FINANCIAL A.Nll COMMERCIAL.
THE MONEY MARKET.
PHILADELPHIA, Juno 5, 1862.
There wee a growing diiposition to invest money at
dow rates to-day. Fatties necking Investment very na
ttirally notice the promising appearance of the United
Mates securities, and there has been a largo demand for
them from outtide parties. • Now that the queatlon of the
war le very nearly aetiled, all classes of business men are
.casting an eye on Third street as the proper avenue for
Barely investing tlitir surplus funds. Quartermasters'
certificates also begin to find a market In these custom
ers. In fact, ans abd ea ery kind of evidence of indebt ,
educes by the United States is now eagerly caught up
-and laid away, in melts caees, as a permanent security.
Tho continued advance of our Union armies le an apt
lustration of our stock-board operations. Day after day
the word is still " advancement." Days with good news,
days with no news, matte uo difference. A defeat causes
-a monition of bwiness, but no diminution of prices, as
wee illustrated lately by the Banks retreat. To-day we
have another evidence t f this fact. Seven thirties, en
dorsed, were Ulm at 108. There were no sales of the
blank, 106),; being rvadtiv bid. The sixes, 1881, were
.oleo stiffly held at 100. Reading opened at 26 S, but
advanced K, and was estetuly all day, closing at latter
price. A large blnilltB, wee done ; about '2,100 shares
changed bands.
Catawiesa Railroad eharee, common, brought 2x, an
advance; the preferred o—bide for the latter falling off
3( at the close. Pennsylvania Railroad was pretty firm
.at 48X. Camden and Amboy advanced lon yesterday's
bid. Bonds of 1864 brongbt 99X , a slight decline Mina
ltlll at 45X, lint board, and 45X, second, found
toady purchasers, the latter being an advance of x.
Long Island advanced from 15) to 18, and continued
Breast the letter figure. Harrisburg Railroad brought
.65, yesterday's rate. In bonds a very large business
was done, especially in State fives, which were firm at an
advance of X on y &gelidity 'a price. In Sunbury and
Erie sevens there was no change. North ,Penusylvenia
sixes rose %, selling at 80. City sixes, now, advanced
to 101, X over the closing bid of yesterday i the old
brought 97, being no change. Echuylkill Navigation
sixei,lllB2, 1)10 X, Bed were very Arm. Morrie Canal,
Bret mortgage, eold at 9834. Reading sixes, 1870, sold
at 94, an advance of X. Philadelphia and Erie Kate
advaiced X, and eeid at 01%. Bank shares wore dull;
Girard at 40X, Farmer,' and Mechanlca' 58, and Ken
sington 62y, being the on , y shares sold. Passenger
railways were again in
. d round at advanced prices, Se
cond and Third rieing trimk yesterday's bid of 66% to
08,y, wills able..
Money is abundant, end rates for time paper arc the
same as quoted )eeteruay. an advance, with larger
htisinees, was made In gold to-day, the ruling rate being
33( pretelum---tendency upward. The treasury demand
notes, Issue of Anguat 10th, were a little in demand to
day, at- X and ,ti premium. As long as there is's full
supply the rate will be low. When Custom House dales
absorb the hulk of them, they will approach the rate of
,prem. on gold. Thu Is d-warrant trade is st a complete
stand-still, no buyers at peering , rates nominal.
