The 26th anniversary of the Marine Temperance So
ciety was held in the Mariner’s Church last

The Hon. Ogden Edwards died last night at his resi
dence, on Staten Island, in the eighty-fii at year of his age.
•The deceased came to this city in the early part of this
century, from the State of Connecticut, .where he was
tram and educated. No family in America bag reached a
Higher intellectual elevation than that of the Edwards—
the famous divine, Jonathan Edwards, being its head,
srad Judge Ogden Edwards his grandson. Not long after
3lr. Edwards came to this city, he was appointed to the

This morning Wm. Henry Hawkins, the colored
steward who was recently convicted ol the murder of
Captain Wm. Henry Adams, of the ship Lamergier , was

of June, between the hours of d o'clock in the morning
fcnd 4 o’clock in the afternoon. The prisoner received
sentence without any perceptible emotion.

expected by bis friends, as he had been but a few days

Bundled dollars was collected in the Bethel Methodic
Church, (colored), Sixth street, below Pine, on Sunday,
the same to be applied to the purchase of clothing fur
tho contrabands at Beaufort, South Carolina. Thirty
'women are uow employed by this co igregation ia making

“ The Siege of Londonderry.”— This will
lie the subject of a lecture to be delivered, at Concert
Halli this (Thursday) eveninp, under the aunficti of ths
Youog Men’s Christian Association, by tbs Set. David
Steele, an able and eloquent young divine of this city,
who has evidently prepared himself to render this subject
as it haß never heretofore been treated. He delivered
the same lecture in this city a abort time ago, whan it cre
ated quite a sensation. Those who heard it speak of it
as thrillfngly eloquent. Its delivery to-night will doubt
less attract a crowded house. The proceeds of the lecture
M ill be for the benefit of the sick and wounded soldiers
in our hospitals.

the 2d, was fallen in with by the schr Matilda, which

au Platte. A portion of the crew were sent to this place.
Thehark sunk in two hours after being abandoned.
[The Elizabeth j rated A 2, registered 166 tons, built
in 1844 at this port, where she is owned by Messrs Baker
& Folsom, the captain, and others.
