D., at the University, on General Natural History, delivered yesterday, wan largely at tended, and listened to with deep interest. Haying con clotted the Protozoa and the Radiate, bie lecture yes terday was devoted to the third grand division of the Animal : the Articuiata, which may be raid to embrace the almost illimitable range of worms and Insects. This division was sub-divided into three classes, denominated respectively, Vermea, Arthopoda, sad Arachnida, which, for greater convenience, were still farther divided into a number or orders. The Iwo first of the claims named above monopolized the hour, in the conrae of which Dr. Leidy Imparted, in his own instructive • ay, an immense amount of scientific in formation relative to these commonly-overlooked and despised classes of the animal kingdom, but which, when subjected to microacopic inveitigation, are instinct with beauty and design. In the course of his lecture he stated what may he of value to persons dosirocis of making obtervutions for themselves in this department of study. When about eighteen years of age, Dr. Leidy said he' had purchased a microscope from a pedlor at two del. tars, in using which he discovered that the selicontrac lift of a grasshopper's wing, when it had been stretched Out like a fan, was by means of tine spiral springs, or nerve cords, with which they were transversely supplied. Baying mentioned this fact, subsequently, at the Aca demy of Natural Sciences, he found that it had been theretofore unknown. The Academy used it, and since then the discovery had been referred to by various Eu ropean writers. Ile mentioned this fact, he said, in order to chow what could be accomplished with very bitting expenditure, and to inform his audience that these of them who look an interest in these investigations need not be deterred from it by tke mere cost of an In strument. For till the investigations which he bad used in this present course of lectures. (which is by far the most thorough and complete over given in this city upon the subjects treated,) a microscope. costing from ton to twenty-five dollars, was amply suilicient. These in struments, he knew, were sold from two dollars to six hundred dollars, and many physicians, under the mis taken idea that it was necessary to their purpose, paid from one hundred to two hundred dollars for instruments , which serve them no better than some others at one fourth the price. Erenborg, for example, one of the moat eminent writers and authorities in this department, bad made all his observations with a microscope costing twenty dollars. .In his next lecture, which will be de livered on ni xt Tuesday, at 1.20 I'. M., he will enter more fully upon the structure acid peculiarities of the various coders of insects.
