—This will he the subject of a lecture to be delivered
*4 Concert Hall this (Monday) evening, by tbe Rev, 0.
31. Butler, D. D. Those who know, pronounce this
lecture to be one of ibe most interesting for a popular
siudience,at this particular juncture, ever given in this
city. The proceeds of the lecture will be for the benefit
4>f a mission of the P?6t6st4fit ChOfAh Ift this
city. A rich treat and a crowded house may be antici
pated.
Card Photograph of Colonel Lyle. —
TTbe numerous friends, in this city and elaewhero, of
Colonel Lyle, of the Hibetietk Regiment P. V., formerly
of tbe National Guard, will be glad to learn tbat an ad
mirable carte de visite of the gallant Colonel has just
2>ecn executed by Mr. Gutekunst, No. 704 Arch street,
■where copies can be obtained. Mr. Gutekunst now of

readers.
Warbvrtos’s Improved Army Hat and
Cap. —Mr. W. F. Warbutton, the celebrated Phila
delphia Hatter, No. 430 Chestnut street, has lately -in
■vented an improved Army Hat and Cap, merit
«of which consists in having a Cape attached to them,
'Whteh pMliddlly the puppduea foP Which the
a* Havelock ” was intended, with imperfect success.
*This addition is so arranged as to be worn inside the hat,
■or flowing over the neck, as occasion may require The
last number cf the Scientific American devotes an Ulus
toted article to Mr. Warlrarton's invention* and bestows
upon ft high pi aide. It is certainly a common-Eense
article, and ought to bo generally adopted.
Fine Family Flodr.— Mr. C. H. Mattson,
rieaJer in Sue groceries, Arch and Tenth streets, has con
stantly on hand the best brands of flour for family use,
flogethtr with an elegant line or all the choicest articles
fin the grocery line adapted for the beat family use.
That Ghost.— Much, speculation exists as
So the ghostly visitor that was seen recently upon the
flower of St. Peter’s Church. Some insist that tbe thing
vu a reality, while others hold that it was an illusion,
flheeyesof the spectators bein? made 44 the fool of their
other senses.” For onr own part we are no believers in
ghosts; we have faith in corporeal realities, and we be
lieve In genuine men And WArttott, particularly when the
Conner have sufficient good taste to wear the elegant and
inibstantial suits that are made at tbe Brown Stone Cloth
fing HaU of Bockbill & Wilson, Nos. 603 and GO5 Chest
mu! street, above Sixth. A real man thus attired is a
*very agreeable object to behold.
The Photograph Mania.—The photograph
makers must be in luck, with the present rage for cartes
tic visite. Only think of supplying every young lady
•withyour “counterfeit presentment ” at two shilling* a
iead! And not because the damsel “cares a cuss" for
or yoor picture, but because she wants to get her
album filled with fine-lookiug individuals, all of whom,
beforehand, shoul 1 procure a handsome and neat-fitting
Haft of Spring clothes from the cheap 3lamm?(h Empo
rium qf Granville Stokes, No. 609 Chestnut street, Phila
delphia.
The Organization* of the Army.—A com
pany is the ttntf of an army* and is supposed to average,
on the war Law*, one hundred men; officers, included.
'The general rule for organization of such a company
gives one captain, two lieutenants, five sergeants, four
corporals, and eighty-five men. The first sergeant is
called the orderly sergeant, and is, next to tho captain,
the matt important man in the company—carrying the
i>ooka of the company and calling the roll morning and
evening. The company is formed, when in column, of
two platoons and four sections, each platoon commsndei
Ijj ft Lieutenant, and each section by a sergeant. . Officer
and privates can have their Spring clothing, whether mi
litary or oivilian, furnished to order at the shortest no

“THE JAYNE’S-HALL CRAVAT
U 3 STORE”—THE PUBLIC UNDECEIVED.—I
have noticed two cards in this column of the The Press,
iu vtiisli, by intinvalim, /am made to appear as tha
proprietor of a concern at tho corner of Eighth and
Chestnut streets, which, for obvious reasons, retains
tho sign of “ESHLEMAN A FLETCHER,” with the
word in diminutive letters, over It. Tho
proprietor of that concern, whoever he may be, has, in the
cards referred Id* claimed the concern in Question to be
The Jayne's-Hall Cravat Store.** Now, as the
“ Jayne’s- HaU Cravat Store” was established by myself %
and continued under my own proprietorship until I re
moved it to my present location, at the northwest corner
of SEVENTH and CHESTNUT Streets; and as tbe
impression that I have any connection whatever with any
bogus concern would be detrimental to my credit among
men, I wish to disclaim IT. I do, therefore,
assert the insinuation that 11 the Jayne's-llall Cravat
Store** is any other than my own store, at Seventh and
Chestnut, to be a wicked falsehood.
2 h&Y? been mortified, ala o, at haying the public led to
BuppOßtt that I bad anything to do with tho asinine conun
drum, in The Press , about ll a mule’s foot!” As I have
struggled for several years to establish in Philadelphia a
first-class Cravat Store—having commenced in Jayne’s
Hall in 1857, and continued tho enterprise thus far with
gratifying-succtes, paying my debts with money instead
of altered sigu*boarda Inm not willing, at this late day,
to have the fruits of my labors impaired by the knavery
of another.
Respectfully submitted to the public.
J. ALBERT E3HLEMAN,
Sole proprietor of “The Jayne’s-Hall Cravat Store,”
