    THE MILITARY EXCITEMENT.—The
excitement of yesterday was by no means as great as on
the previous day. Great anxiety was manifested, how
ever, to bear further accounts from General Banks' com
mand, on account of there being no many Philadelphians
in it. Tho different recruiting stations of the Reserver
Brigade and Borne 'Gritted presented Quite busy and
interesting stereo. During the day numbers of new re
mite were obtained, and it is stated that no difficulty
will be experienced in filling up the ranks. The dram
mars and fifers were parading through the streets beating
tip recruits, reminding VIM somewhat of the scene pre
sented soon after the fail of Fort Sumpter. Owing to tho
action taken by Select Council yesterday afternoon la
zooid to equlpplog the Home Guard, many of the mom
Len of that organization loot all interest in the matter
before them. The course of Councils was strongly con.
.throned. and it was Intimated that their action would be
th e men , of d teheuding the whole of the Home Guard.
In en emergency of this kind the (hard would then tender
their eerviete to tile Government as a body independent,
.and having no connection with the city. The recruiting
for the Reserve Brigade progressed more rapidly than
.tirnt of the other organization, which was no doubt owing
to the fact that the former aro already provided for by
the Stater, while the latter was depending upon the city.

PHILAMILPHIA, May 27,1862.
The opening quotations of the Stock Board were &bent
the some as the cleeing prices of yesterday. Stocks have
pretty generally recovered from tho shock of yesterday,
and nearly approached the figures of last week. A de
cided steadiness characterized the rearketdaring the day,
and operations were large at an advance. A belief that
the disaster to General Banks was unimportant, and that
McClellan would soon have a loose hand to shake at the
rebels tended greatly to this elastic feeling. The arrival
of a messenger from Washington, who stated that the re
trograde movement was understood and believed, by re
sidents and those high in office, to be premeditated, ie.

The Sick and Wounded of the Army
The following we extract from a letter addressed to
George U. Stuart, Esq., of this city, by the Bey. J. C.
Sloan, dated "Steamboat Sew," on the way to York
town, May 22, 1862. Mr. Sloan is a member of the depu
tation lent to Virginia by the Young Moo's Christian
daeociation of this city, to attend to the wants and spi
ritual comfort of the lick and wounded seidiera. After
narrating a ',ember of individual cases of interest that
have come under hie notice, in ministering to the suffer•era in the Mill Creek and Seminary 'hospitals, he says:
There are many of the rebel wounded among them.
They all seem greatly surprised at the kind treatment
which they receive, and some with whom I hare con
versed express sorrow for baring engaged in the war.
Many of ahem have died. They seem to be less able to
bt ar op under their sufferings than the Union soldiers.
If I can, I will remain as long as 1 see them Is work to
be done May I write you for whatever I thlok will aid
to their coolest and such as cannot be obtained tweed
There are those in Phliadelphla who I know will gladly
contribute. The need in many cases in Kill Greek hos
pital is nourishing food and little delicacies, snob as we
cannot find Isere I shall remain for some time at York
town, and other pause up on the way to Richmthd,
should we find many wounded and sick. Should I find
but- few, and those there attending and girlog Ohristian
instruction, I shell return to the hospitals at Fortress

the wounded and sick of our arm,.
lO u'or.ox P. kl —We arrived her• (Yorktown) at 3

this evening. and gave each something to read, and had
