The Pennsylvania Coal Company issued a circular,
last week, fixing the prices of their coal on board vessels
at Port Kwen, for the mouths of May and Juno, at the
following rates, for cash:

cents below what coal was furnished by the New York

vened of the trade, in connection with the transporting
companies in Philadelphia, to take this extraordinary
movement on the part of the Pennsylvania Goal Company
. into consideration- What the result of these deliberations
were we are unable to state, hut tendency Wd3 to
equally low rates in order to meet it. These rates take
-effect on the first of May, and continue until the first of
duly. In the meantime 20 certs per ton additional aro
charged on the old stock on hand.
At these prices, according to the contract that exists
between the Pennaj Ivauia Coal Company and the Dela
ware aiid Hudson Canal Company, fixing the into of toll
for the nee of the Daliuv&fA and Hudson Company’s coal
-at one-lia-f the excess over Si 50 per ton, at which coal
sells on hoard vessels, the Pennsylvania Coal Company’s
toll will be only about 11 cent 3 per ton during the months
of May and June. When this contract was made, coal
was selling on board vessels at Port Ewen at from $4 to
5*4.25 per ton. which, it was supposed, would continue.
What motive could prompt this eemnanp te> i&us this
circular at these extremely low rates, at a time when the
trade presented a very healthy aspect, is a mystery to us.
It is a gross outrage on the rights of labor and the in
terests of Pennsylvania, which calls for the interposition
t>f our Legislature, if there is any mode by which thoir
charter can be reached. Pennsylvania furnishes all the
anthracite cool feat to market, and no foreign compauy
ought to be permitted on her soil to thus recklessly do
stroy one or lier leading intoreals out of revougo or vin
dictiveness. growing our of contracts in which they have
entered into with rival companies. I'* e call the attention
of enr members of ihe Legislature to this subject, and If
there iB a repealing clause in their charter, it ought/o be
nt once declared null and void, on the ground that its
continuance is destructive to the best interests of the
State. This is a legitimate subject for legislation, be
cause it affect* the interest of tlx© whole State in lessening
the value of her mineral lands, and thus diminishing her
sources of taxation—and this, too, by a foreign company
which she has permitted on her soil. When people he
ctare insane or incapacitated to take charge of their pro
perty, the law steps in and takes it out of their hands and
plaeea it iu the hands of trustees. Whether this move ha 3
irevh caused by revenge, or si species of corporation in
sanity, it appears to us to he a fit subject for legislative
interference.
Respecting the product of several of the Lake Supe
rior copper mine*, for 1801, the J lining Gazette says.
The product of the Fevrtlc mine for the twelve
months ending December is 2,194,286 lbs of net
mineral, which yielded of ingot copper 1,800,125 lbs, or
900 tons 115 lbs. This shows a very high punty of their
mineral, which rates al about 82.14 per cent, of pure
metal The product of the Franklin mine, for tlie seal©
period, was M IS* of net mineral,.which, produad

an average purity of morr than 812* P® r cent, of pure
metal. The product ft ihe Isle Royale mine in net mine

Lincoln has taken the country by surprise by sending an
unexpected message into Congress upon the subject of
slavery. There is a diversity of opinion concerning the
views of the Executive upon this distracted subject.
Some claim that he is too conservative, an.l too tender
wiili the ‘-peculiar institution;” others maintain that
he is an “infernal Abolitionist, any how;” while yet
otheis think he should have touched upon other and
more foreign subjects. It ia hard to please everybody;
but we believe that diflicut feat is accomplished about as
nearly at the Brown Stone Clothing Hall of Rockhili &

as it is anywhere else under the sun.

Alice of Kuglaud, with the Prince Louis of Darmstadt,
has been published in the London papers. It provides
that the Prince shall receive from John Bull a dowry of

income uf 4(1,000 flprmr, will be their joint revenue.
Queen Victoria also promises her (laughter X 6,000 a year
for her personal use, which can never be alienated or
mortgaged from her by her husband. If the Prince dies
before'the Princess, the latter is to receive from tho
State of Hesse Darmstadt a revenue of twenty thousand
florins "and a residence at Darmstadt, completely fur

as very grand and complete—but says nothing of the

Died Suddenly, in Philadelphia, eu the Q»th ult.; of
congoelion of the brain,' OLIVER E. STRICKLAND,
only son of Amariah Strickland, of West Chester, Pa.,
aged 36 years. The deceased volunteered for the de
fence of his Government in the three-months men, and
became a member of Company A, Ninth Regiment, com
manded by Captain Henry R. Class. After his return,
lie was appointed second lieutenant in Company !,
Coloi el (lugs’ Ninety-seventh, and went with hie regi
ment to Port Royal, South Carolina, where he remained
ior some time, but, on account of a constant tendency of
a rush ot blood to the head, was forced to resign hls
commission, receiving an v: lwnorable (discharge” from
Brigadier General T. W. Sherman. He was a young
man of marked intelligence, aud his sudden death falls
heavily on Ida worthy parents and a large circle of at
