Meeting in Dehnit of the Soldiers Under this head there was a call advertised for a meet ing to be held en Sunday evening, in the Tabernacle Me thodist Episcopal Church, Eleventh sweet, near Jeffer son, fa* the jiiiit.6.6 of I , ioli:afizing the tall #l6lbl Inte rests of the soldiers and sailore, and providing them with food for the mind." The neat church edifice wan well filled, and the liberal collection at the close showed that this movement (which is conducted under the melees of the Young Men's Christian Association of this city) is growing in favor with the public. The exercises were conducted by the pastor of the church, the Bev. Mr. Allen, and opened with Riming by the choir, and gram by iho 11. v. John Chambers. OPENING STATEMENT BY MR. MONS P. B. Simons, lag., being announced to the audience, stated on behalf of the Army Committee that for nine months A entrained, apPelnted by the 17.mn0. Mmi Chtifilifin Association of this city, had been endeavoring to minister in the most practical way to the spiritual wel fare of our soldiers is the tented field. In the accom plishment of this work they bad distributed gratuitously over two million pages of printed matter in the form Of tracts and interesting religious books, together with a large number of Testaments. During this time thiity four meetings bad been held in various churches in this city for the purpose of obtaining the requilite means to carry ou this work. In addition to their labors of this chisracter, titer hod .1.30 roccatiy- commenced supplying the soldiers' hospitals here with milk (an article of health and comfort which is m t provided by the Go vernment) and were now furnishing eight hundred quarts a week to these establishments. Mr. Simons de scribed some Of the scenes he had witnessed in visiting the hospitals, stating that, while taking the wounded sufferers by the hand, he had felt like kneeling at their bedside and thanking them with his whole heart for what they had done for him, in going in his stead. and in the stead of his children, to bravo the wounds and scars ' anA oven death itoelr, in order to protect Our houses nod country. He thought that, under the circumstances, the most that we who are at home, amid peaceful sur roundings, could possibly do for these men was little, in deed, compared with what they have volunteered to do for ris and our children. ADDRESS BY TILE PASTOR The first speaker of the evening wee the Rev. John Allen, pastor of the church. He said be saw that his name had been put down in the advertisement for a speech, although he had COMA utioramyrad to make obi_ Tilts, however, ought to make no difference, as he held that every man should be willing and able at all times to say a word in behalf of a good cause. Tie thought also that every man present should be willing and able to offer a prayer in his heart for the interact of thin CURL Prayer, be said, involved a few Unmeant items; one of these was faith in the appropriateness of the thing asked fur. This, he thought, was an appro priate cause—the affording of spiritual food for the minds of our soldiers. Then, again, prayer demanded a sincere heart, and a willingness to assist in procuring the ail ewer to it. We must pray, not as hypocrites, but with honest hearts. Practically, those soldiers were, as had been said, suffering in our stead, and we ought at least be willing to empty our purses in their behalf. When men was benefited God flee glorified, and, in fact, the ontywar so which Gted could be glorified was try bene fiting man ADDRESS OP THE REV. MR. CHAMBERS The nest speaker was the Rev. John Chambers. With an evident Noose, which some may, and soma may not Lave unaerstood, he commenced by saying that ho bad no apology at all to offer to-night, farther than to say that he was suffering from a severe cold, as he evi dently nes from his hoarseness. We were, he said, in the millet Of a terrific war, Camp lite woe the most exposed of all lives. There were a hundred evil influences in all our regi ments to one good influence ; in all probability, there were in them a hundred unconverted men to oue con- verted man. There are a thousand reasons why men EhOhld may &Lamb for God to hasten the tlAlt. of this unnatural wee [Reawaken of Amen! Amen! all over the house ] If God had ever put a thought into the minds of men, He had unquestionably put the thought of giving the Bible to our soldiers into the minds of the young men engaged in this movement. He bti.W the development of noble Christianity also in the efforts now being main by kind-hearted men and women to supply the suffering in our hospitals with articles of health and comfort, and it was a significant fact that among our wounded soldiers in the Weat, the Sisters of Charity of the Catholic Church were making an itupreseion upon the minds of those eutterinq men by their untiring acts of kindness, which count never be effaced. Dlr. Chambers said be was opposed to wars from prin ciple, and that he was becoming more so every day. He was not Euereir opposed ic UM war, Int to all ward, and, It Da otant/0 live to be a hundred years old, he would continue to throw his influence against wars to the end. Yet, that our Union might be restored and preserved, was tho ardent prayer of his heart. He hoped that these efforts to Christianize the soldiers would not be abated hen the vim nes over, for Cod kacw there was rec.t for a work of this kind, and it ought to be followed up. Be stoke of the work now going on, in his own church, in making garments for the wounded. The ladies of his congrtgation, it appears, are zealonsly maser(' two itlttinoOna in each week in this way and on Sunday mort ire and afternoon there had been collections taken in his church for the wounded soldiers, in which he had noticed the largest proportion of bank notes that ho had ever seen in a church collection. ADDRESS OE GEORGE R. STUART, .EgO Mr. ft Wart said we were living in eventful times. We hear the sound of war in almost every southern and south western breeze that reaches the city of Brotherly Love ; but above tit:. sound of the cannon the Christian could hear the voice Of ffiP.4 Pbtt ricito on the whirlwind and directs the storm, pr oclaiming to the nations, "us still, and know that I am God !" Be saw above the smoke of battle a glorious future for America. He believed that, under God, we would succeed in putting down this un natural rebellion, and that right speedily. In the lan guage of Wesley, he believed that 16 God was with us lit this contest." Mr. Stuart spoke eloquently of the dreadful ravages of this war, the losses it was causing in life and limb. But this was a mall thing compared with the fact that thou nude of theme into were ibiug "without God and with out hope V' lie said he was speaking in behalf of over seven hundred thousand souls acting in different depart ments of the great Federal army, and it was one of the most inviting and successful fields of labor that he had ever engaged in. Ito bad Tititil the camps on the Potomac ) and now at Torkttwn, and be had never found men so willing, and even anxious, to receive religious reading. He had, in company pith several gentlemen. visited as many as Mir ty.two thousand soldiers in a single day, distributing beaks fn thehi, mid ta6.,c t ihem fro= th. iopaof omnibuses, the foot of flagstaff's, and other plsces, and pith scarcely an exception the men had received their tracts and words Pith respect, and in many cases with gratification. At tho close of Mr. Stuart's remarks, the usual collar, tion was taken up, alter which a doxology was snug, and the congregation was dismissed with a benediction by the Rev.. Dir. Chambers.
