The miner's perils are often greater than those of the battle-field.—Szerra Nem. A BTAMTEDE.—Thestalipide from the southern Counties of Oregon for the new mines amounts to a depopulation of the ooybtry, and it is likely that many settlements, if ner'whole towns, will become actually tenantless fivfm the panic. No wonder, if they believe the stories of $500,000 a day _from a single claim, published from the Dallas Moun eafneer in the some issue of the Times.—Portletrul (Oregon) Times. FRASER RIVER.—The steamer Enterprise 'ar. rived yesterday morning from Fraser River, with twelve passengers and a small amount of treasure. There is no later news from above. .Most of the miners have left New Westminster for Lytton and Lillooet. Great complaint is made against the merchants on both routes beeause of their notion in sending forward tools and liquors at a time when the neoes series of life are so scarce, and threats to stave kegs containing spirits are not unfrequently heard from baltstarved miners who anxiously await the arrival of provisions to enable them to prosecute their journey to the mines —Colonin, May 7. Tun BUMMILDT Mmes.—The Silver Ag_e of May 9th lola the following items from' the Hum boldt country: • The mines are still holding out sufficient induce ments to keep the old settlers at home and induce emigration to flow in rapidly. Many • new loads have been streak, and work on the old ones is now being prosecuted as viorously as the facility of the country will admit. The Ben Franklin," in Star district, have struck it rich. After running their tunnel in some distance, and not finding what they desired, they turned bank and commenced work on what they supposed to be a spur of the lead of which they were in pursuit' but 10, and beheld ! the spur proved to be the hoots file ledge, and shows the mineral to the width of somo five feet. Silver predominates. It is now supposed that this claim will compare favorably with any other in the Territory. A serious sooident occurred in Santa Clara dis trict lest week, by which a miner named Williams lost his life: An old pistol had been carelessly placed in a roll of blankets which Williams took up, when the pistol dropped to the floor and was discharged by the hammer striking first, the ball bitting Williams in the thigh or groin, and passing upward through his lungs, causing his death 'in some eight hours after the occurrence. The de ceaeed was an old soldier in the Mexican war, having gone through many of the well-contested battles of that campaign. At the time of his death he was the mining partner of A J. Simmons. The Humboldt river is still very high, and causes Some inconvenience, but has produced no disas trous results. The ferry over the Slough is now in working order and horses and wagons cross upon the hosts. Immigrants are arriving daily and some four or five wagons have gone in from honey Lake and other points. Provisions and nearly all the necessaries of life are becoming scarce on the Humboldt. Nothing in this line is abundant. The influx, of people has reduced the supplies rapidly. Clothing of a suit able character is also growing scarce. Persons go ing there From here, and especially frott should take with them such supplies as they know will be most needed. The roads loading into the country have been and are yet In an unfavorable coudition ; so much so that freight oanoot and will not bo taken in - abundantly for some weeks yet; and the only way in which immigrants can make a sure' thing on plenty of grub will be by taking it In with them. Ricn.—As another evidence that the mines are giving out," we would state that on Saturday eve ning last. Mr. Cropeey—one of the owners of the India lubber tunnel and hydraulic claim, at the Gardens near Forest Hill—brought to our office a nugget of pure gold, weighing thirty ounces,-which was that day washed out of their claim by by- , &antic process. For two weeks' work the India Robber yielded the snug sum of five thousand dol lars ! The mines still continue to ,` give out " notwithstanding hundreds of gold-seekers from California are fleeing to the North, as flocks of wild geese are wont to migrate in spring-time.— Forest Hal Courier. ATTEMPT TO BREAK JAIL.—We learn from a gen tlemen who arrived in town from Orovillo yester day, that a.desperate attempt to break jail was made at Chet place lest Tuesday night by Patter lain, the Chico stage robber, arrested in this pity • lest winter and lately sentenced to State prison for ten years for highway robbery. It appears that one Leonard, sentenced to the State prison for two years for mayhem, was sent out on Monday for a box of lime, to be used to whitewash the inside of the jail, and managed 'to con ceal an axe in the box, mid gave the tool to Pat tenon, who dug his way out of the cell in which ho was confined, and then gave the axe to one Harmon, a horse thief, who dug his way out, and the two then liberated the prisoners. The party stood ready to seize and bind the jailor when he should come in on the following morning, as they were yet inside of the prison doors and in the hall or vesti bule of the jail. • When the jailor came in they seized and gagged him, but not so soon but he wail able to shout murder" right lustily. and Sheriff Middleton, being near at hand, cause to his relief, and with his revolver, soon brought the insurgents to terms, and they unlocked the outer door, which they had closed after the jailor went in, and meekly crawled back to their cells through the holes which they bad made, the sheriff refusing to unlock the doors for them. Patterson, who was the leading spirit in the attempt, is a desperate fel- ' low, having been in an innumerable variety of ex ploits. After the Chico stage robbery; of which his share was several thousand dollars, lie went to the Atlantic States and led a high life. He says he was in the battle of Bull Run, and when in this city told a number of inoideuts concerning the battle with such circumstantiality as to make his story probable. Ten years in the State prison, if he serves it out, will be likely to curb his ambition somewhat.—lllarysville Appeal. A KANAKA CONyuNtry Is CALTFORNIA.—A gen tleman who has resided !egg in the Hawaiian Islands, writes thus from Indian Creek, El Dorado county : I found here twenty-four Kanakas, principally Hawaiians, and two from the South Seas ; two Ha waiian women, three Indian women, of the ',Dig ger" race, and four half-Indian children. At this I was not surprised. But I was not prepared to find two of the Indies women speaking Hawaiian very correctly, all of them dressing neatly, cutt'ng. sewing, washing, and ironing their own and their husbands' and children's chiles) ; to find ono of them reading the Hawaiian Bible very intelligently, as does also the oldest child, a girl of eight or ten years; to find two of these " Digger" women taking part in prayer meetings, expressing regrets at their former ignorance, and pity for their ignorant rela tives; and to find them all desirous to learn more. I was not prepared to find one of the host of their dwelling houses set &pert exclusively for religious worshii.—Cosred, seated with backless benohoe, with a table at one end for the speaker; to find the natives holding early morning and evening moot ings every week day, besides seven district meet ings on tunday, and one Thursday afternoon meeting; and to find that for a few weeks past they have kept up an afternoon singing.school. bloat of their dwelling houses are quite rough, but Kamm, perhaps the most substantial Hawaiian Christian iu California, I found living in a neat lit tle clapboard house put up by Monett*, paint ed outside and in, and two of the rooms neat ly papered. I have not found a more inte resting community since coming to California. Two •of the Indian women speak Hawaiian al together. One of them reads it with considerable ease and (tenseness, joins la the singing, takes pert .in the prayer meetings, and prays in secret. She has just been taken down with ,she small-pox. r_ shall earnestly plead that, she may not be taken away mow., She is the mother of three bright chil dren—one now at Rilo, Sandwich Islands. The eldest ohild, a girl of eight or ten years, they say is a good reader. She is fast recovering from the small-pox, and acts like a well-behaved and thoughtful girl. My heart has been touched by her patience under suffering. . They have put a atop to drunkenness among themselves, sending off those who would drink and steal, They tell me that,. after due deliberation, they voted to raise $5OO for a new church, and that it is to be accom plished within this year. After some hesitation as to whether to contribute anything for missionary purposes till they had raised the $5OO for their church, they , finally voted, before I arrived, to take up a contribution at every monthly concert.
