A Returned Union Minister. —lf the
outbreak of the war caused a stampede among
clergymen in our Northern churches who had Secession
proclivities, the effect of our victories has been no loss to
difeutUrnl and return to the loyal States not a few faith
ful divineeof Union sent! meats, who have been compelled,
against their will, to submit to the tyranny of Southern
oligarchs until time And Uncle Sam should sot them
free. Of this class we havo an interesting case in th
Bev. K. J, Wilson, lately returned to this city from
Beaufort, South Caroline, where he officiated as
pastor of one of the largest churches in tbe
Stale, bis congregation numbering nearly five thousand
members, of whom about one-third were white—the
game Church, by the way, which was formerly occupied
by the Rev* Dr. Fuller, of Baltimore, of If. M. w. A.
Committee memory, the charge having been mainly ac
cepted by Mr. Wilson, through Dr. Fuller’s influence.
Mr. Wilson is a Scotchman by birth, but a thorough
American in sentiment, and as might be inferred from
his nationality, in the question now bring decided by the
sword, ig ft Unionist to tbe cjre. His situation, there
fore, for mor.tbnjprevious to his release, unyielding a 3
be was in bis political sentiments, was anything
else than a bed of roses, and that he has escaped
with his life, is alone due, doubtless, to the sanctity
of his office and tbe providence of God. Be made two
uiisuccefcetul attempts to escape; witnessed the bombard
in&Mtcf Bt-auforl frouiUret to last, and had the temority,
at its comu-encement, to prophecy to the fire-eaters on
the island what wouli be its result! The day after the
bombardment, Mr. Wilson found his way under the stars
and slripeB, and, at a sacrifice of position, salary, furni
ture, and library, and all other valuables that belonged,
to him, made his way to tho North without delay. In a
Conversation with him yesterday much that would iute*
rest the general reader was elicited, but asit is probable
that he will soon tell his own story to the public in his
own way, we will not anticipate. Since his arrival here
he has been warmly greeted by several of his ministerial
Baptist brethren, preached in some of their pulpits.
Hu is a preacher of fine culture, and more than ordinary
ability.
New Cartes de Visite.— The popularity
of the card photograph, or, as the French have it, carte
cfc •pisiYci its strikingly demonatratad at the g&lteyp of Mr,
Gutekunst. 706 Arch ttreit. The unparalleled succc&sof
Hr. G. in the photographic art is thronging his rooms
villi patrons, aud has made his pictures famous all over
the laud, and we believe he has taken more pic
tures of distinguished persons in this way than
any other pbotAJsrapher in th 6 country. NW ad
ditions from this boutco are boing made daily.
Among bis latest “card” pictures, we noticed excellent
likenesses of Hon. Horace Binuey, of this city, Mon.
Wm. Wilkins, of Western Pennsylvania, and Lucretia
Mott.
Smoked and Dkied I'isii,—-Wc have to in.
form our readers this morning that Mr. C. H. Mattson,
dealer in tine groceries, Tenth and Arch streets, has
now on hand a very choice variety of fish peculiarly
adapted for tho Besson —elegant smoked and spiced Sal
mon, line Quality Sardines, superior Mess Mackerel, aui,
iu short, seasonable fish of all kinds. Our readers should
beaT this in mind.
*VYe call attention to the advertisement
of Mr. W'oolmau, in another column, of his Oyster House,
where hotels and families can procure oysters of the best
Quality, at reasonable rates, and have tkam delivered at
thvir doom, without list* An establishment of this kind
Las long been needed inthiscUy. A good oyster is a
great delicacy. Mr. Woidman Is constantly purchasing,
aud is more likely to procure good oysters than those who
only use a fe%v. Dealers in the country can have them
canned, spiced, cr pickled, or ho will supply them in the
shell.

George Christy 3 s Minstrels at Concert

the programme is of a most excellent character, as also
the comicalities of Georgo Christy, O. Neill, and Japanese

of George Oluisty’g company. We learn that to-night

“The Last Dollar and the Last'Man”—
The rebels still talk about spending the last dollar in the
ConleJerate cause, and of having the last man die in the
last ditch. Judging from ihe celerity with which the
Svceehee” leave when threatened with danger, each in
dividual rebel seems UUpoeed to take care of himself for
the sake of being the last man. We opiue that when the
war conies to an end there will be a good many last mon
left, and that sonic of them will bo glad to scrape together
their last dollars, and invest them in such elegant and

In refeieoce to the freight accumulations of this road

ING, 3d instant, about ten o’clock, Mrs. PAL
MER* a highly-respected and intelligent colored lady* re
siding in the uppor part of this city* wan ejected from the
cars, in the midst of a severe storm of wind aud rain that
was sweeping over otir city at that hour.
Returning from her dutios as the Secretary of a bene
volent society, and being a woman of foeble health,
sought shelter in the cars on Spruce street, near Tenth*
to avoid the violence of the storm, and was thrust out
with the utmost rudeness.
Her conditloth when bke reached her residence* wm
certainly such as to seriously disturb her friends. Mrs.
Palmer is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and
a taxpayer in this city, and a person that understands so
well the proprieties of life, that there could be no just
cause of complaint against her whatever. Wbo, I ask,
is benefited bj this rudeness on the part of the conduc
tors of the city cars ?—for this is by no means an isolated
case.
