The cement or roof covering is boiM, after which it is
thinned down by the use of turpentine. Recently, ben*
cine has been used tor this thinning purpose- Yesterday

fcefore the latter bad time to cool The benzine v*-

Fortunately, the factory stood ou a lot and was sur
rounded by no other buildings, and the flames did not
extend farther.

.Army Hospital nt Fifth and Buttonwood.
The various cor. plaints which have reached us from
"various tources, rfspecting mismanagement tu ROTTIC of
"the army botpiisis in lint city, has led ns to make a visit
■of inspection to some of these institutions, in order to
rpeak advietdiy respecting the ahu?es complained of.

not exempt fr< zu the hard lot of ft soldier's life even in a
hospital, we do net conbt. There may be cases in which
a want of feeling, aid even gross neglect, may exist in
these humane estaMihlunvuts, that are by no means
flattering to those having them in ehargo. It must
be borne in mind, I ewerer, that the improvi
•eiug of immense hospital accommodations, and
caring for thousaids of sick and wounded, with limited
for di icg so, would even, under the best regu
lation. leave room for eyrapathrtic criticism, especially
where people have access who dire guided more by thoir
feelings for the moment thau good judgment. Much
complaint has been made, for example, that delicacies

A visit to the hospital at Fifth and Buttonwood streets,
yesterday, exhibited to us the order aud routiue which
are professedly adopted in them all, and we must sxy

complained of, ir ilj« statements wbicli have been made
are great exaggerations; exaggerations, unfortunately,
which can only result to the disadvantage of the men in
Yrtrow behalf they are made, as the public will be i&u in
clined to send contributions to the hospitals, if the im
pression becomes gentral that they are not properly ap
propriated .
We may here state, that Dr. Neill is at the head of this
.important dsp&rihii-Lt !u tin* city, to whom ait nn*l-prac
tices thould be reported, ho being the chief responsible
person to see that they are remedied. The principal sur*
.geon in charge of this hospital is Dr. A. 0. Bournoiiville,
aided by the following acting assistant surgeons : Dr.
Richard J. i>uugiieou, i>r. Wtu. 01, Breed, Dr, Gy HI 9 B.
Jving, and three medical cadets, Messrs. McArthur, Ciea
\er, and Belles. The hospital steward is Mr. E. J. Ke
fersteine, la passing through the building (which is ad
mirably COnstiucUl for light and voutilatlcii), «-<? saw- at
every step, fiom the officers’ mess-rooms to fourth-story
wards, the most gratifying indications that every thing
ja being done for the invalid soldiers that possibly could
De—in a hospital.
In the basement, which i 8 devoted mainly to tll9 culi
nary department, we found the most perfect order and
• cleanliness. The cocks were preparing dinner for the
men, which,.for those sufficiently convalescent to come

xnatoes, and good fresh bread, * liberal allowance beiag
placed [upon each plate before calling thorn to dinner,
.-For those confined to the wards certain delicacies were
provided, euch as preserves and peaches* their chief dish
•being mutton soup. This, considering that but a fraction
• over fifteen cents per day is appropriated by the Govern
ment tor eacb.mau’a ration, (and not forty cents, as has
been erron, ously et&ted,; appeared to us a very comforta
•l»le sort of fare.
This hospital commenced active operation, in February,
since which it has registered about four hundred pa
tients, of which number the small proportion 01 ten have
• died, and the remainder improved bo rapidly that ttw

only two 'hundred and fifty. "When we visited the
■wards a large number, probably one-third, of the inva
lids w ere out on passes, taking air aud exercise, and those

has caused much fault-finding. Many of the sick and
wounded are ordeied for final dificlmrge from service;
their friends call to see (hem, and insist upon removing
them, which can only be done on furlough, and that
furlough the rt-gulation in such cases forbids. If thi3
arrangement eouUl be changed in some way, in order to

own homes or to those of thoir friends, one of the most
Berims, and we may say plausible, causes of complaint
