The Indian Government bad already reduced the duty
•on yams, and hoped soon to do the same on manufactur
ed goods; but the Government could not promise to do so

Queen Victoria, in response to an application from the
committee of the Albert Memorial Fund, expressed hor

at the Freemason'* Tavern. The Bishop of Ohio prosi
fied, and two hundred ladies and gentlemen were present.
Bon. C. F. Adams, in proposing a toast “ To the Me-
Snory of Washington,” referred to the present crisis in
America. The United States, he said, are engaged in
throwing off the burden of a malign power. The assault
«?d the Federal Government carries with it an aggressive
principle. It Involved the acknowledgment of a pre
scriptive right of some men to rule over their fellows.
Tfe aut then fully re-establish our fundamental doc
trines at every hazard. It will, doubtless, cost us a se
vere effort in men, money, time, and cause disorder, and,
perhaps, confusion' bat let us remember the trials
iwbicb Washington endured. Let us trust that we are
passing through the fire of purification, only to gather,

and adding, “ Everybody is at liberty to view things
after thfir own fashiou, but I wish the country and the
-army to know that I am grateful for political and mili

•mand of Admiral Fensou, starts for the Pacific in the
beginning of April. It is to consist of three frigates,

Jibe. — Last evening about five o’c’ock
a fire occurred at No. 36 South Secoud street, in a five
storied brick building owned by the Rev. Howard Mai*
colm, and occupied on the flrst floor by the North Ame
rican Carbon Oil Company. The second, third, and
fourth stories were vacant, and the fifth was used as a
factory of India rubber blankets. 5* Tho fire originated on
the first floor, back, on Strawberry street, and running
up to tho roof destroyed all tho interior of the building.
Considerable consternation was caused in the neighbor
hood by tlio idea prevailing that the building contained
benzine, and that an explosion would take place. The
company lmte a largo vrarehome in J-iyno straot, Jind
keep but a small ijuantlty of oil in Second street. About
15 barrels of oil in the cellar were rolled out aud sayod.
The company had on hand a largo stock of lamps, &c.,
valued at $10,000; insured in the Royal, American, and
Pennsylvania Companies. No. 80, on the north, occu
pied as a store aud dwelling by Wm. Murthn, was con
siderably damaged by water. No. '4O, the dry goods
store and dwelling of S. V. It. Hunter, was flooded from
top to bottom, and tho contents much injured. Brooks'
well-known confectionery store and eating-house waj
eligibly damaged.
On Strawberry Htreet, the hotel of John M* Crofioor
and the office of Hr. Buttle Paul were both damaged by
water. No. 31, occupied on tho first floor by W. Over
field. agent for the Lehigh Slate Company, anil iu t!u<
upper part by Wb. Grosholz, A Company, importers of
French and German dry goods, was much injured by
water. The last-named firm are insured in tho Royal
and other companies.
Mr. G» W. Wooten, tha &get.t of the oil company, says
that the fire commenced in this maimer: lie, iu company
with a boy, was engaged in testing the illuminating pro
perties of different oils, and for that purpose had small
quantities burning in saucers of water. By some means
tho contents of a saucer fell on to a lot of packing* hay,
and iu an instant the whole place waa in n blaze.
The stationary engine of Dr, David Jayne VNW put into
service, under the direction of the members of tho South
wark Ilose Company, The tiro burned, stubbornly for
aleut two hours.

FIRE-ALARM TELEGRAPH.—YesterIay afternoon,
The Democratic members of City Councils hold a caucus
for the purpose of Dominating a superintendent of tho
rolice and Fire-Alarm Telegraph. Wra. J. Phillips,
Eml., the present incumbent, was unanimously nomi
nated for the positioi —there being only tliree votes
polled against him. The local telegraph was built for the
city by Blr. Phillips in 1856, anil he was then elected su
perintendent* Alld hflfl btf-n te-elecM by the different
Councils, both People and Democrats, ever since. The
election has always been made regardless of politics,
competency being the main point considered, and we are
glad to see the present ruling party in Councils following
the example of their predecessors. There was one or
two candidates in opposition to Mr. Phillips, neither of
whom Mas thought capable of assuming the duties of
this Llghly important position.
Descent on Disorderly Houses.—
Last evening a large body of police under the command of
Lieut. Hampton, made a descent on two cribs In Spafford
street, called respectively the *■ Continental” and
“ Smoke House.” The inmates, some fifty in number,
were locked up at the Central 9tAtteH, and will have a
hearingto-day. They are a wrotched lot of squalid hu
manity, and would be fit tenants for a workhouse, if we
had one In our city.
Post Office Robbery. —On Tues
day evening the post office at West Chester was broken
open and robbed of some four huudred letters. It is be
lieved that the greater part of these letters were from
soldiers, and contained money.
The Kentucky* Legislature has passed a
bill sbUDgillg the license Oh billiard tables, which
has heretofore been so high as to be almost prohibi
tory. This bill reduces the license from Sl5O to
$5O for the first and $25 for each additional table
in a saloon.
Hon. William B. Kimtv, ol Springfield,
Illinois, died suddenly, at his residence in that city,
last Wednesday evening. He was an officer in tho
Mexican war, and a prominent man in Illinois
politics.
Never has better ice been produced in
Maine than that which is now being got from the
ponds. It is nearly two feet thick, compact, heavy
and blue with the concentrated frost of January
nights.
A Chicago paper denies a current report
to the effect that one of its reporters whs killed out
right, and another had his leg shot off, at the cap
ture of Fort Henry, while a third esoaped un
harmed.
The Toronto Leader says the Federal troops
came very near being beaten as badly gt Fort Do
nelson as they were at Bull Run, and tells the Con
federatts not to be discouraged.

the commission-houses for first-class securities, aud

Government stocks are steady, and the sixes of 1881
exbibit considerable firmness iu the face of the realiza

directors are playing with the stock, and have sold largely

to buy within a few days, Tha euliaaced prico of money
has no doubt checked the advance somewhat. Some
kinds, which have not risen much, are in good demand.

Resolved, That, in accordance with the- resolutions
paeeed at the Public Meeting at which we were appointed,

Carolina, now within the military lines of Geo. SHE 11-
MAN, and at other places in the paths of our armies,
have upon the sympathies and the charity of benevolent
people, and that we shall exert ourselves as we may be
enabled to contribute to the-relief of their present press
ing wants, by supph ing them with food and raiment,
and by tending suitable persons to assist ii> their pro
per tuition in the arts of social life, and in tbeir proper
religious instruction, regard being had to their special
necessities and peculiar circumstances.
