The Accumulation OP IVIUD IN THE
SCIIUYI KILL.—I be rapid accumulation of detritus in
the Kaiimoimt dam can be showu by a comparison of the

below the Twenty.fourth ward Works to the Girard ave

the river to such au extent as to impede navigation, and

This survey was made in 1853, and the comparison of the
two shows the depositor mud at this point to be 55,379

evidently much mere but for w»nv of actual sur

would no doubt be found to be from 2&.000 to 80.000
cubic yards per year in the lower reaches of the dam—

The above comparison Bbows the extraordinary tena
city displayed by the consumers o! goods and yarns iu ab
staining from purchases, and it confirms our oft-expross
ed opinion that tbe dormant stocks, if called into active
existence, amount in tbe aggregate to nearly a twelve
months’ crop of cotton. It will be observed tbat tbe im
port of American cotton amounts only to ljf per ceut of
that received Hat year up to this time. and that oven with
nearly a treble supply from the East Indies the aggregate
import dg?| ppt exceed one-fourth of ]a*t year’s, Qa
the other hand* Vbe homo deliveries of American cot
ton have dwindled down to loss than oue-tounh, and
the aggregate to five-t-ighthßOt last year’s. Theexportto
Ihe Continent shows also a large decrease, when, from
tbe quantity exported, tbat which has been sent to the

Nor is there yet any appearance that consumers are ne
cessitated, by their wauts, to come forward } the
stocks of in Manchester are said to be again
in course of increase, and tbe Continent seems
almost to have given over purchasing cot
ton. Notwithstanding tho great rednetion in the de
liveries, our stocks of cottou are ansnuaug alarmingly
small proportions, even if sot measured by those of last
year, and unless an early supply should come to our
a>sistance, the cotton famine is drawing nearer. We
have had a large import this week, mostly from India,
but for a novelty we have also an import of Araeri -.an
cotton, partly of parcels from Hew York, making
the third passage across, and l t 26Q ba]eg from
Charleston direct. The demand has again been
very moderate from all clones of buyers, atd yet such
is the difficulty of finding suitable lots of American cot
ton that we have to raise our Quotations #ojlfd.--viz:
