COOPER- SHOP SOLDIER'S HOME OF
TUN OILY OF PHILkIAL PHlL—This laeklintlea,
about being established by tho gectionten composing the
committee of the Cooper-Shop Volunteer Refreshment
Stamm, which has already attained for itself a wide and
reputation, bide feireventually to become an
institution which WM reflect credit on the city of Phila•
delphia and her patriotic people. The subject of esta
blishing a soldier's home in which to pr wide a permanent
abode for all persons disabled for life r during the present
war, was agitated some morns Mee, and the matter wee
so encouragingly received by numbers of most of our
prominent and wealthy citizens as to make it evident
that the new enterprise must meet with the highest sue
awe.
A number of the most wealthy and influential have
already promised it their liberal suppt , rt, so that the af
fair is now no longer an t sp-riment, bin a matter of car

respectable of our citizens, and the matter bee been
thoroughly discussed in all its bearings. A charterlor

the charter Adopted. The concern is to he controlled by
a board of managers, who will he elected on Tuesday
night week, notice to that effect having been published.
The charter is most liberal in its views, anti has thus far
reel teed the sanction of all
no preamble elates that whereas certain citizens of
the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have associated
themselves together for the purposes hereinafter set
forth, and are desirous of obtaining and enjoying the
powers and immunities of a corporation or body politic
in law under the 'provisions of, and in conformity with,
the several acts of Assembly of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania, in such case made and provided, they do,
therefore, respectfully petition the honorable the judges
of the Court of Common Pleas for the county of Piing..
delphia for a decree of incorporation under the following
constitution:
The constitution nays that the association shall be
known by the name of " The Cooper Shop S.ildiers' Home,
of the City of Philadelphia." to have perpetual emcees
film and the privileges sad immunities incident under
the law to corporations or bodies politic, and to take,
hold. and enjoy all manner of goods, chalets, and estates,
the yearly income of which shall not exceed the awn of
five thousand dollars.
The object of the association will be to secure a suit

who, while in the service of the United States of Ameri
ca, either upon land or sea, shall become disabled from
'wounds or from sickness, an that they are ;hereby unable

persons may be nursed and cared for during sickness,
and provided with comforts and necessities daring con-
valescence. The funds and means necessary for this
purpose are to be provided by voluntary contributions
and chorisied,
The officers of the association will consist of a board
of managers, to be chosen as hereinafter provided, who
shall conduct the affairs of the corporation, and shall
make toY•laws for their own government not inconsistent
with the Constitution and laws of the United States, or
the Constitution and laws of the Commonwealth of Penn
aylvania.
The board of managers will be elected by ballot at tha
annual meeting, on the first Weluesd .y in January in
each and every year. between the hours of d andlo

sen The board hall consist of not rawer than eleven,
nor more than twenty five members. as strati be deter
mined by the society at its annual meetings In case of

Thompson and Ludlow, the case of Walter and James
Phillips,
charged with the murder of Davit Helephill on
the Sth of September. 1860, was put on trial. Since the
commapgion of the effetice, Water Phillips has died, spa
James, the lathe', alone was on trial. The unfortunate
occurrence fur which the defendants were arrested is in-

Walter, and when seen entering, there was no dispute

events of the day were very contused, and she admitted
that she as well as her hushend had been drinking. Other
witnesses who saw James Phillips after leaving the house

causing instant death,
Both James and Walter were under the influence of li
quor. Tie case was finally suhmitted to the jury, who
retired, and in a short time rendered a verdict of „ not

COLONEL SMALL'S REGIMENT is to
have one of Richardson'a patent tents ' in which the
chaplain may hold religious services. Some few days
ago the venerable Dr. F. G. Vandyke, of this city, whose
eon h lieutenant colonel of this regiment. paid them a
visit. and suggested the idea of having one of these cepa.
dons tents, under which the men migut be assembled for
religious worship. This suggestion was well received,
and the desire xpreFsed that one might be immeaiately
obtained and forwarded to them tire. Vandyke named
the matter to a few Mende, and has already the promise

pacity, is now erected at the Farmer's Hay Market. Se

an inquest on the bed) of a man, which had been found
floating in the Delaware, near Coates-street wharf.

who gave the name of William Davi•a. was arrested on

Station yesterday morning for a hearing.

GENERAL NEWS.
TERRIBLE TRAGEDY IN BUFFALO.—On Thursday
scorning, Moses Menard. a Frenchman, accidentally
shot his wife, under the supposition that she was a
burglar that had entered his room. He states that
on his return home the night before ho era inform.
ed by his wife that MUD men had endeavored to
gain admission to the house during his absence.
She persuaded him to load his gun, which he placed
by the bedside. In the night she arose, and he,
awakening suddenly, Bred and killed her instantly,
supposing her to be a burglar. He was arrested.
FIREWOOD IN BALTIMORE.—The Maryland Le
gislature has passed an act that on and after the
first Monday in ➢lay, instant, all firewood brought
by water or railroad, to the city of Baltimore, for
sale, shall be set up, packed, and corded, under the
direction of one of the inspectors or woedcorders
appointed.
A " GRIDIRON NEAR Ructma.—The Panama
Railroad Company have recently commenced the
construction of a fine gridiron at Tobago, in the
oity of Panama. The gridiron will be suffvtiently
large to admit the largest-sized steamers, and will
prove of the greatest advantage to that port, Al
though the work of construction is carried on night
and day, it will be several months before " its com
pletion. The material has all been imported from
the United States.

that the horse General McClellan. formerly known
as the Pease colt, has been recently purchmecl by
Mr. G. M Robinson, of Augusta, for the handa3me
sum of $1,590. He is a Drew colt, seven years old,

BRIGADIER GENERALS APPOINTED.—The Se
cretary of War has transmitted to the .Huse a list
of nil the brigadier generals made from April 1,
1561, to April 1. 1862. The total number appointed
during the year was one hundred and sixty-throo.
Of these, ten have been appointed tnijor generals,
three have resigned, four declined, two died, and
one was rejected - Total number in service Anril
1, 1562, was one hundred and forty-three. From
the first to the 23d of April, 1862. sixty two were
appointed and twenty-nine confirmed.
VANITY - FAIR'S LAST.—By special permission of

SAD ACCIDENT AT LINN CREEK, Mo.—While the
provision train to General Curtis's army was being
ferried across the Osage river, at Lion Creek,
hiimoun, on the 13th of April, four of the mem ,
bets of Company D, Sixth Regiment of Missouri
Infantry, were drowned by the sinking of the ferry
boat.
