THE SHERIFF CONTESTED-ELECTION
CASE.—Yeeterday morning, In the Quarter Sessions,
Judges Thompson and Ludlow, the contested-election
caseot Thompson vs. Ewing, for the office of sheriff,
..wee resumed.
Mr. Gowen, for Mr. Ewing, produced (he sneerer of
ithereepondent. This paper contaius over three hundred
. epeciflcatione charging (rated, So., in various election

Judge Thompson inquired if the contestant desired
•time to examine the answer.
Mr. Brewster, in reply. said that ho desired to proceed
with the CBB6 at once. A very slight glance which they
lied been enabled to give to the.auswer—they saw that it
'as designed to open up matter which the contestant did
mot consider the proper eut•ject of investigation. They
-mottoes to attack .the city vote. In view of this the
•contretant could move to strike out these speciflostions,

arrivals of sick and wounded soldiers have tided the
Goveinutsut hospitals to their utmost capacity, and
there is now a pressing need for increased accommodes

spondent says, in relation to the worms cott shade tree',
that he hen employed a gardener to clews seven trees is
front of his home and the adjoining ones, and by doing
so these trees have entirely esrapei the ravages of the
worms, not having a worm tipsn them, although covered
with them last summer. If bongo. holders were to 002-
ploy a gardener to clean the trees heforo their honaes lu
November, then have them trimmed in ifebruxry, there
is not a doubt that this great nuisance would be entirety
removed. Persons can examine the trees before the first
four houses in Locust street, above Brost where the
individual in question resides.
Another correspondent says now is the time to deetror
the WOMB on tbo maple tree', as they are now passing
to the chrysalis state foided up in the green Mares on
the tree; bast them down before the moth comes out to
deposit thts egg for next season.

may be of ultimate importance, wee made last week by
the Mayor, City Councils, and Board of Trade of B
more, the -preeldent and directors of the Baltimore and
Ohio Railroad, and of the kitbiburg and Gonneßenito
Railroad, over the latter road to Uniontown, with a vie/
to ite early completion. Upon reaching Pettaburg, tear

city yesterday to embark on the Persia tomorrow for
Entooo, in company with Lord Lyons and his privets

to Mayor Fleury and the Collector of Customs, we learn

powers, but he has considerable experience in the consu
late, and in well known to the British residents in this
city.
ASSAULT UPON AN OFFICER.— &
party of men, alto were behaving very disorderly abttnt
one o'clock yesterday morning, at Tenth and Washlog
ton streets, were remonstrated with by Officer Charles
Hankie, of the First ward. The lattor was then. tot
upon and was knocked down by a violent blow upon the

discovered in that condition about two hours afteminrds,
