quies of the late Colonel Charles Eliot, Jr., commander of

more.
A native of Pennsylvania, he was reared in and near
this city. , In his early Tenth he visited Earned, &odd li
vened over much of it on foot, devoting his time to the
study of Midge architecture and the kindred branches
of civil engineering, in whigli be subsequently became
most tighly distinguished.
On the be out of the present rebellion be urged
upon the Government the constrection of steam Iron-clad
rams for the defence of our Weetern rivers, and was
commissioned by the President to organise and command
a fleet or such 'weds. Wilt, his untiring energy he soon
completed bin fleet, organized his crews, and, in com
mand of it, he descended the ;Mississippi river, and took
a most active and decisive part in the naval action with
the rebel fftet before 'Remade
In this battle the value of steam rams for naval war
fare wan again illustrated in the most conoideueus man
ner,hnt It was at the expense of the life of their distin
guished Commander, v lit i; severely w .unded In the action,
was taken to Cairo, where be yielded hie life on the 21st
instant. Victory crowned his efforts, the nation rejoiced
in the suttees of his brilliant genius, but Pennsylvania
laments the loss of, anotber of her most gifted nuns. His
remains having Nen brought here for Interment, it is
ordered:
1. That they tic in state on Friday next in Independence
Ball, between the hours of 9 o'clock A. M., and 8 o'clock
P. M..
2. Company B, of the let Begintent of Artillery, is de
tailed ea the Body Guard of the r 019111129. Oaptaia Heet'•
tea, will report to these Headquarters for Instructions.
3. The 2d Regitntnt of Infantry, Lieutenant Oolonal
Ilienklmet, commending, is detailed as the funeral escort.

same were surrendered by him, canceled, and new testae
patent Issued on his amended apecificidon dated the
12th day of February, 1850 ; which last letters were also
surrendered by him, canceled, and new letter, patent is
sued on his second amended specification bearing date
the 9th day- of December, 1860, for an improvement In
Curry Combs for seven years front the expiration of said
patent, which takes place on the 13th day of March,

the Patent Office on MONDAY, the 16th day of FEBRU
