The Baltimore papers, yesterday, contain accounts of the excitement which prevailed in that city on Sunday. The Maryland News Sheet, a Secession organ, states that : The news of the defeat of the regiment of Col. Beni/ exasperated the Union sentiment of the city, and yester day morning it was very evident that the slighted Cling, would incite a riot. About belt poet 10 o'clock a gentle man named Freeman was on the corner of Baltimore and South streets, near the Sun Building, and he need some remark which was dieteatetni to a party near him, and he was immediately assaulted. The moment the light com menced, the crowd, several hundred in number, which Lad congregated in front of the American and Clipper officee, ran to the scene, shouting for the Union, rind In citing the crowd to violence. There were only one or two policemen present, and they were able to do but little. The crowd proceed upon the parties, and for a time a general riot wee threatened. This lig ht was the begin ning of a eerlea which kept the City in a perfect tumult during the entire day. It was only necessary to point out a man as ono of Southern kympathy when .the crowd would immediately attack him, knock him down, and stamp upon hint when he was on the ground. The po lice force was increseed, but it was utterly impossible to control the violence of men who acted without fear and without responsibility. One after another, citizen, were beaten, who bad not given the least provocation. The polite took charge of the assaulted win, and conveyed them to the station house, when a timber of thorn were arrested by order of the Marshal of Police." The Baltimore Sun ( tiniorr / states that ff a largo collec tion of persons rum mbied on Baltimore street, extending nearly from Calvert to Holliday street, anxiously expect log news from the Upper Potomac. Suddonly, about 10 o'clock, there was a cry and a rush, and 8000 an agol man, named Robert Morrow, was led from the crowd by the police s with Ids face covered with blood. He was taken to the central polies station, when it appeared in testimony that he made use of expressions calculated to excite a riot, and the police had considerable difficulty In extricating him safely from the crowd. That seemed only necessary to rase the excitomeot to the highest pitch, and for more than two hours there were frequent assaults. A number of persona shortly after went to a house on the comer of Baltimore and Harrison streets, on one of the upper floors of which are rooms occupied by a quadrille association, a portion of the furniture In which was broken. There wore several of the members in the room at the time, who jumped from the second story on Baltimore Wed. Quito a number of porsouo wore at e•ulte,t, but in the mate of the city there was no serious damage. The pollee were out in r trong force, and wore instruniental in prevetving the commission of greater personal injury. .e About neon, the crowd left the centre of the city and went westward. tho late scene of excitement being then eemparativelf quiet. In the afternoon, the throag again gathered on Baltimore street, near Sou'll, and there was promise of further trouble when Mr. Samuel linden, 0110 Of the police conguiseionere, made his appoarence and soon restored order. About five o'clock, when • rush wan mode. Mr. H. threw ltlnwelf before too crowd and commanded it to halt. His presence commendsd respect, when he nude a short address. He toot t lent that they were malting the excitement If they wore Union meet. they were in favor of . the Bnion, the Cos etitution, and the enforcement of the laws.' Th. pvlice were the conservators of tho peace, acd as each they were boned to preserve the mice and enforce the laws at any and every hazard. • Hie worth' had the desired effect, std Boon tbe throng began to disperee and co:dinned until order was restored. A strong body of police was sta. Coned at the corner of No:th and Baltimore Arena for the remainder of the day, but no further deniouatration of disorder wee made. Throughout the whole affray, the police labored zealously for the promotion of the peon, and promptly affore'ea protection to those who were assailed." FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. THE MONEY MARKET. PUILADELPITTA, May 26, 1802 'Early today, es the contents of the newspapers were read and discussed, many predicted a fearful fall In the stack market. Many of the large operators' looked thoughtful and severe, and not a few dreaded to appear at the limn haunts of business, fearful lest, meeting their fellows, their forebodings should assume a tangible shape, by the appearance of a flood of stocks anti nocuri ties at ruinously low prices ;I's few, however, were hope ful, believing the retreat of General Banks, though per haps a little more disastrous than was intended, was only a part of the programme, as so settled their features into econething like placidity. tir ben the board opened, more, and apparently worse news was received from the neighborhood of Harper's Ferry; but, instead - e f the expected feverish depression, a feeling of seenrily was evinced, which soon grew into a general sense of relief when 103 was bid for United States tie, 1881; 104 for 7.30, and 99 for city 6a. Bending suffered afall of 1, 23% being unreservedly bid. At the close of the beard a decidedly better feeling was ex hibited. At the second board `United States ;63 and 7.30 e each advanced and Beading X. With these ex ception, prices remained the same as en Saturday, and the market closed firmly, after a day not remarkable fur large sales. On Third Arnet t matters had much:the same nervous aspect early in the day. Operators seemed inclined to hold on awhile, believing that the bold dash of the rehabs would have hot a temporary effect here, and be of no groat importance to tletneelves; everybody seeming to concur in the opinion that they would have to back out very speedily. or bo cut off and defeated. Business, therefore, soon fell into the usual channels, the brokers dropped their anxious faces, sod by noon everything was going on smoothly, the riot in Baltimore, the stirring proclamation of Governor Andrew!, of Massachusetts, the call cud proclamation of our Governor, Curtin, the huge rosters calling for recruits, the preparations of the Reserve Brigade for an early departure, and the sharp roll of the drum at a recruiting station to the contrary notwithstanding.
