoring to produce a reform in this board. Thanking
you for the kindness, I accept it.
The election for secretary being next In order, Messrs,
James D. Campbell and Robert J. Hemphill were placed
in nomiDarion. A communication signed Daniel J. Cor
coran, submitting his name' for secretary, warialso read.
The communication stated that the writer had always
been a decided party man. .
Mr. Campbell received 13 votes, and Mr. HemphiU 12
votes. Mr. Campbell was thereupon declared elected.
Messrs. Rich 6 and Flitcraft were then appointed a
committee to waii upon the Mayor and request him to
administer the oath to the members.
The board then took a brief recess. Upon reassem
blin# Mayor Henry was introduced, and the memoers
were sworn in.
On motion, a committee was appointed to revise the
by-laws.
The board then adjourned. :
BOARD OF HEALTH.
The members of the board assembled yesterday morn
ing. There was no election of offioers, however. The
board will meet again to day.
BOARD OF attARMAHS OF THB POOR
A meeting of the Board of Guardians of the Poor was
held yesteiday afternoon at the office on Seventh street,
to organize for the ensuing year.
The following new members appeared, were qualified
and took their seats:
Henry Haines, appointed by the District Court, Ste
phen Taylor, reappointed by the Supreme Court, John
H. Mails, reappointed by the Court of Common Pleas,
and James D. Brown, elected by Councils.
On motion of Mr. Bervtr, Mr. Ereiy wal elected tem
porary chaiimsn.
The credentials of the new members were then read.
On motion, nominations were inade for president, as
follows: John Mr Maris and Siepheu Taylor.
Mr. Tavior declined, and there beiog no other candi
date John M. Maris was declared the President of the
Board of Guardians of the Poor for the emuing year.
Hr. Marls thanked the Board for the honor conferred
upon him in a few neat remarks
On motion, the rules were suspended for the purpose
of electing a secretary.'
Charles T. Miller was nominated for secretary, and'
being the only candidate was re-elected Secretary of the
Board.

Military Hospital Matters —The
contributions of our citizens to the army hospitals Isere
are of the most varied and liberal character, and every
body seems desirous of doing something for the relief of
-the patients. A few days ago a subscription paper waa
, JD tbo Philadelphia Club, corner of Thirteenth
and Walnut streets. Although moat of the members had
already given largely, and many are now out of town,
the tnbscrlptions already exceed twenty-two hundred
collars This sum is to be expanded by a committee in
the purchase of such articles as are most needed in the'
different hospitals.

Broad-street Hospital. —It has
been elated by some of the soldiers that the officers in
the Broad-street Hospital do sot pursue a proper course
in regard to the government of the different branches of
the hospitil department. It may be well to state that the
report is incorrect, and is altogether without foundation.

sick and wounded, by our patriotic ladles, are appro
priated by the officers, Sueh shameful conduct should
not be tolerated, and tbueo specimens of humanity who
would rob a sick or wounded soldier, who has loft bis
home to fight our country’s battles, of any delicacy that
has been prepared for them, deserves a traitor’s rewird,
and should be bold in contempt by a]l lover 3 of humanly,
freeaonj, and henevolenco.
Belief to the Families op Voltjn-
TREES.—It has been suggested to Councils as to the
propriety of discontinuing the relief now extended by
the city to the families of volunteers. The preseot fund
is nearly esbauated, and it is proposed ta create a fnrthor
loan of 5300.000 for this purpose. There is a balance of
about $BO,OOO remaining of the Defence Fund, and it la
proposed to devote $50,000 of this to tbe families of volua

Convalescent Soldiers.—lt is ex

arrivals of sick and wounded soldiers. A numbsr from
Baxter’s Ffio Zouaves arrived on Sunday evening. The
large hospital at Forty-third and Spruce streets, West
Philadelphia, is now ready for the reception of a Urge
number. During the week there will be a rieartog out 4 of
the hospitals. Y*ry many of the man. are convalescent,
ard will be forwarded to their regiments. From 1,20 i
to 2,000 are cow ready to go. The men tbemselvea ap
pear very anxious to return.

Diseases Among Swine.—We learn
tbattbe><bog cholera I .’ has made tis appe&raace in our
adjaeent counties. It is said thata trader iu from
Ohio, recently brought a lot here, and sold them to
farmers in the lower part of Chester, and othor parts of
tbe State. These hogs were afflicted with what Is kaown
as the “ hog cholora,” and, as a consequence, many of
them died after coming in poßpession of their new ownerj.
This disease is said to be more fatal than pleuro-pneuma
nia, so dreaded by cattle*dealers.

Died of Starvation.—Yesterday
morning, about eight ; o’clock, an unknown German
woman tell dead in Conn’s court, near Front and Tnomp
son streats, in the Seventeenth ward. She had been a
ledger in the Seveotesatb ward station for the last two
or three nights preceding her death. Yesterday morn
ing the informed one of the officers that she had nothing
to eat for four days. After leaving the station-house
tdbe went to Conn’s court, and the neighbors furnished
her with coffee, bread, etc., which she devoured very
eagerly. Immediately after, she fell to the ground and
expired. Her remains wera taken to the station, and the
coroner was notified to hold an inquest. • .

Military Matters in. Camden.—The
Fourth New Jersey Regiment, which Buffered v*ry se
verely in the recent battles before Richmond, .was re-:
crulted in this city, and most of its members belonged in
our sister city. The fact that the regiment suffered so
severely, and the uncertainty as to the face- of many
of its members, have most painful feeling of
suspense and anxiety la Camden.
